therapist: so, how have you been coping with your anxiety lately?
Me, nervously: Well… I’ve been trying to treat myself like a nervous cat…
therapist, stifling a goodnatured laugh: Oh? can you explain that to me?
Me: Well… if you have a nervous cat, the first thing you do is make sure their environment is safe and remove stressors… and you make sure they have enough food and water and places to hide… and you provide some enrichment in case they need to work out energy…
Therapist: And how are you applying that to yourself?
Me: Um. If I feel anxious, I’ll see if I need to back out of any sites or conversations, enforce my boundaries… check my environment for flashing lights or painful noises… make sure I’m hydrated and have eaten… and work on a hobby
Therapist: those are all excellent things! You’re a nervous cat and you need care and kindness!

hey with tr*mp abruptly announcing that they’re ending the census count on september 30, much earlier than originally planned (source, dated August 4, 2020), it’s vitally important that you get your census response in immediately.  the census is used to determine how many seats your state gets in the house of representatives and also helps allocate federal funding for schools, roads, hospitals, and fire departments (source 1) (source 2).
it’s just a brief questionnaire, but it’s one of the most important things you can do to help your community right now. hundreds of millions of dollars are on the line, and some states are already poised to lose multiple seats in the house because of low response rates (source). it only takes a couple minutes, so please, consider taking a break and filling it out now!

Shout out to all the people who are still social distancing and wearing masks. Thank you for still taking this pandemic seriously and understanding how an illness can spread from person to person. I pray that the universe provides you with an infinite amount of abundance.

Tbh it is kinda funny how so many Americans are convinced that every house over like 10 years old has a ghost.
"This house is ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD. People have DIED in here" like ok and...?

In my linguistics class we had a Chinese girl who had adopted a European name. We all didn't speak Cantonese and understood her wish to not have her name butchered all the time, except for one of us, a guy who thought he knew to differentiate between tones perfectly because he was learning Vietnamese. He saw himself as super woke and he thought it was wrong for her to adopt a European name when we should just try harder to pronounce her Chinese name (which honestly is just really difficult if you don't speak the language at all, even for linguists). So he would constantly call her by her Chinese name which she initially didn't even want to share, but he kept asking her for it, and from the look on her face I could tell that he did not get it right, and that she didn't like it at all. The first time he did it she even told him it wasn't correct, but he kept going, so sure he knew how to pronounce it. So like I 100% agree that we should put in effort to pronounce names from foreign languages and not give up on the first try if we get it wrong, but we should also respect people's wishes when they know we can't do it/they know it takes too much effort for them to teach us how to pronounce it. In that case, we should just use the name we're being told to use. It's that simple.

I keep saying that the reason why I, as an Irish person, keep reblogging American political content is because your internal politics affects not just America, but the entire world.
And I want to give you an example of that.
Over in the UK, Boris Johnson has announced his intention to renege on key points of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement that his government signed with the EU.
Part of this Withdrawal Agreement is ensuring that a "hard border", that is a walled and manned border with checkpoints, isn't erected between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
The lack of a hard border is a key part of the 1997 Good Friday Agreement, a peace treaty that ended several decades of civil war in Northern Ireland.
The reason why Johnson is breaking this agreement with the EU is because he wants a trade deal with the US, a trade deal that Trump has stated he will not give to Johnson unless he removes some product safety laws.
These product safety laws are also enshrined in the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, because the EU doesn't want sub-standard products entering the EU marketplace, and the only way to avoid checks on goods for these safety standards at the Ireland/Northern Ireland border is to have the UK to continue to uphold these standards.
But Johnson so badly wants this deal with the US, in order to "prove" the UK isn't dependent on EU Trade, that he's willing to break two legally-binding international treaties.
To compound this, both Democrats and Republicans have repeatedly stated that if Johnson breaches the Good Friday Agreement, he will not get a trade deal with the US.
Because Irish Americans make up 10% of the US population, and that is a group both sides want to appeal to. And Irish Americans generally like the idea of peace on the island of Ireland.
But Johnson knows that Donald Trump is willing to go against his party, and that the Republicans will fall in line with Trump's wishes. He knows the Republicans' threat of "no trade deal if you violate the Good Friday Agreement" is a shockingly empty one.
He knows that so long as Trump is in power, he can get what he wants, even if he breaks international law in doing so.
And this is just one of many examples of how US internal politics heavily affects the internal and international politics of other nations. Like it or not, the effects of your vote go well beyond your borders.
Donald Trump is not just bad for your country, he is bad for the entire human race.
Please. Get him out.
