cutaway drawing of the interior of the flying saucer, Based on Adamski's 1954 description of a Venusian scout ship
Ive given it some halftoning, because nostalgia
3d model of Adamski's Ufo! (and a classically out of focus render ^^) I really like this style of flying saucer. its very 1950s, and kinda cute.

This is the 'hoax' version, about 10 inches across, and very close to the camera. I may make a 'real' version later, with more details based on the sketches of the interior published at the time. I wanted to match the original photos and I discovered pretty quickly that I couldn't do that, unless it was sized as a model.

It is an interesting experience to work on two related series in parallel - traditional geometric drawings on paper versus digital images created with JavaScript code based on threejs. Both feature an ellipsoid intersecting a sphere, related to the physics of the gyroscpe:
Currently working on the latter: I am moving my virtual camera manually to find an interesting viewpoint (Shown in the animated gif). The actual artworks - to be printed - will be high-resolution still images. I am still playing with all the parameters: The shape of the ellipsoid, the colors, the density of points and randomization of colors.
BTW, first ever gif I created :-)

playing with brushes in clip studio paint!

trying to learn the more advanced features in the brush system, and also make a more realastic feeling airbrush brush. these arnt really successes on the second goal, but they are interesting effect brushes.
(actually they are okay recreations of a spray can, or single action paint sprayer, but an airbrush has a manual paint flow control which I am struggling to simulate)
these effects were produced by reversing some of the pressure curves. something I noticed about the air brush, as the stroke gets larger the amount of paint is reduced, making it lighter. the opposite of a marker or brush.
(the other thing I don't like about the stock airbrush brush is it's lack of texture, a real airbrush has a very subtle, but pervasive texture, almost like dithering, or microscopic pointillism. this helps blend the colors when using opaque paint, and prevents digital banding when scanned or photographed. for a digital recreation the banding particularly is a big problem)

So, turns out Esher's reflecting ball pieces are pretty close to a 'MatCap', and if cropped can be used as a reflection map in blender
'MatCap' is short for material capture, and is an older way to handle reflections in 3d rendering. It's not as realistic, but because it doesn't require ray-tracing is much faster to render
If you want the MatCap, I added it below

this mermaids size is matched only by her curiosity
alternative caption/title; a sailor's second encounter with the great pacific mermaid
this is 7 passes in blender, combined with lots of paintover and hand editing in csp. I couldnt really decided on a look for the ocean surface and ended up doing lots of editing, then I realized that the mermaid was hard to see and painted in highlights/shadows to separate her from the background, and repainted many details while I was doing that
I tried one of my new hair tools for this; each color is a single hair object, making between 20 and 50 strands/locks for one control curve. I liked it, but still ended up repainting most of it

Hubcap UFO!!
I wanted this design to be a period appropriate retro hoax. so it's assembled from two 60s chevy hub caps! the lower cap rotates on a shaft made from a bicycle wheel-bearing and axle, powered by a model aircraft motor.

while waiting for airbrush parts, I made it in blender. ((No photos were used making this))
Bonus points for anyone who can tell what brand of paint is in this piece ^^
