“It is,” she agreed, though she was really watching him more than the sky around them or the city below them. It was easier to focus on him - the curve of his smile, the focus in his eyes, the way his hands were firm and steady but relaxed as he directed them. His was the first face she’d seen in nineteen months long ago, and she still felt like she had to memorize every inch of it even now. “I don’t think I’ll ever feel quite that calm up here,” she admitted, keeping her hand on his wrist while she looked below them again, “but it is nice. What do you think about up here?”
Whether the flutter in her stomach was nerves or Caleb’s hands gently helping her get settled in, she wasn’t about to dwell either way. After everything happened - after losing her mind, her friends, her future - Caleb had helped her put a life back together. She’d do anything for him, and that meant not fucking this up in any capacity. “I trust you,” she promised him, giving him one last thumbs up before they took off. Her stomach dropped and her hands clenched the seat under her as she felt the initial rush of terror wash over her, but as they moved over the city she took a deep breath, steadying herself and allowing just one finger to touch his arm, to give her some sort of security. “It is beautiful,” she admitted, chewing on her lower lip as she looked around them. Sometimes she missed the stars of the night sky, but this was a far more luxurious beauty she was glad to appreciate. “I can see why you like it up here so much.”

“That’s hot,” Maya admits, her eyes widening in surprise. She never paid much attention to professional sports, but she liked a man with strength, with a story, and Weston was definitely piquing her interest. “And a bummer. But you work at the ranch now, right? Surely you can still pick up, say, 120 pounds and toss it around easily, though,” she grinned at him. “But home was your only option? Don’t most guys go on to be like, coaches or trainers or commentators or something? Or was the big city life just not for you after all?”
Maya licked her lips, debating just what to tell him. She was cultivating a new life here, a new existence. Still, she could give him sprinkles of truth. “I moved here from Boston,” she started, finger tracing the rim of her glass, “I was doing publicity there. I hit a rough spot and decided I needed a new start. Somewhere no one knew who I was.” She takes a sip, nodding in his direction. “Floyd told me you left and came back. What’s your story?”

“I think about this,” she admits, her body keening into him, her hands resting on his chest. “About how good you feel under me, how much I miss the taste of you.” She doesn’t kiss him yet - she’s missed him too much for that. If she can have tonight, she’s going to take her time, dipping her head down to lick a line up his throat, a soft hum escaping her. “I think about how no one has ever known me better than you,” she continues, voice husky near his earlobe, her teeth tugging lightly at his skin. “Sometimes, when I’m with someone else, I picture you instead,” she admits, “your hands and your body against mine, your tongue buried between my thighs. Sometimes it’s the only way I can get off.”
“She’s not good enough for you,” Hazel murmured, teeth catching on his ear lobe before she pulls back - just enough, just a little, her fingers twisting with the buttons on her own shirt, letting them fall open one at a time. “Do you miss me?” The words were more sincere than she meant them to be, more vulnerable than she usually allowed herself. “I miss you all the time,” she admitted, blouse falling off her shoulder as she did. “I think about you all the time.”

“Just because I stayed with Leo doesn’t mean I thought what happened was a mistake.” That had never even been in her thoughts - the mistake, really, was walking away after, letting Avery go. Letting her think for one moment Zelda hadn’t been thinking of her constantly.
“I don’t know what I’m doing,” she admits, something she could only say to Avery, something she hopes - however minutely - Avery can understand. “I love you. I love him. What am I supposed to do? If I leave him for you, I’ll miss him. With you gone, I miss you. It’s not like I’m winning here, A.”
“Leo knows someone here,” she admitted, her fingers tightening around the glass in her hand as she debates internally just how honest she should be. “And I knew you’d be here,” she finally relents, chewing down on her lip as she avoids eye contact.
The truth was, she missed Avery so fucking much. Leo was her dream man, but Avery - Avery was her other half, knew her better than anyone ever had and still loved her. “It’s been a little difficult to contact you,” she smirked. “I made a fake instagram to see what you’ve been up to, but I didn’t want to talk to you until we were face to face again. Can we please talk about what happened?”

She hadn’t seen Avery in months; staying with Leo hadn’t been the choice Avery had been expecting after their night together, but Zelda had made a commitment to him. Her feelings for Avery were complicated, and she couldn’t deny the way her heart skipped in her chest as their eyes caught across the room.
“Funny seeing you here,” she greeted, trying for neutral - the nicest she could manage, really. Her voice dropped an octave, hand reaching out for Avery’s wrist - “I’ve missed you.”

Hazel climbed right into his lap, no hesitation as she leaned into his ear, voice low and sultry. “Do you like her better than me?” She asked, hand resting on his chest. They’d broken up almost a year ago now, but she could feel his heart under her palm, beating erratically for her anyways, the liquor from the party surging through her veins. “Is she better than me?”

“If you think they look good now, you should see them out of the dress,” she winked, downing her own shot just as easily. She was exactly aware of how attractive she was, and if Weston didn’t want to play coy, why should she? While Floyd probably needed to be coddled and seduced slowly with love and romance, she could probably grab Weston by the belt loops and fuck him right there in the bathroom if she wanted. “We could always toast to our mutual attractiveness,” she suggested, a devilish smile on her face as she let her foot graze against his calf, her dress riding up slightly as she did. “We are clearly the sexiest people in this room, no competition.”

Flying frightened her for obvious reasons, but she trusted Caleb with her life - literally. And going over the city did seem safer than over the Canadian wilderness - if they went down, she trusted Caleb would land them safe. “Okay,” she agreed, holding her hand out for him to take, letting him lead the way. “You only live once, right?”

“I’ve never been one for bourbon but when in Rome,” she smirked, leaning over the bar enough to let both Weston and the bartender see just a glimpse down her dress, a tease without giving too much away. She ordered a shot for herself and a vodka soda just in case, turning her full attention to Weston once her alcohol was procured. “So you make bourbon and hang out in bars,” she noted, sliding onto a stool and making herself comfortable. “What else do you do? I’m still new to country boys; are you all this handsome, or is that just a Bartlett thing?”

“I’ve never been very good at following orders,” she admits, laughing easily. “What the hell. What’s the worst that could happen - as long as you pinky swear this isn’t some like, scheme to kidnap me for a ransom, I’ll come.”

Maya smirked, walking away to return to Floyd. He was her original mark, after all, and she’d pegged him as an easy one, but Weston was somehow probably easier. Still, she wasn’t rude - she had manners - and she spent another two hours before showing up at the bar, strolling right up to where Weston was with another woman and sliding herself in between the two of them. “So if I was interested in a drink,” she asked, the other girl huffing behind her, something Maya ignored easily, “what’s the best option gonna be on this menu?”

Maya stiffled a giggle - she knew she was being rude at this point, keeping Floyd waiting, but she found herself just slightly more intrigued by the younger Bartlett. She held her hand out, wiggling her fingers so he would hand her his phone, placing her own number inside. “Balls in your court now, cowboy,” she teased lightly, standing close enough to slide the phone back into his front pocket, her nails catching lightly on the denim of his thigh as she smirked up at him. “Show me a better time than the hardware store and maybe I’ll take you up on it.”
