Sneak peek? 😏 README.txt draft for an archive I've started to make...
** ON THE PROJECT **
This project aims to support research, education, and archival preservation of historically significant documents related to the Chornobyl disaster.
The collection only includes materials that meet at least one of the following criteria: —— Primary source status —— Authorship by key individuals —— Rarity or limited public access —— Direct relevance to the Chornobyl disaster
The following types of content were intentionally excluded: —— Secondary or derivative works that do not provide original research, new analysis, or access to primary sources. —— Content only tangentially related to the Chornobyl disaster. —— Low-resolution scans or documents of poor legibility that significantly hinder readability or citation.
While “Chernobyl” remains the more familiar rendering in English, this project uses “Chornobyl” to recognize the city’s location in Ukraine and to emphasize the importance of using Ukrainian place names, especially in historical and cultural contexts.
If you notice any errors in the materials, have questions about the collection, or wish to suggest additions or corrections, please feel free to contact me at the address listed above.
** ON ORGANIZATION **
For this project, a book is defined as a formally published work, typically with an ISBN or publisher imprint. A document refers to unpublished or informally distributed materials such as internal reports, memos, transcripts, declassified files, and technical papers.
The archive is organized by material type, with top-level folders for documents, books, and videos. Within each of these, subfolders are grouped by language.
** ON FILE NAMES **
All file names are either in English or transliterated into the Latin alphabet to ensure compatibility with systems that may not support Cyrillic characters. The transliteration system used is documented in transliteration.txt.
File names follow this format: LastName_Title_Year. When there are multiple documents by authors sharing the same last name, the author's first initial is added after the last name (e.g., LastName-FirstInitial_Title_Year) to distinguish them.
** ON ACRONYMS.TXT **
This file lists acronyms found in the materials contained in these folders, along with their expanded forms.
Entries are grouped by language, and retain the formatting and spelling used in source documents.
When multiple acronyms appear on a single line, they refer to the same entity or concept, and are typically alternate forms used across languages, institutions, or time periods.
Acronyms in parentheses (e.g., "(R)CPS") reflect cases where the parent term (here, "Reactor") may or may not appear in usage, depending on the document.
** ON DOCULIST.TXT **
This file lists documents included in the project, including their title, author(s), and publication date.
Entries are grouped by language, and retain the formatting and spelling used in source documents.
In some cases, authorship or date may be unknown and are marked as “???” and “xxxx” respectively.
If the date or author is uncertain or only a best guess, it will be followed by a question mark (?).
** ON LEGALITY **
This project and its archive is provided strictly for educational and scholarly use under fair use principles. I do not claim ownership of any included materials; all rights remain with the original authors and publishers.
I've located, collected, organized, and curated this material to make it more accessible to others studying the Chornobyl disaster. No commercial use is permitted, and redistribution of any content for profit is strictly discouraged.
If you are a copyright holder and would like any material removed or revised, please contact me at the address listed above.
Thoughts? :-) - Rodka
AMAZING!!
Absolutely amazing, big, big fan of the way you go about selecting the works and the inclusion of the date in the file name and an even bigger fan of the list of acronyms! You're doing such an amazing job with this, I'm beyond impressed, truly!! There's literally no way this could be any better... it's perfect...

Idgaf if you don't want to write essays for school. I don't care if you don't want to write corporate emails yourself. I don't care if you can't draw well, I don't care if you can't write well, I don't care if you just really really want to talk to your favorite fictional character but don't want to RP with a real person because you have social anxiety or whatever
If you're still regularly using generative ai, chatgpt or midjourney or character.ai or literally whatever the fuck, im personally blaming you when my utility prices start going up.

The radiation levels remain unchanged, and everyone was very quick to react, so at least there's that...

Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant sarcophagus after russia hit it with a drone. Yes, you've read it correctly. russia targeted sarcophagus that covers the nuclear reactor №4 in the building of the Chornobyl NPP.

'People are panicking about AI tools the same way they did when the calculator was invented, stop worrying' cannot stress enough the calculator did not forcibly pervade every aspect of our lives, has such a low error rate it's a statistical anomaly when it does happen, isn't built on mass plagiarism, and does not obliterate the fucking environment when you use it. Be so fucking serious right now

I hope you missed the feeling of a full, Chornobyl-themed inbox. You'll have to get used to it! Do you know any good documentaries, interviews, videos, etc. about Chornobyl? Whether direct links (YT or otherwise), or just the titles, it'd be a big help for me. - R
If something is not linked right or there's any other problem, please let me know! Drafting text posts on mobile is an absolute nightmare. They still haven't fixed the bug that randomly deactivates hyperlinks and messes with whole paragraphs of text... delightful.
Let's see what I have saved... @deadvitya you asked for "good" stuff - now, I'm not sure if I'd clarify all of these as good, but at least most of them aren't the silly and very dramatised "documentaries."

These places are dear to me
Unforgettable
Threshold
The Bell of Chernobyl
Pripyat Chernobyl Year 1996
Pripyat archival footage from 1986 till 1990
About Vashchuk (one/two/three/parts of these available here with translation)
Розщеплені на атоми
Lyudmila Ignatenko about HBO's show | Vasily's mother and Svetlana Aleksevich (ugh)
Літературно-експертні вечори "Ті, хто не залишив варту" (part 1/part 2)
The Chernobyl Labyrinth: The Search for Khodemchuk with Aleksandr Agulov
Aleksandr Kupnyi has a lot of interviews; some of his videos are even translated
Поход в шахту реактора a.k.a archival footage from 1998 posted by Kupnyi that deserves its very own mention
The Chornobyl Family YouTube channel
That Chernobyl Guy (obviously)
Чернобыльская атомная
Interview with Valery Perevozchenko's wife
Compiled bits of (incredibly depressing) interviews with Vera Toptunova (Leonid Toptunov's mother)
Interview with Oleksiy Breus
Boris Stolyarchuk interview

Колокол Чернобыля
Maximum Allowable Dose (a documentary with the focus on Legasov)
The Telecon documentary channel has a TON of archival footage from the liquidation efforts (including this one in which they're bothering Steinberg as he's having lunch lmao)
The hour long interview with Dyatlov
A much shorter interview with Dyatlov

Pre disaster Bryukhanov interview
A short 1996 Bryukhanov interview
Fomin appearance from a TV programme
Firefighters interview
Chernobyl: Utopia in Flames (I dont have a nice streaming link, but I do have this)
Chernobyl: Two Colors of Time (it's a trilogy, but I can't find the first part as of right now. Here are the second and the third)
Phone conversations from the night of the disaster (acted out, not the actual recording, of course)
A few things (not videos) I have miraculously saved and not lost and forgotten about immediately after reading:
Interview with Sitnikov's widow
Interview with Aleksandr Akimov's childhood friend
Chernobyl Critical Blog
Inexplicably gone (since last year, I think) but archived on the Wayback Machine, Francesca Dani's Heroes of Chernobyl articles. It included an interview with Leonid Toptunov's mother.
Note: I deliberately did not add documentaries such as "Hour by Hour", the BBC one, "The Final Warning" (yes, like the book) etc etc, because they're easy to find and also... you know... not that good. Honourable mention: the "Zero Hour" documentary, which did a great job casting the control room staff (and nothing else). I'm sure that I'm forgetting a ton of things, but I'd say it's a solid starting point.

Rodka here. Deleted my old account. Here's my new one. And /here/, is something much more interesting than all of that... This is my (admittedly slow) progress on my (hard/Google) drive project. I've been quite rigorous about it. Even scrapped together some code to speed up PDF making... lots of URL prediction and automated file downloading. Anyway, it's good, no? If anything particularly strikes your fancy, let me know; I'll send it over. In the meantime, I'm still organizing away... - R
HELL YEAH, THAT'S SO COOL!! Great job! How's the progress now? =D
Meanwhile, I haven't added a single thing to my Google Drive in a million years... shame on me for abandoning my You Wouldn't Download a Car style project...! That said, I just haven't seen anything to add to it in a while... :(
