Wearable Story: Woolwich Pennsylvania Tuxedo
Woolrich is an outdoor clothing company known for its timeless wool coats and blankets (Woolrich has made blankets during the Civil War and both World Wars!). The company was founded back in 1830 by John Rich who immigrated to Plum Run, Pennsylvania from England. It all started with John starting a wool mill and selling his wares out of a mule cart to different tradesmen in need of durable, warm wool products. During the Civil War, Woolrich made wool blankets for Union soldiers. By the late 1800s, Woolrich expanded to the leisure market. As more people were able to enjoy the outdoors, the market for wool products opened up as well. As more and more people could afford to spend time outside and vacation, the more people who needed warm clothes. In 1925, Woolwich introduced its Classic Hunt Coat. The black-on-red Heritage Plaid coat came with wool pants to match. The bright red material was chosen to appeal to hunters. The matching set became known as the Pennsylvania Tuxedo, becoming a staple in outdoorsmen’s closets. By the late 1980’s, Woolwich became an international brand. Today, the Pennsylvania Tuxedo is considered a historic and iconic item in American fashion.

My dad purchased his Classic Hunt Coat in the late 1970’s. He bought it to wear during his trips to Alaska - for nearly 15 years, he’d spend 6 months out of the year salmon fishing, crabbing, and hunting all throughout the Alaskan wilderness. The coat lasted him through all of his trips. We live in Florida now, and when it was time for me to move up north, he passed his Classic Hunt Coat in black-on-red Heritage Plaid on to me. The coat is now almost forty years old yet looks like I just bought it. It’s extremely durable, warm, and super cool.

Challenge 7: SponsorMe
SponsorMe is a data-driven platform and consulting business that helps public figures monetize their popularity. Each public figure -- an athlete or celebrity -- has a strong fanbase; however, they have little insight into the demographic makeup of their following. SponsorMe aims to both analytically classify the public figure’s fanbase, revealing insightful and granular information about their fans, and recommend endorsements that will foster engagements with a broader audience and compensate the celebrity.
The SponsorMe platform is a web application that uses proprietary data on brand associations (challenge six survey) to characterize a public figure’s following and recommend new brand endorsements. During the registration process, the user will specify the type of celebrity they are such as actor, athlete, reality star, or broadcaster. Then the user is prompted to enter the businesses that he/she currently represents so our backend classification algorithms can accurately describe the specific demographics of the user’s following. Having processed both the current endorsements and the user-specific inputs, SponsorMe will begin to display the predicted fanbase description.
First, we present the user with the geographic breakdown of their audience. Specifically, SponsorMe’s web application will output a spatial heat map of the United States of America to intuitively show the regions where the user is particularly popular and the locations where the user can perhaps improve his/her following. However, geographic data is not the only way of stratifying the celebrity’s following. SponsorMe also graphically displays information regarding gender, age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic breakdown of the user’s fanbase. The user’s fanbase demographics are shown alongside those of comparable public figures. This is so that the user can see areas they have not yet capitalized on as well as areas they are doing particularly well in. This functionality uniquely characterizes a public figure’s fans but it also reveals the lacunae in the user’s supporters. This gap is central to SponsorMe’s mission as identifying it shows the user which demographics they have not yet connected with. Next, we present the user with specific corporate endorsement recommendations to access a more diverse fan base. This list will have been vetted so that the companies listed are looking for brand ambassadors that match the characteristics of the user. In addition, the current brand ambassadors for the companies are shown. We then allow the user if he/she is interested to connect with the corporations through our online communication tools.
In this way, SponsorMe provides both a cutting edge data analytics recommendation system and a comprehensive communications tool for both potential brand ambassadors and corporations.
