Radio 1’s Big Weekend Royal Blood thing… I hope Mike’s okay? That was kinda out of character for him, wasn’t it?

Also I do blame the booking for this. Those kids had not come for Royal Blood. They came for I think Niall from One Direction. That is not Royal Blood’s audience. Yes, TikTok will make you believe that actually we’re post-genre post-everything, but when you actually go out live we do not see that. Rock bands don’t seem to work for pop crowds. Alternative bands don’t seem to work for Top-40s crowds. Gorillaz had a mute crowd at Coachella, we talked about this last month. Royal Blood didn’t have a crowd that was meant for them, Mike’s reaction was a bit dramatic because sometimes honestly it’s just a gig, it’s just a bad day, you do your best and you go. I don’t know, do they feel that by being a nationally televised gig it does them a disservice to be seen playing to a crowd that’s fairly muted? They didn’t seem too quiet to me though.

People saw them opening for Muse last weekend, and maybe people who went to the gig can fill me in on how the crowd took to them, but I suspect a crowd of Muse fans would’ve been far more receptive to their style of hard rock than One Direction fans? Of course I know there will be some people who like both (“9 people”), but Royal Blood are not a bad band in the least, they’re a really good live act. And to the people saying eh they’re nobodies with an ego, that is not true. They’re a chart-topping band. They had the world at their feet in 2014 and they built upon that very well. For those that like numbers (and for whatever reason, pop fans do), they have those #1 album awards. They have earned their stripes. I do find Mike’s reaction a bit strange, but I do understand his frustration. For how loosely defined the term “pop music” is, they can be stubbornly set in what they’re willing to tolerate musically. Maybe booking optimistically thought fans would like a bit of everything but I guess not. This was a stage waiting for Lewis Capaldi and Niall Horan. This was a stage screaming their heads off because Lewis covered Taylor Swift. Tough booking, primarily.

(For those not in the know, Mike Kerr got quite frustrated that the crowd was kinda muted during their Big Weekend set last weekend in Dundee and he asked them to kinda get excited, clap for drummer Ben, whatnot, and then remarked how no one in the crowd seemed to know them. After trying to hype them up a bit he got frustrated, flipped them off and walked off stage. Un-Mike Kerr-like tbh. He’s always been super reasonable in interviews n stuff before.)
