#1 The Kelpie

Started doodling on a trip to edinburgh, after passing the giant kelpie statues.

Always loved folklore, especially from my own culture. Scottish folklore is spooky, love it.

So, quick wee folklore lesson cause this shit is fascinating.

The Kelpie (Cailpeach in scottish gaelic) is a water spirit that was often believed to reside in lochs over Scotland. It is similar to that of the each uisge (water horse), but not the same.

Kelpies are often known as malicious spirits. Luring people onto their backs and then plunging into the water to drown their victims. Why you would want to ride a random horse wandering around is unknown to me but anyways. Although well known for its more deadly traits, the kelpies have also been documented as a rather helpful spirit. Those who have been lucky (or stupid) enough to either capture or gain the help of a kelpie have found them to be excellent work horses…although fiery in personality.

Pretty fuckn cool story. A tale to warn of the dangers of the natural world. The sea is dangerous, with or without a water spirit dragging you under the waves. The story of the kelpie is an old folktale warning of the dangers of water, of which many believed in the old days. It’s a superstitious place.

This was a fun tattoo design to make. Beautifully deadly~
