(again i doubt karlach was the first person gortash ever stabbed in the back, and i think she would have been privy to a lot of it as his bodyguard, but it seems like she didn't have an issue with him until that person was her)

anyways same hat for both of them u know

lately i have been thinking a lot abt karlach. she worked very closely with an arms dealer/ gang member and thought very highly of him right up until the moment he betrayed her personally. in an origin playthrough she can acknowledge that consuming soul coins as a power-up is probably evil (link) but if tav/ the dark urge tells her not to do so she'll disapprove and say they're damned anyway so why not.

honestly i don't think it's all that different from astarion, who was also forced to do a lot of "evil" under someone else's command and then when freed has the choice to continue down that path or break the cycle. u could even draw some parallels between the choice to complete the ritual, sending the spawns' souls to hell, and karlach's ability to use the coins (although the sheer # of souls involved obviously do make a big difference.) why was it wrong when zariel made her do it, but it doesn't matter so much now?

this is not a #hater post i think it adds really interesting nuance to her character. i wish the game acknowledged it more. or like, at all. maybe content cuts had a lot to do with it (particularly wrt the soul coins) but i want her to unpack this stuff!!!!! i think it's boring to reduce her to the categorically good puppydog character. it's more fun when she's a little bit of a hypocrite. you know.
