learning from my hamlet post that a lot of people don’t know that Marcellus, Bernardo, and Horatio see the king’s ghost before Hamlet does because the opening scene is being cut in a lot of current adaptations/performances?? that is cuckoo bananas because not only is it the inciting incident of the entire story but in a story where for 500 years one of the crucial questions asked of the audience is whether the lead character is sane, that scene it is absolutely crucial in establish Hamlet’s sanity at the beginning of the story!!!
Marcellus & Bernardo say “uh that’s ☝️ a ghost. let’s get someone smart to handle this situation.” so they get Horatio and Horatio says “uh that’s ☝️ my best friend’s dead dad. i’m looping him in.”
Hamlet doesn’t come up with the ghost on his own!! Regardless of arguments about the ghost’s instructions in its one on one with Hamlet and its later appearances, the ghost’s first appearance is fact!
I’m losing it that directors are cutting these sceeeenes what do you mean what do you mean!!!!
#hmm i have so little authority to comment on this#but like. hello???#i think the presence of the ghost is. one of the things that makes the show so interesting#like if u take out the first scene then the show is about a son consumed by grief who does bad stuff about it#and maybe blames it on his dad and his 'instructions'#but if you leave it in there's so many delicious questions to be answered !!!#or NOT answered which is maybe better for some of th em#anyways i've seen one production of hamlet and idk whether they left this scene i don't remember#but my summer camp did an 80's glam rock musical adaptation that was about as crazy as it sounds#and this scene was PIVOTAL#bc the whole thing was 'is hamlet going through a phase or is she (they genderbent hamlet) serious about this glam rock thing'#the dad's instructions were smth along the line of rock out so hard you show your uncle who's boss. btw.#it was a children's production so that does make sense but it's still SO funny#hamlet#shakespeare

imagine being watson's editor in the 19th century and having to beg him to write like a normal heterosexual person only for him to keep waxing poetic about holmes's long, sensitive fingers every five pages and writing shit like "his lips grazed my ear" and "i felt holmes's hand steal into mine" and "holmes's cold, thin fingers closed round my wrist". i would quit honestly
#born to be a fic writer forced to fight in the war 😔😔#<- prev prev ohhhh my god#crying laughing if i were him i would have quit by now#sherlock
