my uh, close internet friend broke up with his girlfriend over financial things but the more he describes it the more i think its insane he ever stayed. She wanted to be engaged before they even moved in with each other, no prenup, she's 60k in debt, he has like 100k in assets, she's a Divorce Laywer. Can you imagine getting rushed into marriage by a divorce lawyer. lmao.

If I ever meet Sam Reich I'm gonna pretend I'm just a chatty stranger that doesn't have a clue who he is. complain about the weather, mention how long the line is for this sandwich shop, bring up the fact that I far prefer the classic sandwich from my locale, the italian beef. See, the italian beef offers a combination of textures and flavors that make an incredibly simple sandwich absolutely delectable and arguably a top 5 sandwich in general. the sharp vegetal flavor of giardinera, the rich umami of au jus? divine. Some people order with hot and sweet peppers, but the sweet peppers just feel like it's too much for me. Anyway, we're here in philadelphia, so I've got to do as the romans do, at least try the philly cheese, understand what all the hype is about. I'd ask him what he thinks about the philly, see if he's ever had a chance to try it, compare it to other regional delicacies like the po'boy and the banh mi. See, the po'boy and the banh mi offer an interesting cultural question of how two french colonized locales created two related yet profoundly different sandwiches. Many an essay could be written about it, and I'm certain many have already been made. I'd ask him if he had a classic sandwich growing up, maybe the chopped cheese or the lobster roll, going off his vaguely northeastern, upperclass accent. He might even say he's got a fondness for the lobster roll, but really the experience is overrated given the overall cultural focus on the sandwich leads to rampant markups and an ultimately disappointing user experience. I'd ask him if he's from Boston. He'd shake his head no, it's just a universal experience growing up in new england. Naturally, this piques my interest, and I ask him the first question that comes to mind.
Sam, where are you from?

690 days of war and yet nothing shattered me more than seeing my school, the place where I spent 7 years of my life, turned into a military fortress. A place that once held my dreams and childhood now carries only fear and ruins.

probably not going to do a jump review today, but I will say taking an idol that your main character likes because she looks vaguely like his first crush and adding her to your cast as a teacher HAS to count as jumping the shark.

Like, what the hell is even that?
as is, the story had enough moving parts to sustain it for the forseeable future, and everyone knows that too many waifus does not a good story make. disregarding that, holy character overlap batman!
We've got a showbiz character already, a character that apparently looks like her (authors words, not mine,) even a bacgroundcharacter as the hot teacher. Like, this is the heroine of an entirely separate harem manga. again, this is NOT my genre, but good lord, what a fuckin choice.

I could write so much about the differences between Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus one as different sides of a political story.
Shin was a political satire at points about the ineffectiveness of Japanese Beauracracy in the face of immediate crisis and how a solution can only be found once the government is pared back to a leaner, more agile and less bound by red tape core of problem solvers. I talks about competence and creativity and radical ideas in the face of insurmountable odds once freed from constraint. The protagonists are young, scrappy and ambitious and the idea that you can make a difference, can step up and save everyone if only you were free to do so.
Minus One is about humans struggling to deal with a crisis in the face of a LACK of government, with almost no military after the trauma of a war they were forced into by their government and then lost badly. It's about picking up the pieces and then having those pieces kicked over again because of the actions of others and possibly, the inaction of one of the protagonists in the past. It's about regret and shame and heartbreak and the feeling you are not worthy of happiness so denying it when it presents itself to you.
And while Shin deals with the constraints placed on Japan by the treaty that ended World War II and whether or not they can deploy their self-defense forces to try and stop Godzilla before it is too late, Minus one deals with the lack of support from the US Occupying Forces who seem to not care if Japan gets absolutely destroyed again. You can almost feel a kind of callous disdain in the non-presence of the Americans as if they are ok with Japan being destroyed as long as it doesn't lead to conflict with the USSR. Or maybe they are just using that as an excuse to further humiliate a defeated enemy that once threatened them.

Is there a specific name for the logical fallacy that's just listing traits and arguments ad nauseum to make them all seem reasonable or unreasonable?
like "people have a lot of disdain for emergency medical staff, homeless shelter workers, (positive role x,) (positive role y,) (positive role z,) guys who just go around kicking orphans, people who donate to charity, librarians, and sanitation workers. I think that's particularly bad."
it's a pretty powerful fallacy because if you try to argue that the guy that kicks orphans isn't a good guy, it implicitly makes you seem like you've missed the importance of the guy that kicks orphans rather than showing that one of these things is not like the other.

really valuable little piece from a 17 year old poet and writer in gaza about the reality and indignity of relying on foreign aid solicited online. this has been the reality for gazans since the beginning of the genocide when a lot of people lost their jobs. while a lot of discourse around online fundraising understandably centers the necessity of this aid (or, less sympathetically, the feelings of westerners who object to the knowledge of our position of power that gazan fundraisers reveal) i really think the perspectives of the palestinians who do the e-begging has been lost.
notice how his post never once suggests you should /stop/ aiding gazans through donations or even deprioritize it. what he is asking is explicitly solidarity, not charity. while it cannot undo the hierarchy inherent to the practice, radical charity is a thing and i think we owe it to people like yazan that we do not see gazans as a helpless population (or a horde invading our attention) but people in their own right using the tools available for them, as we use the tools available to us to help keep them alive.
this post was taken from @abolishtheusa on instagram, and yazan's instagram is @yazan._.mohammd. here is his chuffed fundraiser.
here is the linktree for the sameer project, a which also relies on donations and is running seriously low on funds
here is the website for workshops 4 gaza, which sells radical books and tickets to exclusive workshops in exchange for donations to the sameer project and other fundraisers

To put it bluntly, the only way to end homelessness is to house people or kill them.
That's it. Those are your options. Homelessness doesn't go away based on "crime crackdowns." You will imprison the unhoused, and when they are free, they will be unhoused again. Or they will die in prison.
When you burn encampments or force people out without their stuff, they remain unhoused or freeze to death.
After working with the unhoused, it's become abundantly clear that those who don't want to support them instead want them dead.
There is blood on the hands of every government and organization that controls the homeless population with force instead of compassion.
