The first, not the last... 😭😭😭
I couldn’t work this scenario into the fic I’m writing, but wanted to put my sad (pre-S1?) Tommy thoughts somewhere —
Tommy’s been with Abby for a while and he wants it to work — he needs it to work — but deep down he’s afraid it never will. He needs a place where he drop the mask for a little while and pretend he can have everything, so he joins a gym in WeHo that’s far out of his way and open 24 hrs. He introduces himself as “Joe” to anyone who’s interested and keeps to himself unless someone asks him to spot.
A few guys suggest meeting in the steam room but Tommy always politely declines. Then, one Tuesday night, after a particularly long day of feeling like shit about himself and pushing way too hard on the bench, he showers, wraps his towel low on his waist, and takes a seat inside.
It’s not cheating if I’m only looking, he reasons. When the guy opposite spits in his hand and starts working his cock, Tommy convinces himself it’s not cheating, it’s research. It doesn’t matter that he’s hard, he’s just watching, that’s all.
Another man — tall, broad and dark — sits beside him. He’s about the same age as Tommy, with thick, black hair on his head and chest. He gives Tommy a careful glance and a small, knowing smile. Together, they watch the man across from them push his cock through his fist and say nothing to each other.
It happens again the week after. And the week after that one. And again a few days after that. There’s always someone willing to put on a show and Tommy’s finding any excuse to enjoy it next to his nameless man, instead of going home to sit next to the girlfriend who’s crazy about him.
Weeks come and go. In the steam room, Tommy and the man edge closer, their towel covered thighs teasingly close to touching. At home, Tommy feels like he’s going to tumble off the edge of his and Abby’s bed.
And then as quickly as it started, it ends. Tommy doesn’t see the man for close to two months. He puts in a crazy amount of overtime to patch up the broken heart he feels pathetic for having. He feels so sour and embarrassed that he cancels his membership and uses the station’s equipment full-time instead.
He’s doing fine. He jerks off and deletes his browser history like any respectable person and feels sick that he’s grateful Abby’s been too tired and preoccupied to make a move on him.
On a call one night he pulls a couple out of an apartment fire. Two men in their fifties who are so overwhelmed to see each other’s soot stained faces that anyone would think they’d been separated for years rather than moments. They’re in love in a way that Tommy’s never known — might never know — and he’s suddenly thankful for the gym’s ridiculous cancellation policy.
He goes back to the wooden bench he’s spent so much time on and waits. It takes almost a week before the man reappears. He looks broadly the same apart from the thick gold ring on his left hand. It’s a gut punch that Tommy ignores. It all makes sense now.
Across from them two guys are fucking like it’s the last thing they’ll ever do. Tommy edges closer to the man next to him and, with the kind of courage he thought he’d used up serving in the military, puts his hand on the man’s knee.
It’s electric. The man opens his towel enough to get a hand on himself and Tommy does the same. They drop their heads against the wall and turn to each other, eyes meeting properly for the very first time.
‘I’m Tommy,’ Tommy whispers.
‘I’m Adrian,’ the man whispers back, and puts his free hand on Tommy’s knee. ‘I came back to — I just wanted to see you one last time.’
They get themselves off just like that — seeing each other for the first and last time. It breaks Tommy’s heart to think Adrian will be a secret he’ll have to take to his grave, and after they’ve come and caught their breath, Adrian kisses his forehead and leaves.
The next day, Tommy buys an engagement ring.
