Wintersong by S. Jae Jones: A review
First, I would like to give this author the credit for breaking my book hangover and bringing me back into the fold. Nothing has held my attention long enough or in-depth enough to finish the story in its entirety since my Sarah J. Maas spree of 2017. Wintersong is heartbreaking. It is magical, it is a reality, it is crushing, it is fulfilling, it is raw in every chapter, and it is intoxicating. I found myself hooked right away. Even as someone who isn't as knowledgeable as the author in even half of the musical terms mentioned, I still managed to understand what was being conveyed during Elizabeth's musical outbursts. Right away you get the sense of mystery and magic even though the Goblin King doesn't make his appearance known right away. Just the knowledge of his mere existence seemed to set the tone of the story.
"This is going to be a magical ride, and it's going to hurt at every turn and you'll love it no matter how much it makes your heart bleed," I told one of my book loving friends. The characters are very understandable. Real in their own right and one can easily relate to almost every character given their diverse personalities. I felt myself liking and disliking every single character in the book, which I also found relatable because I typically like and dislike something about everyone in the real world. I will have to say though, this book is one of the very few that I allowed to abuse my poor tender heart. And it did this, over and over and over. Just as it made me love it, it made me cry real tears only pages later. Beware 'ye who enter here. This book is brutal to the tender-hearted. And even still. As I sat down to write this review I was furious. The ending ruined me. I couldn't believe the choices the characters made. I felt they were too neat and tidy, and selfish (which they know) and it made no sense when you put together all the clues given by the underground. I have this love-hate relationship with Elizabeth in the book. I find her brilliant and incredibly stupid all at the same time, and the ending was another stupid moment. HOWEVER! As I popped up Goodreads, wiping off the dust that has settled on the website on my side of the internet. I furiously typed out "Wintersong" in the book search and low and behold, there is a second book. Anger has instantly vanished and my rant to my husband in the likes of "If there isn't a second book in the near future I'm going to be livid!....... Nevermind. There's a second book." He laughed and went back to his office. Looks like I have more reading to do. Hold, please.
