How do mercs work with an s/o (or teammate, I don't mind) that likes to take care of stray animals? Like every night they leave out food for them n stuff to the point they can go out one day and some random cat will come up to them for food

Oooo this was an interesting one to write for! I hope it turned out well to your liking, im sorry im a bit late getting to this ask! I couldn’t pick between the reader being their s/o or just a friend so its up to interpretation :)

hope that your animals aren't too feral because Scout loves animals and will absolutely want to be around them and help feed them or play with them

He doesn't even question it until it's like the 4th or 5th time he's seeing you with them and then goes "Uhh how did this even happen?"

I feel like he would buy the wrong food for them. Like for example if you had a bunch of cats he would accidently get dog food. To be fair there was no dog photo on it and it showed fish and meat. He's trying his best

He asks about them like if any of them have names or toys they like. He might ask how the cats got there but he never really questions the whole thing to begin with. "Oh a hoard of animals? They're all yours? Thats cool :)"

Soldier

How could you not tell him about this sooner! You have all these friends and never mentioned it? It’s a very exciting discovery for him

He swears that his raccoons are friendly and insists that your animal friends and his coon should have a playdate

If you let him around the creatures he likes to play rough with creatures so you will have to tell him to be gentle or maybe to try and not wrestle your animals

He won’t keep quiet about it either unless you say so, so if the whole base suddenly knows and you get a random message from Pauling asking about the animals you will know why. He means well, he is just very excited about the critters and thinks they are really cool

Pyro

Pyro audibly gasps when seeing you with a new little buddy and whether you understand Pyro already or not, Pyro will start squealing and talking so quickly the words are basically incoherent

Pyro likes to watch you tend to the animals if you allow it. Pyro won’t engage with them unless they come up to Pyro

Lots of giggling and snickering and will happily get you things to take care of them 

Pyro promises not to bring fire around them! As much as Pyro loves fire, Pyro wouldn’t want one of them getting hurt

Demoman

he doesn’t really say anything about it but at the same time he doesn’t really know what to say either. He’ll walk outside randomly and see you hanging out with a random creature and he’ll be like “Good for you” and leaves gjkfjknd

He isn’t surprised at this point cause like over half the team has a bunch of animals, he just warns you about being careful the Administrator doesn’t find out and if you let them inside that they don’t leave too much hair/feathers/shedded skin/etc. or pee anywhere 

Very friendly and he’ll probably ask a few times if he can pet them or gives them gentle scratches

Pretends to give them highfives. He’ll hold up one of their paws/hand/wings/etc. and pretend to highfive or fist bump it. He’s a little flustered when you first catch him doing this but he laughs it off

Heavy

He will ask you a lot of questions about them but in a curious good way! Questions like what do they like to eat, where do they stay, do they have clean water and toys, those kinda stuff!

He will recommend you a lot of good places to go to like trustworthy vets(no offense to Medic, he’s good but he’s.. well he’s Medic), stores that provide free foods for animals or at least ones for cheap prices and such!

He has such a soft spot for them even if he hardly knows them. Whenever he passes by you he tells you to say hello to your creatures for him

He will occasionally ask about them to see if they are okay

Engineer

he’s probably the only one to really question it, like how did they get here and how long has this been going on and such

He probably notices to food and water you had been leaving out and connects the dots

I feel like he would offer helping out like cleaning the bowels you leave out for them and putting it in a spot where bugs dont get to it

If you ever come back and you got dirt or claw marks from a small tussle with them he will (caringly) laugh at you before helping you get cleaned up

Medic

Tells you a bunch of animal facts based on whichever creatures or critters you are bringing in

Tells really basic obvious ones too that just about everyone would already know but he is has a stupid grin the whole time too. Nobody knows if he does it ironically or unironically

He will ask if he can experiment on them, even if he already knows that you aren’t going to let him do it he will still asks

He will gladly take care of them if any get injured and such

Absolutely love the thought of Spy keeping the Santa facade going on even when Scout is no longer a kid and still giving Scout Christmas presents and getting really upset when it gets ratted out that Santa isn’t real bfnfjfjsksjsh I feel like he would try giving Scout a “personal visit from Santa” (aka him disguised as Santa)

Sniper would totally fall for ligma and deez nuts jokes and get wildly confused whenever someone used some term like poggers or no cap. I feel like he would fall for the jokes several times too. Like he would be tricked into the ligma thing several times before realizing where it’s headed everytime.

As someone who is terrible at understanding sarcasm or certain jokes or rhetorical stuff I highly agree on Soldier also having trouble picking up on these things. Like someone tells a joke “what do you call a cow with no legs? Ground beef” and he just stares at then blankly until the joke is explained and you either get a laugh out of him or he tells you not to become a comedian ausnsiajfkdjfnms

Like Spy’s gender is “Have fun guessing because I don’t even know what it is, when you figure it out you can tell me. Probably lost it somewhere so I’m claiming Agender all for myself and not sharing, don’t ask me what pronouns I use because I will never tell you so i guess you will just have to use a bunch of different ones for me ohhh nnoooooo”

 and like Pyro’s genderfluid is more of a “Hey guys I heard of this new xenogender and I’m really vibing with it so I think i’m going to be going with that today :) My pronouns can and will change on a daily basis, maybe even hourly and I didn’t ask if it was hard to keep up with, I’ve decided on flame/flames/flameself pronouns and if you dont start using it, I will be rattling you like a dogtoy”

Medic

He loves to encourage you to draw and bake and if you like his company while you do it he will gladly be with you and if you like to do it in your alone time that’s alright too!

He is fully equipped and is probably what he carries around in the small bags he has on his belt. He always has some earplugs or stim toys on him, especially ones he knows you would enjoy

Whether you tell him that you are autistic or you just tell him about you having sensory issues and such, he will ask you the best ways he can help you for when it happens. What can he do when you get overstimulated or understimulated? Would you want him to talk with you when you ramble about a special interest or that he just listens and comments when you are done?

He knows it’s different for everyone so if he seems like he’s asking a lot of questions he doesn’t mean to be invasive he just wants to support you and keep you comfortable

It can get noisy in his lab and its quite bright in some spots as well so if it’s too much he has noise cancelling earplugs and headphones and such to help, but he wouldn’t mind one bit turning the lights down for you. He would probably see it as an opportunity to do some experiments with the lights off

He notices the signs for when you are feeling or beginning to get over or under stimulated and will jump in to assist those things from getting too out of control

Sniper

He’s no expertise about this kinda stuff so you’ll have to help him out a bit

Gosh he loves it when you info-dump to him it makes him so happy he loves hearing you talk and he gets so sappy seeing you talk about it

If you like physical touch he will be honored if you use him as a stim toy like playing with his hair or drumming on him or heck if you wanna bite or chew on him he wouldn’t mind one bit

He isn’t normally one to start things but he willl fight someone for you that gives you any trouble for any habits you might have

he isn’t too ashamed about not being clothed so if texture is a thing that gets too much and you just wanna vibe without certain clothing pieces he will join you if you want him to

He really likes hearin you talk about things you enjoy or you draw about so he will ask you questions about it out of the blue

His brain shuts down a little when you do get overstimulated cause he wants to get you to a place where you are feelin alright so he sometimes might just grab you or come up with a random excuse to get out of the situation

Do you like routine? Cause this man is a literal NPC like he shows up in the same places at the same time and rarely breaks from it

Scout

He doesn’t know any sign language at all but if you try and teach him he will gladly learn

He gets frustrated because his memory is garbage and learning a new language already isn’t easy so he has a bit more trouble learning

He practices in his free time and will come in at the most random times where you’re asleep or in the middle of when you’re busy and ask you what a certain phrase or word in ASL would be

He will brag about it to the rest of the team. Even if he only knows how to sign “Hi”, “How are you?”, and “I love you” he will brag to the team about y’all having a secret language to talk in

When you do sign to him he needs a few seconds afterwards to think about it and he’ll sometimes lightly mimic what you sign to help him learn and understand

Pyro

Pyro knows ASL too! But Pyro is also a rascal and casually (playfully) smack-talks all the others behind their backs

If you prefer to sign with Pyro rather than have Pyro talk and you sign back then Pyro will get very invested and probably have several moments where Pyro forgets that a majority of the others doesn’t know how to sign at all

Pyro gets excited that theres someone else at the base who can be talked with that knows sign language and if you ask Pyro to sign while talking with you then there will be some stimming between some of the signing

Pyro likes your hands in general, you just have really nice hands, so Pyro gets a bit too sappy watching you sign

Soldier

He loves talking with you but he doesn’t know an ounce of ASL but he is certainly trying for you

He will probably drag you to Pyro and get Pyro to translate it before realizing he can’t even understand a lot of what Pyro says since it’s muffled by the mask

He is determined to learn it no matter how long it takes him. Heck, he’d even read a book on it if that meant learning

If there is anyone that picks on you or gives you weird looks this man will go feral. If you two are in like a Walmart and someone gives you some funny look then there will be one less living person inside that walmart

Demoman

He doesn’t know ASL but he does know a bit of BSL which goes well until he realizes that they are just about completely different

He’s still very open for learning and definitely invests a lot of time into learning

You’ll probably see him talking verbally with someone and he’ll be signing a bit just to help him memorize it and to practice

I feel like he would accidentally sign something bad like a foul word and he would be completely unaware that he did it

Heavy

He’s at that weird spot in language learning where when someone else speaks (or in this case, is signing) he can understand it but he slips up and has trouble remembering how to do it himself

If you are apart of a conversation and the others are talking and skip over what you are trying to say then Heavy will pause the conversation and have you let you get your say in

He learns terms of endearment and how you sign your name!

He thinks its cute when you two are holding hands and you pull your hand away to sign and go back to holding his hand afterwards

Engineer

He knows quite a bit from hanging around Pyro, its a lot of basic stuff but enough where he can understand a majority of things

He is very firm with other people and would never put you in a situation where you are being pressured into talking vocally and if anyone tries he immediately gets sour

He will give you a lot of kisses while you are signing simply just because he can

He has basic respect and just like with anyone else he would never talk over you or interrupt you

Medic

He knows a quite bit of ASL but he is always up for learning more

He doesn’t know what to say or how to compliment you or encourage you to not feel shy about it so he probably says something wacky like “You have really good hands, do you know how hard it is to come by a good pair of working hands? They sell for a lot”

He likes having you around while he is experimenting and he’s reached a level where he can completely execute whatever procedure he is working on while also watching you sign

He will occasionally grab your hands when you finish signing the statement you are saying and kisses your hands

Sniper

He actually thinks it comes in handy and really likes it(no pun intended) he doesn’t like a lot of loud things and he himself doesn’t talk too much

If your on the battlefield or in some sticky situation it would be hard to tell him something without whoever your against hearing, but sign language? Not many people know it and it’s quiet so you can easily communicate something to him

If he’s really invested in something you might have to tap him or give him a poke to get his attention

He will certainly try learning but he is..not the greatest at it

Spy

It’ll be hard finding a language he doesn’t know!

He thinks its fun that you two can be completely across the room and still hold a conversation, and its really helpful if you are in a situation you don’t like and can’t really get to him for some reason

If you prefer it he’ll actually respond back in sign language too

If you’re around someone that isn’t good he won’t hesitate to immediately start smack talking the person to you

He's incredibly surprised and quite humbled as well! He really thought he was the top of his profession so to have someone come in and one up him! Especially in his own lab! The audacity

He's a bit short-tempered about it but he doesn't mean to be so rude, he just wasn't prepared for it and it was a bit of a blow to his ego

He will be salty about and and a smartass until he just accepts that there will be people better than him in his profession

He just wants to be the best of the best to you and the possibility of you findin someone else better than him and liking it more is a gutting feeling to him

Medic quickly realizes that having his crush be in the top-league of his own profession gives him some immense bragging rights though and he enjoys it

Sniper

fuck. He is too busy being in shock and ogling over you to remember he has an ego

He actually gets slightly worse at his job because whether its training at the base or out on the battlefield he keeps getting distracted admiring you

His brain is out in space so you are going to have to repeat anything you tell him

Don't point it out for his sake. If you point it out he will dig himself so deep into denial he will actually convince himself that he doesn't even have a crush on you to begin with

brutally obvious that this man finds you really cool and if you don't mind sharing he would love to hear about your backstory

Spy

Fairly similar to Medic but not to such an extreme degree and the process is a lot quicker for him as well. He is impressed, then humbled, then admiration

He gives you an icy look anytime you do give him a tip but this eventually smooths into him playfully rolling his eyes about it

Later on he actually purposely goes to you and asks you for tips, he really just does it to hear you ramble and see your reaction to him asking you for tips

He has some major lighthearted ‘enemies’ to lovers vibes in the beginning 

“Shhhh, do you hear that?” Spy proceeds to pause for a moment before cloaking and running off

^^^^ he does that for a while, at first he did it for his own sake but then he enjoyed being an ass to you and ducking on you like that

Heavy is normally the guy that does the listening so to have someone do the listening for him takes him off guard a bit

He’ll gladly tell you about the things he enjoys but he’ll almost always follow up with an eyebrow raise to check if he’s actually hearing what you’re saying

Already having you listen is enough to make him happy but if you show signs of being fully engaged and even ask him a few questions and really gets to him

I feel like this would become a pass-time thing for you two. Y’all just go up to each other and if you want to talk but don’t know what to talk about Heavy will just mention something about a book he’s been reading recently or bring up his guns

He’s not a man of many words but he’s definitely a man of many thoughts. He won’t say everything that he is thinking but he’ll probably be a bit more vocal around you

He likes hearing about the differences yall have, like different gun preferences or what types of book you read. Are you picky about these things or are you lenient about it? Is there a certain category you enjoy or do you just stumble across things you like and what variety doesn’t matter?

Do you have trouble focusing? Heavy has become a mastermind at reading while the rest of the team is, well, being the rest of the team. Now i know what you’re thinking, “but theres no special trick I’ve already tried it all!” Yes, but have you tried Heavy’s noise cancelling earplugs or headphones? An atomic bomb could drop and you wouldn’t notice

Don’t tell anyone but he really enjoys reading to you or letting you read to him

He will give you kisses or hold your hand while you two talk together, or just small gestures of affection like getting you a drink or a pillow
