Might be imagining things, but have you noticed how he first leans into the embrace, his face onto Will's shoulder?
I mean, he could've pulled Will closer first, without moving an inch. An act of power and having control over Will in his hands. But HE LEANED FIRST.
Maybe, only maybe, he NEEDED this embrace for comfort. It wasn't a terrifying gesture, it was meant for HIM, not Will. The embrace he imagined he'd get from Will, if they had run away together. The one that could've been a fresh start but it turned into a farewell.

Okay I need people to look at these two gifs together:
This gif made by @lousolversons
And this gif by @not-psychotic
THAT IS THE SAME SMILE. THAT IS HUGH DANCY'S ROMCOM SMILE AND I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS ABOUT THE DIFFERENCES IN THE WAY HUGH PRESENTS IT FOR EACH MOMENT.
First of all, the moment presented in the first gif is why I believe Will did love Molly. Yes, I'm a firm believer that Will still held feelings for Hannibal while he was with Molly, but I don't think she was a placeholder. The way I think Will's love for Hannibal and Molly works at the same time is like when you meet a widower who remarried.
Yes the widower (Will) still loves his first spouse (Hannibal), and it's terrible that they were ripped apart the way they were, but he can eventually move on. And he loves his new spouse (Molly), but there will always be a part of his heart that belongs to his first spouse. Except in the case of this analogy Hannibal isn't actually dead and he will come back.
And I mean, honestly, if the love of your life died and came back completely in one piece and still loved you after years of separation, what would you do? Would you tell them to move on because you've found someone else that you love almost as much as you loved them? Or would you discard your new spouse for the one you had always imagined you'd stay with? It's a really difficult decision.
But anyway I do wanna analyze these smiles. Obviously in the second gif Will is smiling at Hannibal, but in the first gif, Will is smiling at Jack while talking about Molly. They're the same smile but they're also so different.
In the first gif, the "romcomness" of the smile almost feels exaggerated. It's the way he smiled and kind of laughed but especially it's the way he broke eye contact. He breaks eye contact but the smile stays. It says "Molly and I can't see each other completely, but I'm happy enough." It reads as coy in a way we know Will Graham is not. It's a performance, but it's a performance based on a truth.
On the other hand, in the second gif, Will's smile is there but more subdued. Of course it could be just that he's tired and/or in pain as he's obviously injured, but to me it's lesser because it's just him and Hannibal. He doesn't need to wear his mask for Jack or for Molly or for anyone else. And he keeps eye contact with Hannibal even as his smile falls away because he and Hannibal can see each other. They accept the good (the smile) and the bad (the loss of the smile) in each other but that's okay for them because they're true to each other like they are to no one else.
The way Will smiles at Hannibal in the second gif is so much more intimate than the way he smiled about Molly in the second gif, and I can't help but wonder: if we got more scenes where Will and Molly were interacting face to face (because let's be honest there's not many), would Will smile the same way he did in the second gif? Would he even smile at her the same way he does talking about her in the first gif, or is that just him trying to appear like the happy/satisfied husband in front of company? I know Will loved Hannibal, and I know Will loved Molly, but these two gifs side by side just confirm for me that what he felt for Hannibal was so much more impactful for Will than his love for Molly.

For both of us.
Hannibal's first attempt to convince Will to kill together is in S02, episode 12, when he suggests they go after Mason, after carefully planning Will's anger towards Mason for what he did to Margot and their baby.

S02e12 Tome-Wan
Hannibal actually drags Mason into Will's house, and when Will arrives he teases him suggesting he should be the one to end Mason's life. But Will refuses, and Hannibal finishes him while Will is observing.
This is not what Hannibal has hoped, but he's still pleased with Will's reaction, which he looks up for after breaking Mason's neck.
He has to wait almost four years to be able to fulfill his desire, wait until the Red Dragon shows up. Only then he can repeat the same line he told Will in his office, almost a lifetime before: "This is all I ever wanted for you, Will. For both of us."
To be one with Will, to hunt and kill with him, to enjoy that savage pleasure with the person he has loved and desired for so long. Finally, he's happy.

Gentle reminder that "I'm alone in that darkness" is something Will felt like confessing to Hannibal in season 2, so post encephalitis. His anguish is not related to hallucinations, dissociation or fever. During the horse episode he is really struggling because he cannot hate Hannibal, he doesn't know why he cannot hate Hannibal if Peter can hate his social worker. He is feeling lonely and he is kinda spiraling and kinda too involved in Peter's case so there is very much going on in his closeted gay neurodivergent brain.
He looks a bit taken aback when Hannibal promises him that he is standing right beside him. I love that he says that. It's a bit of comfort that Will isn't getting from anyone else. Jack is like "Okay Will, you might be alone in that darkness but you are saving lives" and Alana is like "Oh, Will, poor you, the hopeless victim of that darkness."
Meanwhile Hannibal is like "I am standing right beside you" which is honestly the best thing anyone could have said to such a confession. Will never complains about his state. Hannibal is the person who has witnessed his most vulnerable states, break downs, seizures, inner feelings and so on.
And even after being framed by Hannibal, Will still feels like he is a safe space to share his anguish.

When Hannibal tells Will he's family and (according to the script) Will gets a wave of emotion, I can't help but feel the urge to scream because yes we know they bonded in season one but specially in season two, and all but do you realize that we never actually saw how much they bonded? we saw plot relevant scenes but the rest??? how many nights were they having dinner? how many after-therapy times they just hung out in Hannibal's office? how many times they cooked together? the long conversations in front of the fireplace, the mundane little chats about random things. I WANT TO 💀 I NEED IT

I was thinking of how Hannibal says "You cannot control with respect to whom you fall in love" and I am obsessed with his choice of words, especially the preposition "to". You would usually say "I fell in love with you" not "I fell in love to you" but the preposition "to" was needed because of the "respect to whom" phrase which is very formal and peculiar but very much Hannibal.
And I love this choice of words because I feel like he really gives a dynamic direction to "falling in love". It makes the whole confession sound like he himself had no choice but to surrender to Will. He puts a lot of emphasis on the indirect object to whom he had fallen to, and that is Will.
And we can go even deeper (I was a humanities major in highschool before commiting myself to psychology), falling to someone implies that you fell from somewhere. And I think this is exactly how it feels to Hannibal. He likes playing God. He is almighty. He is almost inhumane. And because of Will, he fell, he is now a simple man who is in love and who "cannot control" his own feelings. Since when can't Hannibal Lecter control to whom he falls in love??
So not only did he fell in love but the whole experience took away his God title and kicked him down on Earth, like a fallen angel (thanks Mads for saying that).

Something the Hannibal television show does phenomenally, that the books and movies don’t really do at all, is showcase how well he actually blends in.
In the Thomas Harris works, every scene that Doctor Lecter is in manages to make it very clear that he’s dangerous, and everyone else is basically Damocles without being aware of the blade. He’s unsettling even when he’s charming, and the audience is always aware that he is the lion in the room. We can see the swords dangling by the hair over every other character.
But in the show, Hannibal is just a guy, maybe pretentious and nerdy, but charming and kind for the most part. We are taken in with him, just like the other characters. Then, when he does lash out, moving like the predator he is, we’re left absolutely shook, almost ashamed that for a moment we forgot who he is. In the next scene, he’s as soft and charming as ever, and the deception begins again. We slowly fall under the spell again, because he’s just that good. We experience what the characters do, even though we’re granted the behind the scenes knowledge that he’s the villain of the story.
