When we meet Anemone and first learn of this soul-destroying stuff. Her magic is at the service of her mother and blister and the seawing tribe. She's being made to perform these tricks at a personal cost with no agency of her own. If you ask me that sounds pretty soul-destroying. Albatross was in a very similar boat. Hell, the fanon and implied reason for his actions lines up pretty exactly with a feeling that he had no autonomy over his life. Nothing to do with the whole 'terrible things make the next one that much easier' that canon likes to push.

And look at other tribe's suspicions. If the skywings treated animus magic anything like they treated firescales then they sure would have a lot of rogue animi and believe they're all inherently dangerous. What if the icewing one gift tradition wasn't to protect the souls of their animus dragons but to protect them from the eternal debt of always being solicited for more by queens and kingdom. Arctic never used his magic that much. But he felt the same effects because he was living in a tribe that only cared about what his genes could do for them.
