SHIRANAMI5 - the music project series you know NOTHING about

Flashback to around two months ago, I must've been a little bored with the absence of content from both Obey Me and Ex and Bee, and remembered on Kyohei Yaguchi's (Beel's VA) profile he had accredited himself as the voice of Yamato..

Who's Yamato..? It took a while for me to actually get searching but I had found that the character was a part of a series known as SHIRINAMI5, with its own website and TV series. Immediately as I saw "TV series" I thought I'd never be able to properly watch them before doing some transatlantic backflips to even stream the thing. However.. all the episodes were just here, listed on Youtube and categorized into their own mini seasons.

..Right, let's get started

NB: I rewatched it again just to get the gist of the story, though a lot of the text here will be somewhat reminiscent of my first impressions which were live-tweeted to some friends. The photos here are mostly screenshots from their official website here.

SHIRANAMI5 describes itself as "an entertainment group" gathered together to "do good deeds". You will be hearing this phrase a lot. Get used to it.

We have (from left to right) five protagonists, known as Issei, Riki, Yamato, Kikka and Shinpei, who all join this group to create music together.

In episode 0, we all get more personal self introductions to the cast and oh my god..

No, but seriously, he is "good at crossdressing", and is also the... looks at notes.. a "big sister" type? Really?

He's really hot. Like, really hot. Look at how much softer and warm his face is here. I'm straight, but men are really hot... (/j)

Regardless, Kikka's my favorite out of the five, and was probably the least popular in the fandom.. if there even was one.

Listen, if there's absolutely no coherent Japanese results with a browser search, what makes you think that there's even going to be any in English? The videos have a lower view count than Ex and Bee, moreover it pains me that such a series never really got a chance to shine with a large audience. These characters are really likeable, and even without subtitles there were some moments that made me laugh. The art work is commendable even with the vibrant usage of stock footage.. lol.

Overall, I really did enjoy the series even with the language barrier; I want to be able to translate and subtitle all the episodes in English soon, but I'm not fluent.. but eventually I want this series to gain enough of a cult following for that to eventually happen.

With the series that was published also came a few character songs released, and below the cut is my own ranking of them (PLEASE don't let this discourage you from listening to the songs; they're good in their own way)

INGABANSHOU- VA Gaiya Suzuki.. Is this even a contest?? instrumentals amazing but the vocals are what really gets it for me. I may be biased, but Kikka's song is the best out of them, especially with those goddamn POWERFUL vocals!!!!

Zokkon! My Heart - VA Kodai Sakai. Upbeat, jumping, I swear Kikka's vocals are here, but it's such a charming song. Love the rock/indie feel the song has.

iroha - VA Kyohei Yaguchi. There is a reason this song became an inside joke between friends. The "ha, ha, ha, ha"'s will live in your head till you die. Kyohei's vocals here are quite charming.

fight for LOVE - VA Itsuki Nishimura: his song isn't even that bad.. Again, it gets better the more you listen but man this song is just BORING.

CODE RIKI-GAKU - VA Jion Shiraki. Flat boring vocals with an arguably weird instrumental. He's hitting the notes yes, but is that not a prerequisite for singing?

Honorable Mention

Winner or Loser: Couldn't rank it anywhere, but I didn't like it. 4th or 5th in my ranking, maybe. I'm not sure if it's comparable. Instrumentals really really tryyy to carry the song but them collectively singing at the same time for pretty much all of it makes the song feel flat and repetitive. The slight mishaps in pitch and tone whilst singing just sell this song out.
