In the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 (known internationally as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels), if Mario defeats Bowser in World 8-4 by touching the axe on the same frame as dying, then the ending cutscene will proceed as normal, but without Mario. Note Peach talking to Mario despite Mario not being present.

Extremely rare high-quality official artwork of a Burner Shy Guy from Yoshi's Story, found only in a Japanese official guide for the game.
These appear only at the end of Magma Castle, the last and most difficult to unlock level of the game, so that many players who did not specifically try to fully explore all levels might never have encountered these enemies.

Left: original model used to render Mario's sprites for the SNES version of Super Mario RPG, found in a 2024 Japanese guide for the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Note that this is the first time this model has ever been shown to the public.
Right: compare this to the model used in the game's promotional artwork, which has different proportions for an unknown reason.

Top: a pre-release screenshot of Mario Superstar Baseball, published on the IGN gaming news website in 2005 (note the IGN logo in the bottom right).
Bottom: in the game, the preview image for Mario Stadium uses that exact screenshot, including even part of the IGN logo, seen overlapping Mario's shoe.
This indicates that the developers, despite having full access to the game's code and being able to take any kind of preview screenshot they could want without any restrictions, instead went online and took a screenshot from a gaming journalism website without even editing out the logo.

Pages from an officially licensed 1982 Donkey Kong coloring and activity book, detailing Mario's feelings for Pauline. Note that this predates Mario's profession being established as a plumber in 1983, which is why he is depicted as a carpenter instead.

The manual for Mario Artist Communication Kit, software for the Japan-only Nintendo 64DD add-on for the Nintendo 64 that allowed users to connect to the Internet and upload Mario Artist creations, features an illustration in its manual that explains a secure online transfer of images using Mario characters.
Mario is uploading "secret works 🩷" into a Randnet Net Studio "exchange box" while sharing the ID and password offline with Peach, the intended recipient. She is then able to retrieve the works from the exchange box using the ID and password she received from Mario, while Bowser, who represents a third party who is not the intended recipient, is unable to access them due to not knowing the ID and password.
