i keep thinking about this because most other games would game over if you fail a major objective by way of killing a plot critical npc, but the more i think about it, it feels like a feature rather than a bug. goldeneye is built around repeat attempts on levels; its higher difficulties introduce more objectives which require more detailed knowledge of the level from the player, it times you at the ends of stages encouraging you to play again and again to get faster and faster, even unlocking cheat codes is tied to getting good. letting the player continue despite their initial failure is a part of that process of mastery, as instead of having to start over, they can continue the level, learn what lies ahead, and then have a more complete picture for their next try, allowing for a higher chance of success. This is as opposed to getting booted immediately and thus being in the dark about everything past their failure point. its a p interesting way of handling things.

i don't even like playing fps on console but this is an interesting one given that it was made before the standardization of twin stick. plus it doesn't care to be scripted given the technical limitations at the time; i panicked due to being at low health and thought 006 was an enemy and shot him, which aggro'ed him in response, yet after killing him it wasn't an immediate game over state. not paying attention was def a skill issue on my part, but its interesting to see how much the game lets you live with the consequences of your actions
