I've been working on a library-themed patch vest for a bit, and since it's Solarpunk Aesthetic Week, I figured it'd be fun to post what I have so far.

The Back. [ID: The back of the same vest, which currently features 5 patches. The biggest one covers most of the back panel, and reads "Support Your Local Library, Free Information is Punk". The other patches include a UFO patch that reads "I'm Out", a book patch that reads "The Characters are Fictional, but the Emotional Damage is Real", and a patch with an image of an oak leaf and acorns. I need to make more patches for this one, so if anyone has suggestions, I'd love to hear them! 😁

I think it might be a picture-less solarpunk week for me :( but I’m still doing stuff! Today I spent some more time in the garden. I got the sunchokes in the ground today! Sunchokes are like sunflowers but perennial with fucked up edible roots :). It took me ages to dig the holes for them because our soil is so full of rocks and pieces of glass probably left over from when they built the house in the 50s :/. Not ideal, but we’re making it work.

I’m reading Gaia’s Garden by Toby Hemenway, which I highly recommend! It is an excellent and inspiring guide to permaculture. I just read the chapter on mulching, so I’ve been collecting green and brown material from around my yard to start the beds. Lots of raking and weed-pulling. On the bottom will be a layer of newsprint to smother weeds, then a layer of green yard waste like grass and other weeds, a layer of compost, and a layer of brown like twigs and leaves. It’s like making compost in the beds—the matter decomposes in place into rich soil. Only the best for my baby plants.

In the future I plan to add an arbor entryway covered in wild grapevines and a swale lined with blueberry bushes. I’m hoping to get the blueberries from my coworker and grandfather, who each have a few—either through clippings or transplants. I’m hoping to grow a variety of wildflowers as well—including goldenrod, milkweed, aster, and coreopsis. If you live in New England and have any plant recommendations (especially for native nitrogen-fixers), let me know!

Today for Solarpunk Aesthetic Week, I did something I wanted to do for a bit. I went and put some shelf stable food items in a little free pantry that’s near byish. (It’s like one in the city and there’s no other little free pantries for quite a while. Also it’s super cute they did great decorating it.)

And BOY am I glad I did that. It was nearly empty!!! I hope people would be able to enjoy some food!

Happy Solarpunk Aesthetic Week!!

I’ve been ultra busy since graduating and so I don’t have a ton ready to go this week :/ (I’m basically doing a deep clean of my dad’s house rn and it’s. Hard.) But! Today I went to get plants from a woman with an amazing garden living about an hour away from us. It was so beautiful! She had packed every spare space in plants save for a small yard where her whole family was sitting and enjoying the weather. Because of her I’m finally starting my native plant food forest! I got two hazelnuts, some raspberries, stinging nettle, bee balm, and a few inedible things like bloodroot :) I’m adding all these to my white walnut, my black raspberries, wild strawberries, and sumac. I can’t wait for them to settle in and stop wilting. I’ll try to add pictures tomorrow :).

The other thing I’m working on is darning a pair of socks!! At this point all I have to do is weave in the ends. Pictures should be incoming for that as well.

I can’t wait to see what yall do!

Not seeing anyone talk about it, so Greta Thunberg and three other activists on the Madleen have been released by Israel. I can't find the names of the others who accepted deportation, but Greta Thunberg is back in France.

Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament who was also onboard the Madleen, has refused deportation along with the other 7 remaining passengers. She specifically said that she refused to sign a document stating she had entered Israeli waters illegally. She and the other seven passengers will face an Israeli court this week. They are in danger. Spread the word.

Israel cuts Gaza's final internet line, plunging it into total communication blackout.

Israel bombed the last main fibre route in Gaza, which means that as of June 12, all internet and fixed-line communication services are now completely cut off, further isolating Gaza amidst an ongoing genocide.

I am seeing more and more calls from inside of Gaza for help with eSims as that is currently the only way they can connect internally and with the outside world.

Friends, Romans, countrymen, potential saviors:

We took one of our community cats to the vet yesterday to get his balls taken off and to see about a wound on his head

And long story short, Johnny Purrdreau is the sweetest, most delightful, utterly darling boy. He hasn’t stopped purring all day today and just wants loves and pets and food and more pets and snuggles. We cannot keep him! We have three cats and he’s FIV+ (but otherwise has totally clean bloodwork) so my mom is dead set against him staying with us.

I cannot emphasize enough how loving this cat is. He’s around a year old and has had a hard go of it - he’s been a scrapper and has shown up at our place limping, bleeding, and crying - and yesterday we were finally able to get him to the vet and get him taken care of. But now he’s going to have to go back outside and it’s breaking my heart.

Johnny is currently living near Sacramento, but I will drive him anywhere within a six hour distance if someone wants to adopt him. He’s freshly neutered, vaccinated for rabies, on flea treatment, was dewormed, given antibiotics for the (rapidly healing) owies on his head and paw. Twenty four hours inside has shown us that he knows how to use a litter box (he currently has liquid poop, but that’s something that can be addressed) and hasn’t shown any indications of spraying.
