In this very self-indulgent headcanon of mine, Will loves to take Jem outside at night and watch the sky over London. He loves the sensation of the wind on his skin and the absence of fear; the absolute certainty that he can let himself be. Jem loves to feel Will close, steady, and open; he loves how comforting and comfortable he gets. He also loves the smell of Will's jacket when he lets him borrow it because, despite how nice the night air is, for Jem it's still too cold outside.

There's no other place they'd rather be.

It’s half past three in the morning and while Alec normally doesn’t sleep till at least eight or nine, he feels dead on his feet.

His muscles are sore and heavy, every unnecessary movement an ache that he can’t afford and he closes his eyes just a minute to get his thoughts under way.

It was stupid to spar with both Izzy and Jace before going on a double patrol, but Alec hadn’t really had a choice.

Sacrifices have to be made for progress to happen and while Alec’s gotten better at delegating things, welcoming Jace and Izzy back from Idris — especially with a mountain of changes they both hate — well, something has to give.

As usual when it comes to his siblings, any price to be paid comes from Alec.

Of course it won’t remain that way for long, but Alec understands that some changes have to be slower than others and thankfully, Magnus understands that as well.

Except even in this, not all things remain the exact same.

Alec isn’t heading back to the Institute to slump wearily behind his desk and trudge through hours of paperwork. Instead he’s on his way to Magnus’, knowing that before he gets anywhere near the tablet he’s left there, he’ll be led to a bath first.

Magnus will insist on taking care of him.

Spoiling him really.

No matter how much Alec insists that just the bath is enough — that Magnus doesn’t need to waste potions on him — Magnus won’t be swayed.

So, despite the fact that Alec knows Magnus can just summon it for them, Alec stops at a little fae run cafe. One that never closes and that Alec doesn’t need to worry about glamours to visit.

They’re used to him by now and Alec is once again grateful to have been introduced to these hidden places of the shadowworld. It takes some time for them to grow accustomed to his continued presence, but for Alec — whose never been curious or called to by mundane spaces — its a relief.

While there is nothing wrong with mundane places, the logistics of going to one require preparation. Here, Alec can even just text an order and know that even if it takes him longer than it should, the drinks will never go cold.

He grabs them both and nods, knowing that his account is prepaid to a certain degree — as they accept ingredients rather than money — before leaving.

There is no talking, no anything but getting the drinks and leaving and while shadowhunter instincts warn him to drink something made by a fae, Alec knows better than to let it take over now.

This is an exchange.

A proper one and no fae would risk the ramifications of being so widely known and going back on their word.

The cider tastes hot like Magnus’ magic when he summons flames to contain demons and fresh. Like he’s sipping the drink from the vein of a sun-warmed apple.

The spices linger on his tongue and the back of his throat with a flare of heat and then he’s at Magnus’ door. Only a few sips and it was enough of a distraction that he can let himself relax.

Even his aching muscles can’t stop how his lips curl into an adoring smile and, as the door opens and his eyes meets a warm, golden gaze… Alec is home.

Even if he doesn’t quite know how to admit it yet.

Magnus greets him with a kiss, tasting the cider on his lips and tongue and giving him a soft smile before pulling him through the doorway and into the room.

The wards click into place behind and around him. Alec can feel them, pressing against him and he lets himself lean against the sturdy wood of the door as Magnus looks him over.

“Bath first, then some food.” Magnus murmurs, snapping his fingers even as he takes a sip from his cup. “No arguments this time, darling?”

Alec shakes his head, frankly too tired and too in love to do anything else.

Okay can we talk about Alec Lightwood and mental health for a second please?

If you notice in the show, most of the main male protagonists have unhealthy ways of coping with trauma.

In the case of Simon, he uses avoidance has his coping mechanism. Whenever things get tough, he avoids the problem instead of sorting his feelings out. Like when his mom found out he was a vampire, he made Raphael encanto the incident away. Also, after the Seelie Court incident, his initial reaction was to avoid Clary instead of telling her how he feels.

And Jace. Poor Jace is the classic example of how most men deal with trauma. He resorts to violence, aggression and self-hatred. We have multiple examples of Jace just breaking stuff around him or hurting himself or “focusing on a mission” when things get stuff. The latest example was of how he was mourning Clary’s death in the above manner in 3X11.

Then we have Magnus Bane. Even though Magnus looks like someone who has control of his emotions, I don’t really buy it. Magnus mostly deals with his trauma by deflecting it. He uses humor or flirtation or sometimes even alcohol to distract himself and others from the pain he is feeling. I have also noticed that Magnus (and Jace) have trouble accepting that they are in pain cause they don’t want to be perceived as weak. It broke my heart today when magnus mentioned that when he felt humiliated when Izzy, Alec and Catarina had to save him. Obviously, Magnus’s past has contributed to this, but the fact remains that his coping mechanism is not entirely healthy.

And finally, we have Alec. I think we can all agree that Alec had some serious issues dealing with his emotions and trauma in season 1. His character even dealt with a suicide attempt in 2X08. But what I love is just like every other part of Alec Lightwood how much his emotional stability and mental health has developed too. For someone who believed that “emotions are nothing but a distraction”, he has come a long way. For instance, in 03X05, we saw how he discussed his issues with Magnus’s immortality directly. He knew it is something he had to talk about. “I don’t think I can live without you”, “I’m nothing without him”, “I can’t lose you.” Alec Lightwood has zero fucks to give about toxic masculinity.

From helping Izzy with her addiction in season 2 and trying to help Jace deal with his “mental health” issues in season 3A, Alec really wants to encourage people around him to open up.

Alec Lightwood kept so much of himself to himself for so long, he knows how it feels to lock things up. And most importantly, he knows how good it feels to let things go. He has been through all of it and he just wants his family to experience the same freedom and happiness he feels now. I love Alec Lightwood.

Hi! 🫐 What’s your favorite underrated thing in your fandom? (A ship that only you seem to write for, a character there’s almost no fics about, a trope that criminally hasn’t been written yet, etc.)

i think the biggest thing that i feel is underrated that i love outside of some malec stuff, is team immortal.

i adore cat and ragnor and magnus and i think that they have some incredibly tight bonds. but because ragnor died there isn't much about him out there and i love reading when he is alive but i always want more

i think the biggest thing is pretending that there isn't a magical ward at the hospital because you cannot have obscenely rich warlocks interested in healing not fund and help get a magical ward in the hospital they work at.

like you know magnus and ragnor were bored one week while cat was complaining about being unable to safely take care of a warlock child with colic because of the magic and the next day there was a mysterious donation, a rather reclusive old englishman got involved and suddenly, there is an extra, super secret ward.

everyone thinks that it's for like politicians, crime lords, people who have a lot of money and want privacy meawhile in the ward:

baby warlock hiccuping with colic: k *cat's scrubs turn and stay searing neon orange*

also there is a giant lack of shifter au's, daemon aus, sentinel/guide aus, small magic aus, etc and i loveeeee all of those things

the shadowworld is magical and there is so little exploring the more magical side of the world and all these hidden realms that mundanes can't and dont know about and i just am so invested in exploring that and adding my own stuff

NEPHILIM ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE SPECIAL ABILITIES THE LD BLOODLINES BUT WE ONLY SEE IT IN CLARY. who then has extra special stuff because of her angel blood

also has no one considered that Helen also might have double angel blood? we don't know how her genetics work and gentics are weird. she could have angel/angel blood instead of angel/demon blood because she certainly isn't angel/human.

and eldritch nephilim/warlocks who have greater demn blood

Drawn this for a Malec fic Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn by Master of Unlocking. I started to watch the Shadowhunters show and after digging in piles of AO3 page this story hit me right through the heart…😍😍😍
