I understand that when folks criticise the self-labelled "cozy" genre as an effort to produce "games about nothing", they're talking about trying to opt out of having opinions by producing a game with a perfectly politically neutral premise (which is impossible), but whenever I see the phrase that gremlin voice in the back of my mind is like:

Diary of A Provincial Lady (1930) has a lot of strangely relatable social comedy moments, but one that’s standing out at the moment is when the narrator is invited to a party and told - the host knowing that she has literary ambitions - that the author of Symphony in Three Sexes will be there. This is meant to be an attraction, but the Provincial Lady hasn’t read the book.

The context implies that this book has a racy title in the 1930s setting and is going to be considered sexually progressive, but that it’s a must-read, and the author is nonetheless considered a hot social prospect suitable for any respectable party. The Provincial Lady, despite wanting to be a published author, often procrastinates and finds it difficult to admit that she doesn’t know what everyone else is talking about.

She tries to get the book from the local public library, and is judged by the librarian. She puts off learning about the book until too late, and at the party, can’t decide which guest wrote Symphony in Three Sexes, making a wild guess (thinking it’s a woman who turns out to be a Government Sanitary Inspector) but is proven wrong (it was a pale young man in glasses, “always so interesting on the topic of perversion.”)

This is interesting to me because - while Symphony in Three Sexes was made up - it’s something that would have been a believable and memorable title of the time, and is extremely funny to pretend to have read and - I forget why I started this post.

Also later in the series we learn how porn was advertised in the old days. People would send discreet handwritten letters to random addresses, offering to send you porn by mail
