Princess of Wales + Rings
The full post is live onĀ Patreon
Set on a rose gold Victorian band, the ring features two garnets which are Catherine'sĀ birthstoneĀ for January, andĀ pearlsĀ to represent Williamās birthstone for June.
The couple started dating in 2001, while at the University of St Andrews. During that time, it is suspected William gave Catherine a promise ring.
The Princess of Wales wore the ring on the day of her graduation in 2005, as well as, a couple of royal engagements in the early years but the jewel has escaped from view.

If you were to choose your top 3 jewellery surprise moments in the UK royal family, what would they be?
Top 3 Jewellery Surprises
ā¦ļøLovers Knot tiara The first time Kate wore the Lovers Knot tiara. It was so unexpected, I think everyone at the time thought sheād be wearing just the Lotus Flower for a lot longer and I remember everyone freaking out and it was justified as it was so amazing!
ā¦ļø Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara Princess Eugenie wearing the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara for her wedding day. Wedding tiaras are always exciting but when itās a tiara that we didnāt even know existed, it was such a surprise and so exciting!!
ā¦ļø Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara Queen Camilla wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara for the first time. I think because that tiara is so linked to the late Queen, I didnāt expect her to ever wear it and definitely I didnāt expect her to wear it so soon but Iām so glad that she did!
Bonus Mentions
ā¦ļø Princess of Wales' engagement ring A quick honourable mention to Kate being given Dianaās engagement ring. I think it was so lovely and I feel like it was a surprise that she got it and not a new ring but Iāve always loved it.
ā¦ļø Queen Alexandraās heart shaped brooch This was the jewel that started it all; I could't believe the size and colour of it. I thought this was the beginning of Camilla bringing jewels out but we are in a bit of a lull.

Queen Victoria's Bar Brooch

In 1839, Queen Victoria wore two bar brooches of collet diamonds, pinned three inches apart, to keep her Garter securely in place. Later, she had them reset as a double bar brooch, which she left to the Crown in her will, its description tucked away in a long list of jewelled orders.
There does seem to be two diamond bar brooches; one with 14 diamonds, which is usually suspected to be the description above and another with 10 diamonds (shown in the above picture).
The description and its picture of a 14 diamond bar brooch comes from Leslie Field's book which of course has its inaccuracies so this could be one of them.
The below shows the 14 diamond bar brooch on Queen Elizabeth II.

''Multi strand pearl necklace from Qatar to Queen Camilla''....was this gifted to her when she went with Charles on a Middle East tour some years ago or was a gift given during the Qatar visit last year? Are there any pictures?
For the list, Sophie wore a single pearl strand at Remembrance Sunday last year and there are pictures when she turnes that show the clasp (gold with a little pearl). Also the late Queen had a 2 strand necklace with ruby clasp that I think came from her mother as I saw a pic of her wearing it. Catherine's 3 strand necklace worn during the late Queen's mourning period has a diamond clasp with a pearl in the centre (there's a pic in one of the books featuring different jewels belonging to Elizabeth). Diana also had a black & white pearl necklace with matching earrings. Camilla wore the 3 strand necklace with diamond clasp from the Queen Mom's collection.
Do you think the Greville bequest had pearl strands and those worn by the Queen Mom might come from there?
The Qatar visit last year she was gifted the pearl necklace; i was surprised/saddened that she did not wear it for the state visit.
Oh there is a lot for sure, I did not even step into the realm of Diana's jewels because there is so many. Its unreal !
With the Greville bequest, there is just no way of knowing what was included in it because of how secret the contents of the request were kept when it was received. Itās very possible there were pearl strands, itās a fairly common piece of jewellery, especially for that time period and the generation that Mrs Greville was.
I think the biggest problem with identifying pearl necklaces is that, unless you get a good look at the clasp, they can be really hard to differentiate because they all look so similar.

Hi! I'm hoping Camilla will pull out one of the Queen Mother's Sautoir or the diamond one that belonged to Queen Mary š I don't mind long necklaces. As she wore a stomacher, I think she wouldn't mind the length.
It really would be so nice to see them !!
I had high hopes when she brought that stomacher out and now its all disappeared and we are not seeing many new jewels :(

Loved the jewellery choices with Sophie !! For another swap over Sunday, could you do her wedding jewels? Poor Edward, but those pearls were not it.
I was honestly tossing up between this jewel set and her aquamarine tiara for last week's post so I'm so glad that you suggested this! Because I also really dislike all of her wedding jewels. The pearls just aren't great (the earrings on their own I like but that is all I will admit to) and the tiara is just terrible so we should have some fun!

It's just not great, the tiara is an awkward shape and the pearl jewels just feel too chunky for wedding jewels and why does it include black pearls? And the weird spacing between the pearls, I will always hate this set!
Now, as this was worn right at the start of Sophie's royal life, we are restricted by the rules that the jewels worn must be something that they either owned at the time or were in the royal vaults. So we're going to have be a bit more creative.
Starting with Sophie's tiara. It is believed that this tiara was created using four anthemions that were originally intended to be used in Queen Victoria's Regal Circlet (this was never confirmed by the palace at the time or since but it is the widely accepted view). I feel that the intention from the Queen at the time was to provide Sophie with a tiara that she could use and would essentially belong to her, without handing over a tiara already in use from the vault. I've gone with a similar approach and have chosen the Teck Crescent tiara.

In 1999, when Sophie and Edward got married, this tiara was still in the possession of the Queen Mother. It was rarely worn and hadn't really been seen since the end of World War Two (this tiara would later be given as a life time loan to the then Duchess of Cornwall). Now, this tiara can be an issue as it can be quite large on the wearer's head (see below for the Queen Mother wearing this, you can see how far back this goes)

For Sophie, I would remove two, maybe three of the crescents on either side at the back of the tiara to give it a smaller circumference. I feel as though this would be a better size and more wearable while also giving it a bit of an update.
For earrings, I've gone with a pair of diamond pendant earrings that Sophie would borrow from the Queen years after her wedding.

I think that these earrings would be really nice as wedding earrings. They're definitely on the larger side, but I think that the open circle in the pendant doesn't make them feel like they're too much and balances them quite nicely.
I wasn't sure whether to add a necklace as well however, the neckline of Sophie's wedding dress is crying out for a necklace so I have opted for this diamond necklace.

Sophie wore this for the 2004 wedding of (the then) Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark and Mary Donaldson. I can't find really any information on this necklace (and if anyone has any, then please please share!) but I think it's gorgeous and I think would go well with the other jewel choices so we're going to say that this was available to her.
So those are the changes I'd make, this has probably been the hardest swap over Sunday as the choices were so restricted but I hope you enjoyed it and like these swaps. If you don't and you disagree then please share what you would have chosen instead!
