Character concept: A widely adored socialite who is so well-liked because she evidently just adores everyone right back. Not just social peers, those that outrank her and those beneath her, but everyone. She'll call every person she meets pet names, everyone is a "sweetheart" and "darling" to her, being just as interested in finding out what's troubling the heart of a random maid passing her in someone's mansion hallway as she is of the happiness and wellbeing of her own nieces.

The thing is, she's face blind as hell and also bad with names. So when she greets someone as "darling" and asks how they're doing like she's embracing a lifelong friend, there's like a 60% chance that she has no fucking clue who the hell this is and if she even knows this person at all.

Really does add to the theory that the cases are created like a tulpa. Some kind of alchemical catalyst (this case the fire), a focal point or symbol (in this case the toy in the window this symbol can be the catalyst as well) and enough people believing in the thing (kids looking in the window). The fact he changes depending on how people see him really adds to this.

100% yes, he has a degradation kink as well. The thing is that no Valjean (other than the evil, evil Neesonjean) would ever participate in it, knowingly or not. I think being degraded kind of fuels his self-hatred but also makes him hard so I dunno. It's great as far as he's concerned.

He probably has a wide definition for what counts as degradation as well. Madeleine could mildly admonish him for some small paperwork mistake and Javert would bite his lip and go "Uh-huh, monsieur, and then what?🥵 Are you going to punish me for being so naughty?🫦" Valjean is just confused.
