I like the idea of an alpha's instincts going completely haywire because of their omega (definitely used this idea in stories before, I don't write much fanfic, but I do write a lot of original work). So just Azula going batshit insane until Mai comes back to her, it works like magic. Suddenly she's her normal calm, rational self and focused on being that alpha that Mai fell in love with.

A lot of people kinda hate cheating, I think it's almost funny because I love to find a way to make it happen. Like, the novel I'm writing is currently titles "a cheating omegaverse porn romance novel".

In this one Zuko tonight he could get with Mai because between nobles, she's kinda the only that didn't treat him terribly for being a beta. At least in the beginning. Later on he noticed how close Maizula were and then he got obsessed with having Mai as a mate. (I change Zuko a little, but I keep the canon that Azula is a better sibling. Especially because like dragon!Azula claims people, alpha!Azula claims platonic mates and Zuko was one of them until he betrayed her.)

Mai's way too strong to be afraid. And even when Azula threatens to burn her (because in this AU, The Boiling Rock happens almost the same way), Mai doesn't feel scared. Azula has accidently burned her before, and Mai knows it'll hurt but she'll be fine.

Azula's very clingy and very protective. She's very soft when she's allowed to be soft.

I rather like the idea that Azula finds it impossible to harm her lover, as if her fire didn't burn and hurt her Omega, it would be so impossible even if she wanted to!

Azula's very clingy and very protective. She's very soft when she's allowed to be soft.

I love the idea of Mai saying "Tick" to Azula because that's her alpha! She is always above her.

Azula is soft when they are in their nest without any interruption, while she is in an awkward position because she doesn't want to hurt her Omega's belly, because she doesn't want to hurt her baby or her Omega.

In this AU she joins the Gaang and is NOT pleased by the fellow Fire Nation royals hunting them. Sure, Zuko's never that much of a threat (Azula is way more worried about what Iroh can do), but he keeps her on edge. Even before Azula officially claims the Gaang, they're already hers from the moment they are like "oh, nice dragon, you're our friend now".

It's pretty simple to understand why Ursa leaves Zuko for Azula: dragon lizard brain. In the moment a claimed one is in danger, nothing else matters. Azula is in immediate danger, Zuko is in potential danger, a dragon's brain will always focus on immediate danger.

So Ursa's need to protect Azula overrides everything else.

(I'm writing a oneshot about it, it's taking a while because the series so far is mostly in Katara's POV and I never wrote Ursa's POV.)

Yup. I understand that. Like the webcomic, it won't be explicit, it's a more implied thing than anything else (at least as far as I remember, I'm re-reading but I'm only in chapter 3).

It is totally fine. A lot don't like this kind of thing, I don't like this kind of thing when it's written in certain ways (which's why the only omegaverse stories I read are my own). As long as you follow "don't like, don't read" policy and don't harass people over what they write/read, everything is fine. (Because I don't care if it genuinely triggers someone, in the moment this someone harass people over fiction, they're in the wrong.)

I put trigger warnings on everything, so if I write the KS AU, it'll have all the warnings even if people familiar with the original know exactly what's going to happen.

I'm writing Azula's parts of the oneshot, it's quite chaotic. She's in a lot of pain, physical and emotional. She's in denial about how sick she is, even if the Royal physicians are very worried about how suddenly the healthy, young and strong alpha is exhausted all the time. I'm a sucker for "Ursa was a bit better as a parent" AUs, so in this one when Azula hallucinates her, it's more about someone that made her feel safe.

Izumi as Maizula's baby is such a nice concept. The AU I'm thinking does, for my own delight, include cheating because I'm into that kind of trope. (Let's say Zuko not quite happy about it but he knew Mai would eventually leave him for the alpha she has always loved more.)

It can have lots of drama before the little pack has their happy ending. I think part of Azula's redemption + healing arc would involve her eventually understanding that they didn't think they had an option + didn't know it could hurt so much. (Original!Azula herself only realized what was happening in the night before she passed away). With the bond still there, Azula tends to be protective, and a little more forgiving once she sees Ty Lee and Mai do love and need her.

In the KS AU, I'm making Azula much worse than in canon to make it work with the plot, considering how canon!Azula is a jerk but definitely not a psychopath or anything of the sort. I really don't like the way fandom demonizes her, for a few reasons, and it also makes me feel weird for writing AUs where she is, indeed, a monster.

Yes. Here's the thing, I like the parallel of Oh Sangwoo, a straight man, being SA'd by his mother & Azula, a lesbian woman, being SA'd by her mother (+ I think Oh Sangwoo hallucinates her at some point? So that's a good parallel). Like, something that works into this specific character hating women so much they abuse and kill them in horrific ways.

(I don't like it either, which sounds almost like a hypocrite with the way I have multiple OCs that have SA in their backstory and I do write fucked up content. And because I also have read a lot of fics that have it in them – thankfully they do tend to work it so, so well. Like, not as a torture porn kind of thing, but another layer of her character. Azula x Ozai CSA seems to be almost a must for Maizula fics, and I eat it up every time.)

It's a dragon AU and when Azulon asks for Azula's life instead of Zuko's (because she's Ozai's favorite), Ursa kills Azulon + takes Azula out of the palace (and Azula's hatred comes from how they abandon Zuko in the palace). Like, Ursa up until that point gave Zuko lots of attention, but there's a silent agreement between mother and daughter that goes like "this boy is ours" because they're dragons and all of that. Azula died in the Agni Kai when Zuko threw lightning at her, leaving her completely burned.

After the war, Mai returned to the palace to be with Zuko, not knowing that Azula was going to bother everyone there with her presence.

Azula is furious, angry for the others, but she realized that she couldn't possess them or kill them because she didn't have that much power, but...she can play tricks on them, and make them doubt mentally, she's just getting started.

Oh... Wait, Mai can see her? Well, at least he'll have a witness so he can see all the chaos, and maybe he'll finally stop looking like an ass all the time.
