Words below by Kevin: ・・・ KEV x Blacklivematters - -
I was happy and proud of the protestors who came together in Amsterdam, Dam. Black people have been discriminated against for as long as I can remember but I ask you does it also happen in the design world? I read an article that said, In the United States, approximately 86% of professional designers are Caucasian, according to the American Institute of Graphic Arts @aigadesign. This represents only small strides since the 1990 AIGA symposium named “Why Is Graphic Design 93% White?”. And the race is only part of the picture. Diversity in design means diversity of experience, perspective, and creativity and these can be shaped by multiple factors including race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual identity, ability/disability, and location, among others. Another article how “ Typography as a Radical Act in an Industry Ever-dominated by White Men” As a designer living in the Netherlands, I once found myself at a full services agency company looking for employment but to my surprise, there was no diversity, no immigrants. I was the only black person in the building, so of course, I didn’t get the job. I have been job hunting for 2 years applying for some known dutch agencies or companies to which I know dutch but don’t speak it like a native you’re automatically discarded. There could also be a reasonable reason that I wasn’t good enough but I keep asking myself if I was a white dutch native it would have been a different story. I ask you, is creativity really meant for everyone? If so why is it some people found the issues of not getting a job because they’re black, female, immigrants, or are from the different sex? Why is it that being different is a bad thing, isn’t design supposed to be for everyone? - - This is my entry to @goodtype #goodtypetuesday & #goodtypegeorgefloyd ——————————————— ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 https://www.instagram.com/p/CBKGe_YpxZ7/?igshid=11p16y5qp6yod
