i keep seeing this idea that ruikasa shippers exaggerate tsukasa’s importance to rui/erase the importance of rui’s other relationships, which is honestly just an indictment of reading comprehension these days. yes rui has other close relationships and yes tsukasa is special. the story would not make any goddamn sense if tsukasa didn’t somehow represent something special to rui.

if you actually read what the other characters closest to rui (nene, mizuki) have to say, this is pretty obvious and not really up for interpretation.

nene and rui bonded over theater as kids but their paths diverged over time as rui became withdrawn from people in general and nene continued to pursue theater until the stage fright incident. and i think part of that is just their personalities—both of them are pretty avoidant and reserved at the beginning of the main story—so while they have unique insight into each other’s thoughts and feelings, neither is really equipped to push the other in the opposite direction without external help.

their friendship is very important and a big part of how both characters became the people they are in the present! but nene is really the first person to point out that rui is looking for something she doesn’t fully understand, even though they have these shared interests.

later, nene describes tsukasa and rui as being “show maniacs” in a way that’s different from how she loves musicals, or how emu loves shows. wonder halloween is really all about how these 2 are uniquely matched in their fanaticism and the scope of their creative visions. it’s literally impossible for rui to push tsukasa away by being too ambitious with his shows, because tsukasa loves that rui’s ideas are wild and explosive and ambitious. tsukasa gets annoyed when he thinks rui is just fucking around, but if rui is genuinely pitching a show — tsukasa takes it seriously and will go above and beyond to execute it.

similar to nene, mizuki is someone who knows rui well and specifically calls out how she doesn’t totally understand his deal and vice versa. they’re friends that hung out in middle school because they had nobody else, but they’re both also the type of people who prefer bullshitting over being vulnerable around others. mizuki knew in middle school that rui wasn’t talking about how he really felt, and she acknowledges that he needs to find friends that have something else in common besides loneliness, and the same goes for her too.

as characters have pointed out again and again, rui changes after meeting tsukasa in particular. tsukasa is uniquely positioned to both challenge rui and appreciate rui’s creative vision, and that contradicts all these things rui once believed about himself. although rui was able to have friendships with people like nene and mizuki, he’d basically come to the conclusion that nobody could both understand and accept him, and tsukasa shows up and tramples all over that. mostly by accident.

not to make everything about pandemonium. but pandemonium is so momentous for rui… even as he makes friends and finds a place for himself with wxs and at school, rui is not somebody who knows how to be vulnerable or honest about his feelings. he couldn’t bring himself to say that he didn’t want to leave wxs and asahi had to say it for him. he keeps everything so close to his chest, and pandemonium is important because at the very end, rui is laying himself bare. he actually says out loud that tsukasa has changed him for the better and how much it means to him.

like, yes, I get that it’s hard when so many people are being so pushy about one character in particular (or one ship), and it is driving the focus away from other characters who deserve the spotlight too

but also

Rui fans have been dealing with all the controversies and stuff (I’M NOT FUCKING DOWNPLAYING THE CONTROVERSY DON’T FUCKING YELL AT ME FOR IT I’M NOT SAYING THEY SHOULD HAVE KEPT ALL THE THINGS IN THAT GOT REMOVED), and they just want a normal focus event. There hasn’t been one since THE START OF THE GAME.

you know how hard it is to just be a Rui fan who likes the character because I can connect with him in some way, and I enjoy seeing a character that I can see myself in? I just wanna see another focus event for him because I think he’s neat.

what kind of society do we live in where people simply enjoying what they love causes them to get labeled as problematic? I get that some people can get toxic over that, in which case the problem goes both ways, but I don’t want people to hate me for simply liking a fictional character that a lot of others like too.
