Children of Legends
Chapter 2
They got caught.
The stars were shining over the mountains by the time they got back to the Compound. They snuck back in using one of the secret tunnels hidden deep in the place - an emergency exit created if they were ever under attack.
As if that was likely. No evil force had ever attacked the base in all of Fey's life, for almost twenty years.
The good part was that this secret tunnel led right back to her lab. The bad part was that her lab was made mostly out of copper, and it was so big their footsteps echoed loudly. They would have to be sneaky.
Jun placed his feet carefully on the ground, shifting his weight slowly. Fey carefully put one foot in front of the other. Even Auto was flapping his wings slower than usual. They had to be sneaky to evade Duke and Val. Unfortunately, luck was not on their side.
"Eh-hem", Duke's voice called from the exit of the tunnel, making Fey stumble back into Jun. "Just what do you two think you are doing?"
"Uhm... out for a walk?" Fey tried, face squishing into an unsure expression.
Duke looked unimpressed. "Then why do you have the legs you use to root around trash in on?" he pressed.
Fey winced. She knew she was caught. "Okay, fine, we went to the Wastelands. But it was for work!" she said when she saw his mouth open, ready to interrupt. "I needed new parts for Val's gauntlets."
Duke considered this for a moment, then continued chewing them out. "I am the leader, Fey. I decide who goes where and when. You both will be punished for undermining my authority. Now get out here so I can distribute it properly."
Fey groaned. She heard Jun do the same, quieter.
They emerged from the tunnel and looked up to see Duke's glowering face.. And up a little higher was Val's.
Oh boy.
"I told you to rest," Val said sternly. She was breathing hard, an attempt to control her rising anger. "Jun, why did you let her go out?"
Jun stumbled over his words. "I-I didn't let her... she- she dragged me-"
"DRAGGED you, you went willingly-"
"STOP!" Duke yelled. "It doesn't matter who dragged whom. You both snuck out. You both will have training every day for a week," he said, his tone suggesting that there was no room to negotiate.
"This is too good," Mari interjected from the corner of the room where he'd been hiding, a small smirk of amusement on his face.
Fey wondered if today's trip was worth it. Then remembered the shiny red gem and the other goodies she found and decided it was.
"And I'll be confiscating whatever junk you picked up," Duke said, holding his hand out ready to take Fey's bag. "You will get them back when your punishment is over."
Fey mentally cursed out Duke and clutched her backpack tighter.
Duke caught this action. "The bag, Fey," he demanded.
Fey thought about handing it over for a second. Then tried to make a run for it past them. Tried.
Her legs weren't built for running, so she wound up stumbling right into Duke, whose thin arms caught her.
In one swift motion, he swiped the bag from her shoulders and moved to hang it on his own. Fey panicked and tried to pry the pack out of his hands, resulting in a fierce tug-of-war between the two.
"Let-go-of-the-bag", Duke said between gritted teeth. His smooth hands were already slipping.
"No-freakin'-way", Fey replied, her calloused hands steady, her legs shaking. "Jun-help!"
Jun grabbed her shoulders and held her steady, joining in the fight. Auto grabbed onto Jun's hand and tried to help pull, wings flapping wildly. Val joined in as well, gripping onto Duke's arms to help him pull. Mari watched the show from the sidelines, like a cat watches a canary.
A tearing sound filled the air. Once. Twice.
Then the bag exploded.
Metal parts soared, spilling all over the ground. The parts clanked together in the air and tinked when they hit the floor. The glowing gem leaped in the air, hit Duke on the head, and fell by Val's feet.
The gem cracked open like an egg. A fuzzy red glow emerged like the yolk. It flew through the air and disappeared into Val's chest.
Everyone went still.
"WHAT EVEN WAS THAT?" Duke hollered. "I-THAT WAS- WHERE DID YOU GET THAT THING? WHY DID YOU BRING IT BACK HERE?"
"I WAS GOING TO STUDY IT!" Fey yelled back. "I HAD TO FIND OUT WHAT IT DID!"
"WELL YOU GOT YOUR WISH - POSSIBLY AT THE COST OF VAL'S LIFE!"
They all turned their gazes on Val, who looked down at herself, waiting for something to happen.
One second, Val was there. The next, she was nothing but fire.
"MY GODS-"
"AHH-"
"OHHH MY-"
"AGH-"
Duke and Jun stumbled back. Fey fell without her brother's support. Mari toppled over in his chair, his pink amphibious and tail fin ears flicking wildly in distress.
And as soon as it started, it stopped. Val was back, looking exactly like she did before. Not a hair on her head was singed, not a part of her body burned. She didn't even smell of smoke.
Everyone just stared.
Fey climbed back onto her feet and slowly, gently, reached a hand out toward Val. She carefully touched Val's arm.
No reaction.
The only change was that Val's body temperature was slightly warmer than it should've been.
"What was that?" Duke demanded. His eyes shifted around, unable to decide where to land.
"I don't", Val started, face wide with shock, "I don't know. It- it didn't hurt. It should've hurt."
Fey was trembling. "...that was AMAZING!", she finally said, smiling widely. She then fired off a rapid series of questions, unable to stop her curiosity. "How did the glow thing feel when it entered your chest? Can you feel it? How did the fire feel? Where did it start? Can you do it agai-"
"FEY!", Duke roared. "This is NOT the time! As leader, I must check in with Val and ensure she's alright. He gave Val a concerned look. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah, fine", Val said, almost as a sigh, putting a hand on the back of her head. "Thanks, leader", she forced out. "And for your information, Fey, I don't feel any different. Just a bit warm."
"I'm sorry," Mari piped up from the corner, where he'd mostly been forgotten. "Are we not going to address the fact that one of our members was literally on fire a few seconds ago?" He turned toward Jun. "Shouldn't the medic do something?" he asked pointedly, raising an eyebrow.
Jun blinked, snapped out of his stupor. "Ye-yes! Yes, of course. I'll go get my med-kit." He scurried past everyone and went up the elevator to the next floor medbay while Fey picked up the remains of the crystal. Auto followed him.
It was a dull red now. A giant crack scarred the middle of its surface. It felt like all the life in it had been hollowed out and somehow seeped into Val.
She scrutinized the cut of the gem, inspecting it like a surgeon inspects an open-heart surgery. The careful lines and ridges of the gem reminded her of someone's handiwork. But it couldn't be....
She shook her head and looked harder. The cut was a complicated one, only created by long-experienced craftsmen. Now that she looked at it closer, she realized the cut was a familiar one.
Her eyes widened, mouth opening in disbelief.
"...My dad made this," she finally said.

Children of Legends
Fey was on the ceiling. Again.
Situated on the topmost curve of the dome-shaped roof, held in place by four metal spider-like appendages protruding from her backpack, Fey frantically scribbled equation after equation onto draft paper. Her dark brown arms and face were covered in white chalk, some of it even getting into her curly black hair. Her next new invention was on its way, each number bringing it closer to life. The frenzied scratch of chalk on metal and the scrape of metal on metal as the appendages moved with her was almost enough to cover the sound of knocking on her door.
BANG BANG BANG
Fey looked up (or down) to see her brother standing in the doorway. He was breathing hard, his curly brown hair sticking up in random places, and his light brown skin was sweat-slicked. He looked so small from her position, his stout body taking up only a quarter of the doorframe, but Fey knew that he was almost as tall as her. Almost.
"You missed training again", he said. It was less of a reprimand and more of a passing comment. The reprimands would come from Val later.
"I'm on the verge of a major breakthrough, Jun."
"Val's not gonna accept that excuse again, you know."
"Shut up."
Fey sighed and decided she might as well face the music. She pushed off the ceiling using her arms and fell. Her spider-limbs caught her before she could go splat. She sat in her plush wheelchair and retracted her limbs back into her backpack.
“You need to take this training stuff more seriously," Jun said, walking out of the lab alongside her. "I mean we're-"
"The new heroes of the world, I know, I know", Fey finished for him. "Why can't I save the world my own way? Like, with giant robots?"
"'Cause that's not how our parents did it," Jun replied.
They reached the elevator to the underground lab and took it up the training area above ground. The circular arena showed signs that it was worse for wear - slashes from knives littered the walls and floor, a few craters were left in the ground, and the training dummies were reduced to mutilated dolls. Standing in the center was Val, her tanned arms crossed over her chest and her bright red hair disheveled in its ponytail. Her sharp features were pulled into a scowl so deep that Fey thought her face might collapse in on itself.
"You can't keep doing this," Val said, glaring at Fey. "You can't keep skipping out on training!"
"I have projects to work on, Val!" Fey said. She needed to win this argument, or the lecture would go on until sunset.
"You can work on your projects after training is over," Val retorted. "For three days each week, you train! Then you can work on whatever you want."
"Well, I..." Fey scrambled for words, "I don't see Mari or Duke here either! Why can they-"
"Adamaris and Duke are coming back from a mission! They've been gone for the past two days!" Val exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air in frustration. "You've been holed up in your lab for two days straight? When's the last time you've eaten? Drank?"
Fey inspected a particularly deep gash in the floor. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Jun looking like he wanted to melt into it.
Val put a hand on the back of her head. "Go eat, Fey. Eat, drink, shower. Do not miss out on training again. Do you understand me?"
Fey nodded and wheeled her chair around back into the Compound.
"So...," Jun started as he followed after her. "You gonna wash up then?"
"Nope," Fey responded. "We're going on a trip to the Wastelands." She looked down at the stumps that stopped where her knees should've been.
"Just let me get my scavenging legs. And Auto."
……………………………….
The Wastelands were anything but filled with waste. So many spare parts for Fey to gather up and make something new out of - wires that had yet to weather away, slightly rusted gears that could be brand new with a little work, whole cars and engines and exhaust systems and suspension rigs and, so, so much more.
Fey was a whirlwind, crawling through old metal beams and in and out of different vehicles. Snapping of wires from here, taking gears from there, and shoving them into her backpack. The legs she wore were created from the parts she had found here and were especially designed to have the right amount of dexterity and flexibility to keep up with her movements without getting stuck anywhere.
Auto, a small mechanical dragon with sharp teeth, a pointed tail, four claws, and delicate gold wings, flew by her side, pointing out more and more parts that seemed ripe for the taking.
"Are you sure we should be out here this late?" Jun asked from his spot below her in the sands of the Wastelands. "Especially after what Val said?"
"It's fine!" Fey called to her brother while she inspected a rusted piece of an old alternator. "We'll be back before she even notices. I just need one more gear! I'm making her new gauntlets anyway, she'll appreciate all the work I'm doing for her!"
She tossed the materials she didn't need onto other huge junk piles, digging for that last gear, when Auto suddenly stopped flying and perched on her shoulder. He stared straight into the hole Fey had dug, unmoving.
"What's up?", Fey asked aloud, then remembered Auto couldn't hear. "Is something wrong?" she asked in Morse code, tapping on her shoulder so Auto could feel the vibrations.
Auto continued to stare.
Fey finally turned her gaze to where Auto was looking and saw something... glowing?
"Score!", Fey exclaimed. "A working tail light? This is gonna look so cool on my mecha suit!"
"I thought you were making gauntlets!" Jun said.
"Same difference!", Fey yelled back.
Fey shoved the other parts aside and scrambled for the glowing light she saw, whooping when she saw her hand clasp around it. She pulled it out and opened her palm to see - a gem?
The bright red gem was cut in the shape of a pear, slightly larger than Fey's thumb. The gem started to pulse with life in her hand. Auto couldn't take his eyes off the gem.
Fey felt confused. She climbed down from the junk pile and showed the gem to Jun.]
"How did a jewel end up in a place like this?" Jun asked.
"Hey!", Fey cried. "This place is full of goodies, it's not that strange!"
“But everything you find is always broken. And you haven't found anything like this before." Jun retorted.
"Ugh, fine, it is weird". Fey conceded. "Why is it pulsing? Is it gonna explode?"
"I don't know but I think we should leave it. It looks dangerous." Jun said. "Plus Duke wouldn't like anything strange like this."
Fey was taken aback. "Are you kidding?" she asked, not believing what Jun was suggesting. "I have to figure out what this thing does! We're taking it back to the Compound, Duke be damned."
"But..." Jun started. "Duke's the leader. He gets final say."
"Not if he never finds out about it." Fey said, smiling mischievously. She shoved the crystal deep into her backpack and piled more spare parts on top of it until she couldn't see the glow anymore. "Now let's get back before we're caught."
