This could have happened to me if I had screwed up while explaining myself when the school found my gore drawings. But the [probably vice principal or something, i don't remember who exactly it was] who talked to me seemed pretty reasonable, it basically boiled down to

"Why did you draw this?"

"I wanted to see what the most violent thing I could come up with was, I think that's interesting"

"Is there anyone or anything you're angry at?"

"Nope"

I'm so fucking tired of listening to people carve exemptions for parental privilege out of every single principle they express. "sure it's reasonable for parents to want a say in what books their kids check out of the library, but they shouldn't be able to control what others—" NO! FUCKING NO!! THAT IS NOT REASONABLE ACTUALLY! and the kids whose parents are most invested in having that control are exactly the kids who most need to be able to access those books

positive take on: “western” animation vs. anime? And vice versa?

Oh sure - western animation has put in so much work into developing "comedy or edginess as design" in ways that have really pushed the envelope. We live in this world so we sleep on it, but actually imagine showing someone from the 1930's like Courage the Cowardly Dog or Powerpuff Girls or (for a different angle here) Fritz the Cat. I think they would struggle a bit to relate to the level of "distance" those designs have from anything resembling reality. But under the umbrella of "animation is for the oddball shows" we kept pushing audiences along and we don't even question now that you can make something like Invader Zim and we will not only be like "yeah those are people" but they are a specific kind of person as communicated by bodily proportions, line width, etc. Its a very fun space for aesthetic-cultural expression.

I talk about anime a ton so maybe, hm, in the same vein as above - I don't think any artistic movement has ever so effectively married specific stylistic elements with trope concepts. Anytime you see western groups try to make "anime style" shows, it tends to fail, for a bunch of reasons but mainly because they try telling western stories in that style, without the anime tropes, and that sits wrongly with audiences. Part of this strength comes from the "superstimulus" aspects - I do think anime designs are, for the right kind of brain, as a local maximum of appealing, and they are built in a way that compliments the tropes of the genre itself. That strength-of-design was the foundation for building a far more coherent media language. Like, Disney did this, because it had its own coherent style. Anime did that across hundreds of different studios.

I would still use my turn signals in the Mad Max Wasteland. They'd call me "Signal" because I'd hit my blinker before ramming the enemy hot rods into the side of a desert ravine. I'd use my turn signal every time. They would respect me for this.

Like, a normal person would expect an organized community project to transcribe things for the blind without causing more problems, not this garbage

I hate people who post image descriptions (and people who reblog them). They are always excruciatingly verbose and take up a lot of visual space. Put em in the alt text where they can be useful while not wasting my time.

Reposting an alt text that's already where it should be has no value beyond virtue signaling. If you do this you are my enemy.

Increasingly of the opinion that all those people on here going 'the design and portrayal of women in manga and anime is always misogynistic/cringe-inducingly fanservice-ey/just significantly more sexist than comparable American works' should be forced to read a couple years of big two superhero comics.
