The cherry blossom season in Japan attracts many visitors, the fascination of dressing in traditional attire and visiting the ancient temples is a popular attraction. The dress is tightly harnessed at the abdomen, making it relatively difficult to walk for the first-timers. I enjoyed the humour and happiness watching these moments. 8/8: Silk Weavers of Mandanpura. Varanasi, India February 2019. Hidden inside the dark narrow alleys of Mandanpura in Varanasi, resides a community of Muslim silk weavers locally known as the ‘Ansari Community’. The handmade Benarasi saris and the golden brocade work (Zari) is a surviving craft inherited by the Ansaris over generations. On a recent trip to Varanasi, I photographed this vanishing cottage industry that is today challenged by mechanised mass-production of saris (traditional Indian attire worn by women) and cheaper synthetic alternatives to silk. 4/8: Silk Weavers of Mandanpura. Varanasi, India February 2019. The craft of silk weaving has percolated in households of the ‘Ansari’ community by generations of inheritance. In a typical household, the men are responsible for the production of textile, while the women assist in ancillary jobs and raise the family. Children start assisting their families at a very young age.
