Makona would make for an amazing orphaner. Could probably rise really high in terms of prestige too with how good at monster hunting she is.

Unfortunately for the fleet, she can't stand them, the system they enforce, or high blood society.

She does hunt large creatures in her spare time, but she always utilizes the parts and meat as much as possible. Whatever she doesn't utilize herself, she sells or feeds to her own lussus.

She's probably clashed with an orphaner now and then over wild lussi that she's hunted. (ones without charges. She doesn't hunt lussi with kids. troll or otherwise.) Depending on their vibe (like, on a scale of desperate kid out of his depth, to raging prick) She'll either let them take it, tell them to fuck off, or make them fight for it.

Most commonly, she'll take a mercenary contracts to hunt an aggressive or rampaging wild lussus in rural or low population dense areas where they've proven to be an issue.

Not uncommon for vindictive troll orphans to put a bounty on orphaner's head (which she's taken on occasion.)

Headcanons about orphaners

Becoming an orphaner is an alternative to fleet conscription since it's an incredibly important job

Although anyone can apply, the position is primarily composed of trolls cobalt and up due to highblood privilege

The application process for becoming an orphaner involves a written exam and field testing.

Once you're in, there's no going back. The only way out is to join the fleet proper. Anyone caught trying to abandon their duties gets culled for desertion

Most orphaners work on their own, but for particularly large or dangerous lusii, they may be assigned to a team or a partner

New orphaners are given a mentor for their first sweep, sometimes longer or shorter depending on their ineptitude

The majority of the time, orphaners have to find large enough lusii on their own, but they also occasionally are tasked with targeting a specific lusus if it catches the eyes of the higher-ups

Orphaners have to kill at least three lusii per month. Consistent failure to meet quota for six months will result in culling for abandonment/neglect of duties

However, if they have a good enough reputation or high standing, they can be transferred to the fleet instead of being culled

Enemies to lovers except they're in a book club and always disagreeing on like every point. Themes, character arcs, what the writer's intentions were, if that plot hole really was a plot hole and if it even matters.

It's not exactly arguing but it couldn't be called respectfully disagreeing either.

Everyone else in the book club has learned to just enjoy the conversational battles between them, side eyeing each other while eating their little book club snacks.
