On Nightborne: Language

Shalassian, like Thalassian and even modern day Darnassian, is an offshoot of the ancient elven language spoken by the Kaldorei before the War of the Ancients [Twitter: Don Adams, Ibid]. It is unclear how mutually intelligible the different elven dialects are, as they all evolved separately over ten thousand years, but there are some words and phrases that overlap between the languages [Warcraft Encyclopedia: Darnassian, Thalassian].

Regardless of any similarities between Darnassian and Thalassian, it’s clear that Shalassian is very different from its predecessor, since the language used in old Nightborne texts is so archaic that only the oldest elves can understand it [Item: Ancient Nightborne Tome]. However, some Nightborne artificers appear to be able to understand ancient Highborne (which may or may not be the same language that the Ancient Nightborne Tome is written in), since the memory cores of the security sentries they engineer contain information processed in a dialect of ancient Highborne [Quest: Chicken Scratch, Quest: Secrets of Leysmithing, Quest: Methods of the Nightfallen].
