to be clear, im only bangin on about the microsoft boycott as much as i am bc this is primarily an elder scrolls-themed blog with mostly elder scrolls fans as followers. i don't think that boycotting the Oblivion remaster should be the be-all and end-all of your pro-palestinian activism.

however. i do think it is, in many ways, the bare minimum for TES fans such as myself and my mutuals/followers. boycotting is a non-action. you don't even have to DO anything. for a lot of us, who may be required to use Microsoft products for our jobs or studies, avoiding the company entirely isn't an option. but refraining from purchasing a remaster (!) of a game that already exists is actually really super duper easy and in fact the one thing that BDS is asking of you at all - to abstain, insofar as it is in your control to do so, from giving Microsoft any more of your money. that's kind of how boycotts work.

i understand that a lot of TES accounts on here may not have heard of the boycott yet, or they may not have connected Microsoft to Bethesda. but i think some of you are being wilfully ignorant. i don't want to talk about the remaster, hear about it, or engage with it in any way whatsoever. and while i don't personally think it's necessary to withdraw from the fandom altogether - i won't be, and im not expecting others to - i have no interest in interacting with anyone who purchases this game with full knowledge of the boycott. there is no excuse on this earth for crossing that line. so if you buy the game, talk about it, and then find yourself blocked? that's why.

omg highkey need to know the lore between Robin and Mercer………. (#1 Mercer fan here i LOVE hcs involving him 😭)

OHH i'm so excited to answer this one! fair warning, as Robin and Mercer's story consist of some Not Fun themes. TW for non-sexual grooming and abuse.

Robin was only 19 when he joined the Thieves Guild, previously engaging in arguably necessary thievery throughout Riften as a teen. he was a homeless orphan with no other options in terms of survival, and Brynjolf took notice of this VERY early on. while he'd let Mercer in on a stray khajiit who had quite the knack for stealing, Mercer paid it no mind. that was until Robin eventually joined the guild, and Mercer realized that this kid was very good at what he did.

Mercer clocked Robin's immense skill, as well as his intuition and attention to detail, as a threat. not only a threat to his position, but a threat to his plans to betray the guild.

Robin was too smart. he paid too much attention.

Mercer decided to take advantage of those traits before Robin could pick up on his schemes, and use the khajiit's own potential strengths against him. Robin was a skittish and obviously troubled teen - an easy target to help Mercer's plan go as intended. only if he played him right.

Mercer took note of Robin's need for validation and started there; he'd make Robin practically beg for any sort of praise (which Robin was obviously yearning for), constantly egging him on with the fact that he could "do better, does he know skilled everyone else is around him? does he know what Mercer's even capable of?"

he'd often only refer to Robin as the local "stray." it was a constant sisyphus-esc battle for approval. Robin's insecurity of his own skills, despite his immense efficiency, was the key to convincing him that he was nothing without the guild. he was nothing without Mercer.

in Robin's lowest moments after being verbally beat down for hours, or even days, Mercer would proceed to praise him - claiming Robin is what the guild's always needed, saying how proud he was of Robin. how Mercer knew deep down that he was capable. Robin's name was only used in these instances of lovebombing. he would only be addressed directly if he'd done something "right."

Mercer used this tactic to breed an intense fear in Robin, both in fear of Mercer, but also in fear of not having his approval. at this point, 19 y/o Robin was trapped with someone he originally saw as a potential father figure. he'd never had parents, what does he know about differentiating "right" and "wrong" relationships?

with that said, i think their relationship turned into a very uncomfortable grooming situation; lots of love-bombing, gaslighting and manipulation were used to better control Robin, and take any sights of Mercer's true intentions out of view.

some other notes about them:

Robin doesn't remember his parents, but he was extremely close to his father before he passed. it's a big reason as to why Robin subconsciously latched onto Mercer.

both Robin and Mercer had a very similar background growing up, in terms of dealing with neglect - they each just went in opposite directions in terms of how they processed it (huge BPD to NPD parallels here! they're both Cluster B Bitches in my mind).

Mercer actually grew up wealthy, but got his own personal value by using others as stepping stones to get where he needed to be. he got validation from using others, whereas Robin gets validation from being used.

Mercer is a big reason Robin refuses to touch alcohol. there were many instances where he'd get drunk, and the "familial" bond the two shared would cross into... uncomfortable territory. a lot of Mercer's pent up emotions would come out, Robin being the victim of emotionally charged rambles about Mercer's troubles. Robin was put into the position of being responsible for Mercer's well-being and emotional outbursts during these moments.

i think Mercer saw a lot of his younger self in Robin, which is why he both targeted him and resented him.

Mercer is such an abusive, fucked up guy in my eyes and i love exploring it AHJBFVTRJKNBKG. not for Robin's sake, though. :,)
