The titular Hen stands beside a cast iron stove, stirring a pot of soup. Two more pots, and a tin kettle, bubble and steam. While the Hen cooks, her chicks carry in ears of corn, piling them up in the corner of the kitchen.

The Hen pulls a tray of corn muffins out of the oven, plucking a straw from a broom to test them for doneness.

From the same oven, she produces a tray of cornbread; and slices out a square.

Ears of cooked corn are removed from boiling water, and dolloped with butter.

Finally, the Wise Little Hen and her chicks reward themselves for their hard work: sitting down together at a table covered with a checkerboard cloth, and piled high with all manner of corn-based dishes.
