I wish I could just airdrop all of the mechanisms lore into my brain bc I feel like I'm missing so much and beyond reading what's on their website idk where to find anything--

imo its because they live in the aurora and cannot escape when things get frisky

So as far as I can tell most of the mechs have the same response to Nastya talking about the Aurora being her girlfriend, which is just "ew" and moving on.

I'm currently torn between two head canons for why:

The first, and possibly more likely, being that the idea of being in a proper romantic relationship is in general gross to them.

The second, and arguably more self indulgent option, being that Nastya is basically like a big sister to all of them and one simply DOES NOT want to know about their big sister's sex life, thank you very much!

For obvious reasons I prefer the second option, but I'm curious about other people's thoughts on the matter.

My personal mechanisms headcannon is that in Alice, the general and the majors were all very much, painfully aware of the war and the nonsensical nature of it and are doing their best to drive everyone in a different direction.

Any solider that goes to the major with the same claims as Alice, or talking about how long are we going to keep fighting, who are we even fighting, etc is directed towards the majors

The majors who use their “tea” to keep a perpetual ceasefire where they’ll fight tomorrow, but tomorrow never comes

And they hope, just hope, that the war eventually ends without further bloodshed or that at the very least, the soldiers under their command will remain eternally unaware, maybe die of old age before ever having to step back out onto the battlefield again.

They know there’s nothing to this was except senseless violence, they know there’s no way to convince the queen or her court to end the war. The general cannot do so without being accused of treason. So instead they watch for the soldiers that come to their senses, hoping to find a way out, which the general offers, and is gladly taken. “Eat me and drink me are orders so sweetly obeyed” maybe whatever they give them is to keep them out of their heads for whatever horrors they have to fight through to get to Hatter and Hare’s little haven.

“This world is a wonderland once you can understand death” I choose to believe this is about the general hoping all the mindless soldiers die out while they manage to preserve and protect the soldiers who finally came out of it.

And of course, Hatter and Hare do their parts, making sure everyone stays in this eternal ceasefire, never leaving, never tempted to go back, just enjoying their lives until the war dies or they do. They can’t outwardly say they refuse to fight, so they just hide it in pretty language. “Our entrenchment entrenched till more orders emerge, while wars borders diverge here we stay! / With war plans in pieces- and peace talks disbarred! We’re on the brink, just not tonight” like yeah we’re going to fight of course, we just don’t know when :( or where :( how sad. Oh well. Until we have clear orders ig. Except of course, there’s never going to be clear orders.

Gotta talk about this in post too because AGHHHGG

High Noon Over Camelot is undoubtably my favorite storyalbum from the mechs. It took me a while to realise why, but I think it's because it reminds me of all the bedtime stories I used to be read as a child. The narration in this album might be my favorite aspect of it, because it reminds me of the czech folktales I grew up with, which almost always ended in some bittersweet tragedy, or had such aspects in their tales. And I always loved it. I cant remember a lot, if anything from my childhood, but I do remember stories very vividly. Hnoc gives me a similar feeling, so it ends up feeling comforting and like home to me.

I remember listening to it for the first time (after having finished ttbt and udad a few weeks prior) in the evening lying in bed and being completely enamoured by the love of storytelling that this album conveyed. The narration really made it feel like I wasnt alone and someone was telling me about all these tragic figures just trying their best and trying to do what's right. Man, the theme itself is very personal to me too!

And all the other albums are wonderful! But this one is sort of delivered on a more eye to eye level? The songs are also some of my favorites, they are less epic, yes, or might be less stimulating, but by god are they heart wrenchingly beautiful.

Idk idk I just love this album so much I love the story so much, it makes me cry everytime I listen to it.

It reminds me of how much I love and need stories in my life

My take on Raph's Backstory

-Grew up in a small village

-Was the quiet wild child, always curious,

-growing up, other kids thought she was weird, always ignored her- never made fun of her to her face but did talk behind her back

-Spent most of her time exploring and learning about the natural world, didn't have any close friends

-longed for a higher education, even though her family could never afford it she taught herself as much as she could get her hands on

-Got into a high end collage in the city with full scholarships due to her intelligence at a very young age (like 14)

-Goes to school, graduates top of her class

-Becomes renowned in her field, but known as a bit of an eccentric, preforms odd and sometimes slightly controversial studies.

-notices how rigged the system is, healthcare prioritizing the rich and studies being biased towards corporate goals, education kept from the lower classes to keep them from rising in their status.

-Begins to lobby for better education opportunities, better healthcare, and less academic bias.

-multiple slander campaigns against her

-her peers shun her, people once neutral towards her denounce her, and the few people who might agree with her stay quiet in order to keep their funding

-realises that to get anywhere, she would have to undermine the whole system. Im not sure on the details but her science becomes more and more unethical as she gets desperate for a way to change things

-Her sketchy experiments become found out and are all over the press

-put on public trial and sentenced to wing clipping (the worst punishment her society can deem other than death)

-escapes after her wings are taken, killing multiple people in the process.

-gets shot on her way out, and that + her wing wounds bring her to the brink of death

-Manages to drag herself into her lab, and mechanises herself just in time

-Goes on a revenge spree with newfound immortality, kidnapping those who wronged her, preforming gruesome experiments on them and leaking the footage to spread fear.

-eventually gets tired of living rage and sadness

-leaves her planet to find a new start and expand her studies

-finds the happiness and freedom she has always longed for

-eventually finds a mechanism concert, and tricks her way on board, finally finding people who dont shun her, people as horrible as she is.
