This gets at what I love about Art. Not “art”, a theoretical collection of things we should recognize as great simply because everyone else does, but the works of artists in media that range from mundane to extravagant. The entirely human expression of what it is to live, and the equally human response of identifying with the lives of others.
This is the work of a person who is not looking to “elevate” the food he reviews as some have suggested. This is the prose of a man who has devoted himself to expressing the exceptional qualities of “common” food. A mundane artist sees mundane artists. I have so much love for him and those who make the food he reviewed❤️
One of my greatest inspirations as a writer is the late great LA Times food reviewer Jonathan Gold. I legitimately think he should be considered one of the best writers of the last 100 years. Look at this.
Poetry. Non-fiction par excellence. This is a man who not only understood the visceral, the sensory, the sublime, but he could put it into words.
