(Deltarune spoilers and a pretty long post ahead)

Ok, so TP in Deltarune seems to have some sort of relationship with light. In chapter 4, a new mechanic is introduced where in certain battles, TP gain is reduced. The thing about these battles is that they all seem to have some sort of relationship to darkness.

In the Jackenstein battle (sort of foreshadowing for the titan battles btw), it is literally set in darkness. Same thing with the Gerson statue battle. With the titan battles, they aren't set in complete darkness, but the titans are literal spawns of darkness, and the titan spawn appear to be entirely composed of darkness (same thing with the Roaring Knight but we aren't talking about that right now).

This is further supported by the opening text box for these battles. Something like "Darkness constricts you! TP gain reduced outside of [ ]." This very clearly ties darkness to a reduced TP gain, which means that TP might somehow be gained through light.

The other thing all of these battles have in common is that in all of them, to end or progress the fight, you have to save up enough TP to be able to somehow "banish" the enemy with light (note: "banish" I'm pretty sure is only used in the titan spawn fight, but it's easier to just use one word). With Jack, you have to save up enough TP to "unleash" your light and trigger the "YOUR TOO BRIGHT" attack, where you need to sort of shrink the pumpkin with your light in order to gain mercy. In the titan battles, you need to save up enough TP to banish the titan spawn, or unleash your light onto the titan to break down its shield. With the Gerson statue fight, it's not totally the same, but light is still used to illuminate the statue (using Susie's healing ability). You could still say that the light is banishing the statue, since statues shouldn't be able to attack you in the first place.

TP in most of these battles is gained through little yellow specks. In the titan battles, you have to use your light to banish the darkness in the battle box and turn it into the yellow TP specks. The thing about these specks is that they glow (sort of). In the Jack fight, they are the only thing you can see outside of your sphere of light and the light from the key. This indicates that TP seems to literally BE light, and when you gather enough light, you are able to unleash it on certain enemies to progress the battle.

I already said this but I can't figure out how to transition into my next point so

Reduced TP gain seems to be tied to darkness. If the battle is set in a dark setting, it is a lot harder to gather TP, which could be because TP is a form of light. If the enemies are basically the EMBODIMENT OF DARKNESS, grazing them isn't going to get you much TP because you are just getting close to darkness, which reduces TP gain.

Half baked conclusion:

TP seems to literally be light in some way. If you reduce the light, you reduce the TP gain. For these battles, you have to use the LIGHT INSIDE YOUR SOUL (that's still shining in the cold) to banish the darkness (or in the statue battle, Susie's light). If the battle is SET in darkness, you need to gather the little bit of light that's still there. If the enemies are the EMBODIMENT OF DARKNESS, you need to use your light to banish their dark attacks and turn them into light (not sure how that one works tbh).

I have no idea what this could actually mean, or if it's even true (I mean, TP means tension points, we all already know that). How would getting close to bullets normally give you light? It seems like with defending, you are, in a way, bathing yourself in shadow (putting a shield up, putting your arms up, literally covering yourself in a scarf). Maybe I'm just overthinking it (probably), but I'd love to hear what everyone thinks of this, and if anyone has anything to add (or subtract) from this post. I wouldn't call it a theory, I've just been thinking about what TP could possibly be outside of a game mechanic (yes I know it means tension points we've already gone over this but what about all the darkness stuff?)

I finally finished and WOW that was amazing. Only took me five hours today of nonstop reading to get here (plus all the other days I was reading it). I still really wish I'd discovered it sooner though. Anyways, now all I have to do is wait for more Defragmentation!
