I think all of this is true. And I'd like to add that as an indie animator, I find that emulating the "imperfections" of older mediums can also be a sort of protest/helpful solution against the increasingly absurd and resource-heavy standards of "perfection" that cutting-edge creative industries demand. I could spend another 30 hours making sure my 3D model is photorealistic and flawless in construction for the sake of appealing to modern professional standards. Oorr I could say FUCK THAT bc it's not relevant to my artistic expression and embrace the flaws with an intentional appeal to an older, "messier" aesthetic that I still love and find beauty in like a VHS tape or PSX-style pixellation

I firmly believe it shouldn't be embarrassing for you to have your real life be bettered by fiction. I think it's one of the best things about fiction and the mark of truly great art. Fun for fun's sake is also valuable, but part of the point of fiction is exploring ideas and perspectives that you are not naturally encountering in your normal daily life. If you have a healthy fiction diet you'll go to more imaginary places than you can ever afford to travel and peer deeper into more characters' souls and minds than you ever could with most real people, and if the art is good and you're paying attention then OF COURSE you're gonna learn something from all of that!

i dont agree with a lot of the posturing against people who only watch kid's cartoons because it feels mean-spirited. like if you want to do that it's cool and i don't think you're committing some moral or intellectual sin--but it is very silly when people who do this forget that they're watching cartoons for children, not in a 'you can't expect children's media to be good' way or even a 'the politics of children's media aren't worth analyzing way' but in a 'you have to be realistic about genre expectations' way. because that's how you end up with arguments over whether steven universe should have killed people or not

Playing The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog without having any context for who the characters are is such an emotional rollercoaster. 90% of my Sonic knowledge came from cultural osmosis and an anime I watched as a child, and now I'm being introduced to these characters at a birthday party and they're all insane. The lizard is a ninja who can read my mind, the cat is a princess from another dimension, and the bat just tried to rob me.

I dreamed that I was playing mariokart and there was a track that took 3 days to complete and when I somehow managed to get 1st place a popup came onscreen that had a pic of koopa troopa and text that read “congratulations!! you’re gonna have so much sex” and I started laughing so hard I woke up
