🐀 Rats in Appledore?!
Homes on Pitt Lane and Wooda Road are under siege after Baker Estates started construction nearby. Residents report first-ever infestations, with pest control bills soaring and unfinished, unsold homes piling up. Now they want to build 36 more houses — in a known wildlife habitat.
📢 Locals are urging action: 💥 Rat nests disturbed 💥 Wildlife displaced 💥 Alternative site refused by Baker Estates 💥 Unsold homes already sitting empty
👉 Objections now open via the Planning Inspectorate 📝 Ref: APP/W1145/W/25/3359853 🔗 https://acp.planninginspectorate.gov.uk

Badger Watch: Nightlife Around Appledore 🦡🌙
We’ve been lucky enough to catch some of our elusive local residents on trail camera – badgers, busy in the hedgerows and lanes around Appledore.
These shy creatures emerge after dusk, following well-worn paths between the fields and woodland edges. Watching them move with such purpose and grace is a quiet reminder of the rich wildlife that still thrives just beyond our doorsteps.
📍 Filmed in and around Appledore 📷 Captured on a motion-activated trail camera 🦡 Look out for snuffling, foraging, and the occasional pause to scratch!
We’ll be sharing more moments like these, part of an ongoing project to gently document the unseen rhythms of the land – without disturbance, and always with care.
Follow for more glimpses of North Devon’s hidden life.

🌿 Badger Runs & Dandelions at Dusk – Above Appledore Shipyard 🌅
youtube
There’s a quiet kind of magic that settles over Appledore as the sun begins to dip—when the shipyard below falls into silhouette and the fields above begin to glow with the last of the day’s light.
This walk takes you through a series of gently sloping meadows on the edge of the village—fields long shaped by wildlife and wind. Dandelions sway in the breeze, their seeds ready to drift, and just beneath the surface, a hidden network of badger runs and setts hums with life.
The badgers themselves stay mostly out of sight during the day, but their pathways are clear for those who know where to look. Trampled grass, well-worn trails, and small earth openings hint at a long-established presence. These animals have likely lived here for generations, just above the bustle of the shipyard below.
This video isn’t about spectacle—it’s about stillness. It’s a chance to see a familiar place in a new light, to listen to birdsong on the wind, and to let the land speak for itself.
If you love Appledore, and the quiet ways nature surrounds it, I think you’ll enjoy this.

🎧 Our First Walk: Wooda Road to Limers Lane
youtube
We’ve launched. The Appeldore Channel is now live, and this is our first offering — a no-talking, ambient ASMR walk through a stretch of North Devon that rarely gets seen like this.
Starting at Wooda Road, we follow Bidna Lane into the woods, brushing the edge of the estuary, and ending at the curve of Limers Lane — a route full of light, quiet, and texture.
It’s 33 minutes long. No music. No narration. Just the sound of the land as it is.
🎥 Watch on YouTube → https://youtu.be/qJZ0ESXsXKk
Follow for more walks — through rain, dusk, tide and trees. We’ll be wandering slowly from here on.

🌬️ Let’s Bring Back the Windmill
Tumblr media
A quiet call to remember what once stood watching.
On the ridge between Appledore and Northam, in a field kissed by salt air and wind, a windmill once stood.
Not a ruin. Not a monument. But a working part of life — turning grain into flour, wind into purpose.
They called it the Northam Windmill or sometimes the Bidna Mill, after the nearby rise. It stood tall above the estuary, where the river narrows and the sea begins to think of home.
Its sails stopped long ago. In 1922, the last of its stones were taken down — some say for safety, others say for usefulness. Some of those stones now hold back the tide near Watertown Farm, quietly continuing their work in a different form.
But here’s a thought. What if we brought it back?
Not just the building, but the idea. The presence. The pride. The reminder.
A place to walk to, to learn from, to stand beside and look out over the rooftops of Appledore, the curve of the river, the burrows and beyond.
We’re not starting a campaign just yet — not officially. But we’re asking the question. And questions, when asked kindly and clearly, have a way of gathering answers.
If you know stories, memories, old photographs, or even feelings — we’d love to hear them.
Because sometimes, the wind turns back toward us. And sometimes, it carries the shape of things we’d forgotten we missed.

Appledore residents Association are proposing that Quiet Lanes be designated in the area to regain the character and tranquillity of our country lanes.
The ARA are focussing on Pitt Lane and Pitt Hill initially, shown here.
As they are for use and enjoyment by us all, your views on Quiet Lanes and whether they are a good idea are essential.
Please tell us what you think, by taking a few minutes to fill in the Quiet Lanes Survey. ( Link: https://buff.ly/2Q1dAa8 )
We can then consider and analyse all your views to see if there is enough local support for a Quiet Lanes network.
We will be passing on our analysis of the responses received to Devon County Council, who would be responsible for developing the Quiet Lanes project in partnership with the community.
Do you remember the days when you could take a leisurely stroll down a country lane, taking in verge-side views and enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the countryside?
Nowadays, country lanes are not as quiet, pleasant or safe as they used to be as increasing levels of traffic, speeding vehicles, and heavy lorries are making many intimidating for other users.
Unfortunately, time doesn't stand still, we are seeing our quiet streets and the lanes of Appledore becoming busier and busier, and the situation won't get any better with the proposed Wooda Road/Pitt Lane housing developments.
More about Quiet Lanes here from CPRE, the countryside charity, formerly known as the Campaign to Protect Rural England: https://www.cpre.org.uk/resources/cpr...
