Sara W has recently released a new single titled “Injustice,” featuring Trevor Laake.

It is the perfect way to build up to the conclusion of the track, which ends powerfully with the phrase “This Injustice.” Not only is this a nod to the actual title, but it is also the very first word sung in the track! What a fantastic way to bring the song full circle.

Overall, the production of the song is excellent. It makes for a lush, dreamy vibe, weaving intricate layers of instrumentation. Sara W’s vocals are deeply expressive, adding a theatrical flair to the song. Her dynamic delivery draws listeners into the narrative, making them feel like they’re experiencing a captivating stage performance. She obviously has a lot of vocal control and power, and she knows how to use her singing as a way to truly build the intensity of the song on an emotional level. Speaking of which, the lyrics of “Injustice” explore themes of struggle, resilience, and overcoming challenges both on a personal level and in relation to the tension we’re experiencing in the world right now. We’re living in an era of unprecedented uncertainty and anxiety for the future, and every single time we read a headline or turn on the news, it seems that imminent doom might be upon us. 1. Can you share the inspiration behind “Injustice” and how the song came to fruition?

I was inspired by the Sanda Dia case in Belgium. Sanda died during a hazing ritual caused by an elite fraternity. Their sentence was a joke and left me stunned. It was an example of how the system and the court here really works. A lot of people were angry and disappointed.  It triggered me to write injustice. To be clear, the song is not about that case in particular. But about injustice in general. 

2. How did you approach the collaboration with Trevor Laake on this track, and what do you feel he brought to the song?

This is actually funny. I envisioned him singing ‘Injustice’ for quite some time. The song was written in April 23 but is not quite finished. I wanted my message to sound powerful and was looking for a male voice to join me. I came across Trevor’s Instagram. He sings mostly metal, but his range is amazing…I knew he would be perfect for ‘Injustice.’ So I contacted him back in September ’23 and said: ‘Hey, can you sing with me? But the song is not finished yet. I also warned him that it was an original song, which was, of course, no problem. It was an honor to have him on my track. 

3. What was the most channeling aspect of recording this song as a collaborative track?

It was my first collaboration ever. Trevor lives in the States and I’m from Belgium so all communication happened online. Because I knew since last year that he would join me I left some space in my track. I gave him some instructions about the harmonies and he added some really cool freestyle stuff. 

4. The vocals in the song are incredibly expressive. Can you elaborate on how you achieved such a theatrical quality with your delivery? Do you have a musical theater background?

Glad you noticed. Even though you can’t see me sing you can hear the expression. I am classical trained and I sang for many years in a choir as a soprano. So I learned how to use my voice effectively. I can’t explain it myself but I do believe that my experience with classical performances helped me to be aware of my expression in order to capture the audience’s attention. Trevor has also experience with musicals. 

5. If you can share, was there any personal experience or influence that inspired the lyrical themes?

Definitely. Injustice has many forms. Even in daily life we get confronted with people who play with us and get away with it. Let’s say I’ve had my share. There’s also weird stuff happening with social media. When I open my newsfeeds I see some shocking videos or stuff that I thought about and suddenly it pops up. I had to sing about it.

6. The vocal layering in the song is expertly done. How did you approach creating and arranging the harmonies to enhance the overall sound and impact of the track?

Thank you! I guess I have an ear for it, so it comes naturally. Like I said earlier, I know how it will sound in my head, I just have to get it on paper. I love to create mash-ups because I recognize certain chords, progressions and transitions which translate into creating these layers. Sometimes I even have to hold myself back not creating too many layers because I can make it as complex as I want. It’s all about balance.

Xilla presents: “Devil’s Dice.”

Xilla has released a new song titled “Devil’s Dice.” This release highlights the artist’s passion for old-school heavy metal, as well as his ability to combine classic sounds with modern influences. Right off the bat, one thing that really stands out about Xilla is the organic approach that goes into the music. Many current metal bands tend to overcook things in the studio, resulting in an overly slick sound. However, there’s a really warm, organic vibe to this single, which highlights the natural impact of the dynamics in the song.

“Devil’s Dice” begins with a massive intro, as the drums are powerful and iconic, perfectly accenting the guitar riff that’s so distinctive and memorable right away. The harmonized guitar leads are very well executed, and they bring a higher degree of sophistication to the track, without compromising its power and immediacy. The main groove of the song eventually comes in full swing at about 25 seconds in, as the drums begin to drive along with the bass and rhythm guitars. The double bass drum kicks in at about 37 seconds in, bringing the rhythm to a whole new level of intensity and constantly building up the power of the track. Xilla did a really good job creating an escalating effect here. From the intro up to this point, it keeps growing bigger and bigger. The vocals come in at about 49 seconds in, bringing a unique twist with a more melodic approach. The drums in the verses have a more modern feel, exploring the possibilities of polyrhythmic grooves, but without making the song too experimental. It’s executed in a very seamless way, which still allows the beautiful vocal lines to be at the forefront of the arrangement. It is not always easy to combine experimental styles with a smooth and melodic approach, as the two things often clash. However, “Devil’s Dice” is a shining example of how these two different creative perspectives can converge into something that’s truly spontaneous and awesome.

The drums go for a more open vibe in the chorus, allowing the song to breathe as the guitars hit big ringing open chords to match the growing intensity of the vocal performance. The chorus fades very seamlessly into the second verse, and it’s incredible how the drums especially are able to revert to a more complex pattern in such a natural and flawless way. The second verse is adorned with extra guitars, and there’s some additional room for vocal articulations and extra layers in general, making it richer and more diverse for the benefit of the arrangement as a whole. The instrumental section that follows brings even more energy to the song with huge palm-muted guitars, locking in perfectly with the drums. The thunderous bass adds power as well, providing a thick wall of sound.

“Devil’s Dice” also has room for another instrumental bridge after the second chorus. This section is even more nuanced than the previous bridge and it contains complex elements, highlighting the musical sophistication that Xilla brings to the table in this ambitious composition. The guitar solo that starts at about three minutes and 15 seconds in is really expressive and elegant. It brings a classic heavy metal vibe to the song, further showcasing Xilla’s ability to move from “golden” era influences to more contemporary ideas, creating a bridge between the current metal scene and the heroes of the past. Following the last chorus, the song comes to a close with an outro, which is just as powerful, staying true to the mood of the song up until the very end.

In conclusion, “Devil’s Dice” is a very well-written track, and it’s apparent that a lot of work and thought went into the arrangement. Any metal fan will appreciate the variety in the composition and the instrumentation, as well as the different vocal styles, going from clean and melodic in the verses to grittier and edgier in the chorus sections.

Featherburn is back with a new single: Hold My Heart."

Featherburn is a folk-rock band with a distinctive sound. The accordion is a notable feature in the band’s music, and it brings in that timeless folk flavor with an “old world” edge to it. At the same time, the band’s songs are often very groove-driven and playful, driven by a primal stomping rhythm that’s sure to get the audience going. Such is the case of the band’s new single, “Hold My Heart.” Although this track retains the band’s joyful charisma, it actually comes from a deeper and highly personal background.

Featherburn recorded an EP called “One Precious Life” back in 2018. This was the band’s debut and a fantastic introduction to their colorful musical world. However, things suddenly took an unexpected turn. Not long after the release, the band’s drummer, Tim Jenkins, informed the band that he had been diagnosed with a brain tumor and tragically passed away the following year. This was devastating for the band, but it didn’t stop the musicians from pursuing their passion and continuing to honor Tim by keeping the flame alive. Their follow-up album, “Camp,” experienced many challenges and delays. The pandemic stood in the way for obvious reasons, but Featherburn finally came to a huge milestone: releasing a new song from the upcoming full-length! The single is titled “Hold My Heart,” and it was written during the global shutdown related to COVID-19. We all remember what it was like, as the wound is still fresh. It was a time of uncertainty, anxiety, and chaos, and what we really longed for was freedom. This song is a powerful reminder of that, which still holds very true. In addition, it’s an ode to appreciating the future because you may never really know what’s in store for tomorrow. This song, in a way, also relates to the band’s past struggles and their tragic experience with the loss of Tim, their former drummer. “Hold My Heart” also stands out as a powerful message of hope, inviting people to stay resilient in spite of the difficulties encountered along the way. There’s a sense of longing for change and rebellion against the oppression of circumstances as we long to take control and empower ourselves to live the life we want to live. The song contrasts its deep and somewhat heavy-hearted core theme with a sound that’s surprisingly airy and bright. The driving pulse of the track is reminiscent of genres such as funk and ska, but overall, it has a folk-inspired aesthetic. The verses showcase fast and articular phrasing, while the hook has a more iconic and powerful feel, with the singer really driving the point home with touching lines such as “We’ve wasted our time, our one precious life.” This is one of the most powerful segments in the song, which is a true reminder of living in the moment and treasuring every second. The sound of the instrumental, in light of this narrative twist, brings even more of a liberating power to the release, which really feels like letting go of worries and fears. This release stands out due to its high-quality production. Chris DeVitry of Bon Accord Studios created a mix that sounds balanced and detail-oriented, allowing for all the song’s finer nuances to shine.

"Hold My Heart" is a song with a deep, beautiful personal meaning. Was it cathartic to record new material as a way to react to all the setbacks you've experienced due to COVID and the tragic loss of your former drummer?

It was cathartic for sure, but not in the Eye of the Tiger-Rocky-calisthenics kind of way. The scope we operated through when producing the song (and the album) was, to me at least, myopic compared to what I typically associate with catharsis. It was indeed a way to react to the setbacks we faced. Pandemic, death, uncertainty, the loss of trajectory. I wish I could say that producing the music felt cathartic in light of those things. But it was probably more how we related with them, in the way people relate with that aspect of life too enormous to really fathom or reckon with, perhaps aside from in prayer or meditation. I think art at its best speaks back to that element of humanness. Not necessarily as a literal conversation (although it can take on some of that), but maybe as a dialogue/trade of action-events. Tim understood that, and I think he would be proud of the music he initiated.

How do you hope this song resonates with your audience, especially given the current global climate?

I hope it gets people off couches. I don’t think it’s entirely possible to place appropriate value on the limited time we have to live fully. Our capacity to act, do, communicate, feel, experience, build – they’re great gifts, but are’t guaranteed. Things like illness and death, things like global shutdowns – they kind of spell that out for us in all caps.

Can you discuss the process of bringing this song to life in the studio, and how do you approach production decisions to ensure that all the song's nuances shine through?

Owed entirely to bandmate Chris DeVitry (Bon Accord Studios), master recording and mixing engineer with decades of experience and top notch gear. He’s been a tremendous guide into the world of audio recording and mixing, and is the one who made it possible to put the song down articulately. Over the course of the pandemic, Chris showed me how to utilize the DAW, Reaper. I would create song sketches to which we would add tracks by way of cloud sharing. First accordion and lead vocals as an outline, then drums, bass, guitar, fiddle, vocal harmonies, etc. All of the recording was done either at Bon Accord or in the home setup that Chris showed me how to create. All of the mixing was done at his hand (or with his guidance). Lots and lots of replacing old tracks with better developed versions, inching closer to a finished sound with every trade. Fun fact, the only original track from the Hold My Heart song sketch that remains in the finished recording is Chris’ fiddle solo in the second section of the song.

The accordion plays a significant role in Featherburn's music, adding a distinctive folk flavor. Can you share more about how this instrument shapes your sound and influences your songwriting process?

It’s definitely changed as I’ve grown more comfortable on the instrument. Accordion isn’t as prevalent in One Precious Life because I wasn’t very good at it when we were producing that EP. I had a hard enough time just holding down my parts, and would write all of our songs on guitar before devising the accordion contribution. Since forming the band in 2014, I’ve come a long way. I’m able to express myself on the instrument with much more fluidity than before, which applies to constructing songs more now “according to the accordion”. Hold My Heart is a pretty good example of that development.

Are you planning to perform live in support of the new music?

In September of 2023, we celebrated finishing the album production with a Camp cd release party. We teamed up with our friends at Chiques Rock Outfitters in Marietta Pa to host the first “Camp Featherburn” event. Tent and RV camping, hiking, biking, paddling, nightly music jams, food and drink, which culminated into a multi-band Saturday night show. We’ll celebrate the digital release at Camp Featherburn 2024 this fall. A bit bigger, a bit better, but still a home-grown, DIY feel. We’ve got info up at featherburn.com/camp

Orion Luminiferous presents: "Brand New Me."

Orion Luminiferous has recently released his single, Brand New Me.

The opening song, "Station Identification" features a roomy, lo-fi drum beat, juxtaposing to a drone and some melodic parts that are sparse, yet very deep and dynamic. The song "Money For Memories" features some spoken word segments, which also add some ambiance and atmosphere to the mix. The beat has a very hypnotic quality, especially due to the staggered nature of the drum pattern and the synth layers, which offer a unique twist. 

"Morning Program" is another great track, which highlights Inner Space's ability to create unique textures. In this case, the song utilizes deep ambient textures and unique sudden bursts of electronic noises and sounds to add more of of an organic twist to the mix. The song "A word from our Sponser" is a truly dynamic composition, and one of the most creative and one-of-a-kind tracks on this entire collection. "Afternoon Channel Surfing" follows right up with a truly interesting soundscape, which feels incredibly dynamic and diverse. The sixth song on this album is titled "Fast Food." Clocking in at slightly over the 3-minute mark, the song combines minimalistic electronic textures with glitchy effects and some lo-fi sounds to add more character. In addition, the seventh track, "Dinner Time Viewing" is yet another example of just how much variety went into the making of these tracks, as it sports a whole new set of vibes and textures to erich the listening experience overall. The song "Feature Presentation..." has a cool old-school vibe, which some melodic synth chords and beautiful electric piano textures that add a smooth flow. The drum beat has a classic lo-fi hip-hop vibe, which really makes for a chill, gritty tone. The sounds of rain also make the song more immersive and cinematic, giving it a super laid-back vibe

In conclusion, ”Channel Z3r0" has a modern sound, but the production is not overproduced, allowing organic and "human" elements to add liveliness to the mix. I'd definitely recommend giving this one a shot, particularly if you're a fan of artists such as Blank Banshee, Nujabes, J Dilla, telepath, Lorn. This is the kind of track that will surprise you with its sonic variety and keep you on the edge of your seat due to its catchy, yet unpredictable arrangement. It's always refreshing to hear from artists who set the bar higher and push the envelope when it comes to their productions, and this certainly appears to be the case!
