Chapter 5: The next few weeks, Martin was texting Aj nonstop. He would stay up all hours of the night, just talking about menial stuff like the music they like, hair products, and other random things. He was just happy to be able to talk to Aj. They grew closer as the day turned into a week. One week turned into a week in a half. He barely spoke to anyone in the house. Theo was starting to get peeved. Finally, Aaron had enough. In the evening, he opened the door to his son's room. He tossed Martin a jacket. "Put it on, I'm taking us all out to eat." Martin looked up from the phone and nodded. "Okay. He slipped on the jacket and put his phone in the pocket. Aaron shook his head. "Without the phone Martin. It's going to be family dinner." Martin's face dropped. "Aaron! I can't just leave my phone here! What if....." he tried to think of an excuse, "what if my mom calls!" "If it's so much an emergency she will call me. Come on. Put your phone on your desk." Martin grumbled and did as he was told, walking into the living room. The three headed out in the cool air and Theo frowned. "It's summer. Why is it chilly?" "The weather doesn't always know it's summer." Aaron said and Martin looked around. The bustle of the city was starting to calm down. "But it won't stop us from a family night out." Martin followed behind Theo as they walked. He kept his hands in the pockets of his blue windbreaker. Aaron lead them to a sushi bar around the corner. It was dimly lit and a kiosk was stationed at each table for the people to order at their seats. Aaron brought the two kids to a table and showed them the items. "Don't worry about the price. Just don't order something that's fifty bucks." "Okay dad." Theo smirked and rolled her eyes. She got herself a variety plate with different types of raw fish. Martin tried to focus on the different types of food, but all he could think abot was Aj. What if Aj started to freak out becuase Martin wasn't responding. He half heartedly ordered a eel roll, ignoring the disgusted look Theo gave him. He looked out the window and pictured Aj having a panic attack. He ran his fingers through his hair, trying to relax. Soon, the food came and Marin knew immediately he had made a mistake. He looked at Arron and Theo and knew he had to eat the food. He picked one roll up and dipped it in the soy sause before putting it in his mouth. "How is it?" Theo asked, scowling at het brother's plate. He chewed slowly and broke into a smile.  "It tastes good!" He said happily. He had forgotten about Aj after that. The whole dinner was fun and the family bonded over raw fish. When they arrived home, Martin hugged Aaron and Theo before changing into his pajamas. He layed on his bed. He checked his phone and frowned. Aj: yeah Aj: hey Aj: yo Aj: Martin? Aj: dude Aj: dude where are you? Aj: are you okay? Aj: you okay? Aj: oh Aj: okay Aj: night I guess Martin paled. Martin: Aj! I meant to text you! My dad took away my phone so we could have dinner! I swear! It was 15 minutes before a response. Aj: ok Martin sighed and tried to text Aj again but he wasn't having it. Martin: meet me at the enterence to the subway. I wanna take you to lunch. Aj: what do you mean....like a date? Martin: sure. Martin face palmed. He couldn't believe he said yes. Aj: ok :) Martin set his phone down and smiled, relaxing. He fell asleep not long after. Tomorrow will be one of the best days of his life.

Chapter 4: The memory of random but metholic picking was slowly growing fainter every time it was remembered. Martin laid on his bed, distracting himself from making Theo upset yesterday by thinking about his mysterious guitar boy. 'Why am I always thinking about him? I've only seen him once!' he sighed, feeling frustrated. He ate  a few bites of a twinkie and focused on not thinking about the boy. Of couse, when you tell yourself not to think about something, you just think about that thing more. Martin groaned in agony. He needed something, anything to take his mind off of- There was a knock at his door. Martin brushed away the crumbs before saying come in. Theo opened the door but did not step in. She leaned against the door frame. "Hey...I'm not interrupting anything, am I?" she asked, studying her brother. "No," Martin sat up. "What do you need?" "I spent all of yesterday and most of today thinking and...I just wanted to apologize for yesterday." Theo walked in. "I'm sorry. I really am. I only want you to be more careful." She shifted on her feet. "Not everyone is trustworthy." "Thank you. I accept your apology." Martin said, the word sounding funny when it came out his mouth. Theo giggled. "You're accent makes a lot of words sound funny." Martin felt his face warm. "Oh..." "I don't mean it in a bad way!" Theo quickly said. She hoped she didn't make him feel bad. "No no, I understand." Martin gave a little grin. Theo looked down at the time on her phone. "Dad won't get home for another two hours. Do you want to head out somewhere?" "Um...don't get mad but I want to go back to the subway." Martin nervously fiddled with his shirt. Theo scoffed, crossing her arms. "Really? After what happened?" "Yes, you don't know how much this means to me. I need to check one last time." Martin pouted at Theo. "Please?" he begged. Theo thought for a moment. "Alright. Fine. We'll leave in five minutes." Theo said before closing the door. Martin excitedly got ready, hoping he finally get to meet Aj again. ~~~~~ Martin was both giddy and nervous. He kept wondering what he'll do if Aj isn't there. He wondered what he'll say if Aj is there. Theo walked beside him, hoping they can get this over with. Martin stuck his hands in his pocket to keep them from nervously fidgeting. He kept his eyes and ears open, waiting to  see and hear the boy with the red streak in his hair playing his guitar. "Theo...What if I can't find him?" Martin asked after a few minutes of walking. Theo shrugged. "Then I guess you just can't find him." Martin looked away, dissatisfied with the answer. "I don't know what you want me to tell you. I know I'm being a bit blunt but there is no point in sugarcoating it-" "Hold on!" Martin perked up when he the faint sound of a song being played on a gutair. He sped up. "Hey! Slow down!" Theo called up, trying to keep up with her brother and make it though the crowd. Martin felt his heart beating faster, hoping this is the moment. The moment he's waiting for for weeks. The song got  louder. He pushed his way though the crowd and saw the boy. Martin nearly stumbled over his feet. Aj wasn't paying attention to him, he was focused on finished his song. Martin watched in amazement, captivated by the song. It sounded somewhat familiar to him. He was upset for a second when it end. Aj looked up, surpised to see Martin standing there. "Aj?" Martin managed to get out. Aj stood up, holding onto his guitar. He always felt uneasy when someone he didn't know knew his name. "Who are you?" Aj asked even though Martin looked vaguely familiar. "I'm Martin. I-I heard you play before and I just had to hear more." Martin smiled nervously. He held out his hand for a handshake. Aj gently took the hand into his. They shook hands but neither of them let go. "You seem like a kind guy." Aj felt his heart beat faster. The both looked deeply into each other's eyes. Martin felt speechless. "I-I see in your eyes pain, compassion, someone who knows no end to suffering." he softly said. The two boys were oblivious to their surroundings. So caught up that neither of them noticed Theo. She scrunched up her nose upon seeing Aj with her brother. She grabbed Martin's arm. "We should go, you fount him." she snapped her brother out of his daze. "Alright...," he dropped Aj's hand. "Bye...Oh wait!" he dug a piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to Aj. "I-I was going to give you some money but some guy took it so...here's my number." he said shyly. Theo dragged him away before Aj could say anything. He looked down at the slip of paper and back up at Martin who wave back at him. Aj slowly waved back. He stood there, replaying what just happened in his head.

Chapter 3: To say that Martin felt out of place was an understatement. A week had gone by, and he still felt like a stranger in the Burr household. As he looked up at the ceiling, his mind wandered back to the night Aaron took the three of them to dinner. It was a small hole in the wall burger joint and Theo insisted that Martin try the mushroom and swiss. After they all sat down and started to eat, Aaron tried to make small talk with Martin. He asked him about his mother and the Netherlands and how America was different then where he came from. Along with other questions. Martin was forgetting what Aaron had asked because his mind had wandered to the boy in the subway. He thought back to the music, and how the boy looked at him and the way the boy’s fingers moved across the strings so effortlessly and... He was pulled away from his daydreams by a knock at the door. “Come in!” He shouted, sitting up, so it didn’t look like he was just lazing around. Theo walked in, smiling. She was in runners shorts and tank top, her hair pulled back in a tight and puffy ponytail. “Hey Marty. Whatcha up to?” she asked as she sat on the edge of her brother's bed. Martin looked around himself and shrugged. “Trying to debate getting up or not.” “It’s almost 10:30!” She nudged him, “Come on! Let’s go play some tennis!” He hesitated. “I um... I don’t play tennis.” Theo frowned, “Okay, we can head to the school basketball court. They have it open year round.” "I don't really do basketball." he played with his hands nervously. "Soccer?" "What's that?" Theo sighed and rubbed her face. "What do you do?" "Um....I usually do plays and read comics. I have a few X-Men in my bag." Martin gestured to one of his bags on the floor. Theo gave him a weird look. "Well what do you want to do?" "Can we go to the subway? I like to listen to the music." Theo laughed. "Marty, if you want to watch those silly street performers I'll take you too central park. You don't need to go down to the subway to get that type of entertainment." Martin bit his lip. He didn't know if he trusted Theo enough but after a moment he decided to tell her. "There is a specific street performer. I wanna see if he's down there." Theo gave him a funny look. "Alright.... Do you have any money?" "Five bucks. I want to give it to him." She stood up. "Alright. Get dressed and meet me at the door in ten minutes." she left, closing the door behind her. ~~~~~ After he got dressed he headed down and met up with Theo. She had on a backpack and smiled. "Easier to take more in then a purse." she opened the door. "Go ahead." "I don't know how to get to the subway." Martin stuck his hands in the pockets. Theo sighed and walked ahead. "Follow me. And don't look too long at anyone." Most of the walk was silent but Martin couldn't hold back a question that was itching at him the past week. "Theo, does your dad like me?" Theo frowned. "Where did that come from? First off, it's our dad. And second, of course he does. He wouldn't let you house with us if he didn't." "...Really?" "Yes really." they came to an opening. "Come on." They both jogged down the stairs into the busy underground. Theo tugged Martin along as he looked around for his mystery guitar boy He heard a keyboard, bongos, even a sax, but no guitar. He saw the man playing the sax and made a face. That guy was the definition of trying too hard. He stopped for a moment, and Theo gave his hand a tug. "What are you doing? You can't stand in the middle of a walkway!" He pulled Theo over to the sax man. "Maybe he knows who I’m looking for." "Hello?" he waved at the sax man. After a moment, he put down his saxophone. "Can you help me? I'm trying to find someone down here. He plays guitar." The man thought. "I don't know. But you know what might jog my memory? A couple bucks." "Martin dont-" Martin wasn't listening to Theo. He fished into his pocket and pulled out his five and put it in the case. The sax man smiled. "He's not down here today, dude. But since you were so generous I'll let him know you stopped by. His name is AJ by the way." Martin sighed. "My name is Martin. Tell him I'm the boy from last week." "Dude, he was probably high as kite. I doubt he'll remember you. But, I'll let him know. Pleasure doing business." Theo gripped Martin's hand, the name and what the boy does made her realized who her brother was looking for. She yanked his hand hard and dragged him up the stairs. "What the heck was that!?" "I just wanted to know if I could meet this guy!" "Well now this man reeking of weed probably just gave you a phony name and you gave him five dollars! Way to go bozo!" Martin bit his lip, hurt by her words. "I just wanted to know...." "Whatever. I'm dropping you off at home and I'm going to go play some basketball with my friends." she started to dragged him to the house. "Theo I'm sorry-" "Yeah, whatever..." Martin stayed silent the rest of the way home. Once he got inside he rushed to his room and curled up in bed. He reached over into one bag, grabbing a comic to distract him. One week in and he already screwed himself. He wondered how the rest of summer would go. It could only go up from here, right?

First fic post!!
~~~~~
Martin was unsure of what expect. New town, new peoole, and definately a new atmosphere. As the subway bounced and sped, all he could think about was meeting his dad. Not his step dad, but his actual dad he found out about only three weeks before. When the subway slowed, he grabbed his duffle and suitcase, stepping out into the crowd when the doors opened.
As if everything quieted, he heard strings plucking and making a small tune. He followed the sound until he came up to a kid around his age, strumming his gutair for money. He had eyeliner smudged under his eyes, some rock band shirt on, and wore ripped jeans as if it was going out of style. He didn’t know why, but as soon as he saw the kid, he was infatuated by him. He pulled out a few coins in his pocket and threw it in the guitar case. The boy looked up and the strumming slowed. Martin gave a small smile before being pushed away by the crowd and hurried up the steps.
He walked into the light and looked down at the slip in his hand. It was address to his new home for the summer and decided to use the little cash he had to take a cab to the place. The ride was quick and quiet. He didn’t bother to talk, he was busy think about his new family, his new life.
When the cab dropped him off, he stared at the place where he’ll be living at for the summer. It wasn’t a huge building, but it was huge enough to have a penthouse. His father’s penthouse. As he walked in and rode the elevator to the top, he begain to feel anxious. When his stepped off, he stoop right in front of thw door to his new home. He hessitated before knocking on the door. A few seconds passed before the door openned and there stood a girl, sucking on a lolipop. She looked him up and down and turned to the inside of the house. “DAAAAAAAAAAD. The white kid’s here!” she stepped aside and Martin stepped in.
“You were expecting me?”
“Your mom gave a call last week. We’ve been expecting you since Thrusday. Come on. I’ll show you your room.” she grabbed his arm and lead him to his new room. “It’s my old room. Then it became the game room. Now it’s your room.” she smiled. “Dad’ll come and give you the tour. Now I gotta finish my project. APUSH is kicking my butt.” she jogged off.
Martin looked around and set his stuff down, examining the room. It wasn’t too big or too small, it felt just right. He looked out the window, the bustle of city life was in full swing, a different pace of his old life in the Netherlands. A fist fight had just broken out on the street.
“Anything interesting going on out there?”
Martin turned around and bit his lip. He expected his father to be….well to have more hair then he did. Martin stepped over, “H-hey Dad.”
Aaron walked over and looked him up and down. Happy to finally see his son in front of him, not just in photos. “Call me Aaron for now. Dad is just….too formal.” he stuck out his hand.
Martin looked up and shook his hand. “A-alright…” he let go of his father’s hand. He felt akward and nervous, all the things he planned to say suddenly left his head.  “Um question….if its summer, why does that girl have homework?” he said for the sake of saying something.
“Summer project. And her name is Theo, she is my daughter… From my first wife.” he smiled and looked over his shoulder. “She is just not used to strangers. She’ll warm up to you.”
Martin sighed. So that’s all he was. A stranger.
“Hey. Dinner is in a half hour. Go wash up, the bathroom is down the left, and Theo and I will take you on the town. Take you to our favorite deli. Then you can say you had a real new york rubuen. How does that sound?”
Martin nodded. “Yeah. I’d like that. Thanks…uh, Aaron.”
“No problem kid.” he walked out.
Martin stared at the empty doorway, taking in a deep breath in attempt to calm himself down. He pulles out his phone and called his mom, telling her that he made it safely.
