Superman Smashes the Klan (2020)
The year is 1946. Teenagers Roberta and Tommy Lee just moved with their parents from Chinatown to the center of Metropolis, home to the famous hero, Superman. Tommy makes friends quickly, while Roberta pines for home. Then one night, the family awakens to find their house surrounded by the Klan of the Fiery Kross! Superman leaps into action, but his exposure to a mysterious green rock has left him weak. Can Roberta and Tommy help him smash the Klan?
Inspired by the 1940s Superman radio serial “Clan of the Fiery Cross,” New York Times bestselling author Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese, Boxers and Saints, The Terrifics, New Super-Man) and artist Gurihiru (Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Unstoppable Wasp) bring us a personal retelling of two different immigrants finding ways to belong.

““The problem is no longer getting people to express themselves, but providing little gaps of solitude and silence in which they might eventually find something to say. Repressive forces don’t stop people from expressing themselves, but rather, force them to express themselves. What a relief to have nothing to say, the right to say nothing, because only then is there a chance of framing the rare, or ever rarer, the thing that might be worth saying.””

[…] I shall die here. Every inch of me shall perish. Every inch, but one. An Inch, it is small and it is fragile, but it is the only thing the world worth having. We must never lose it or give it away. We must never let them take it from us. I hope that whoever you are, you escape this place. I hope that the world turns and that things get better. But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you. I love you. With all my heart, I love you. -Valerie

In the first state, man and sword become one and each other. Here, even a blade of grass can be used as a lethal weapon. In the next stage, the sword resides not in the hand but in the heart. Even without a weapon, the warrior can slay his enemy from a hundred paces. But the ultimate ideal is when the sword disappears altogether. The warrior embraces all around him. The desire to kill no longer exists. Only peace remains.

Cleaning Up Rivers
Tumblr media
So, I was just checking out TeamTrees.org. As you probably know, they hit $21 Million, which is amazing. Gonna plant soooo many trees.
Some people have been wondering what to do next, with many people pointing out that the seas are f*cked right now. For one, climate change is warming them. That’s a monstrously big problem. Another: there’s tons of plastic waste which is harming wildlife and showing up in our food.
The Ocean Cleanup Project is famous for their idea and system for cleaning up ocean gyres, but they also recently unveiled a system - “the Interceptor” - to clean up plastic waste from its main source: rivers. Though estimates vary, it appears as though just 10-20 rivers contribute the vast majority of plastic waste to oceans.
But there have been issues with the Ocean Cleanup in terms of effectiveness of their system. Which is not to naysay the project, but to point out that they know there’s room for iterative improvement. One issue in particular that has come up is how plastics and wastes are dispersed. The OC has argued that most is at the surface, but there is some evidence to the contrary (x). Additionally, I haven’t seen any numbers on how effective their systems are at trapping debris and microplastics overall, in ocean or rivers.
One thing I’ve seen a bit which seems intriguing is the “The Bubble Barrier”, which is a system that makes a “fence” of air bubbles that push and move debris to the surface. It’s simple too: Just a line of tubing in the water with holes in it and air pumped through it.
I’m real curious about a combined system of the interceptor using the bubble barrier as well. Would seem really easy to build and I’d guess would improve the rate of debris catchment.
Anyways, I think buying such an Interceptor system would overall be a good goal for Mr. Beast’s 2020 goal. The interceptors cost around $775,000 right now, but costs are expected to drop with more production. Let’s say, $600,000. Let’s say we up the goal for this year to $30 M. That’d pay for 50 interceptor systems, well past the top 10-20 that contribute the most to ocean pollution. I also think/hope that it would help raise awareness about the issue, and the power of everyday people to work together to help fix them.
So yeah, TeamSeas~ 2020.
