every now and then i think ab how my mum told me my aunt’s bf used to have a dog, and when she took it out for a walk once at the cliffs nearby, she threw the ball for him and had to witness her dog run off the fucking cliff edge and that’s it. she genuinely couldn’t do anything but explain to her partner why she didn’t come back with their dog and has HAUNTED me ever since likee

recently, there has been some discourse about the true meaning of mitski's music.
mitski is a artist of color who makes songs about her relationship with her mixed race heritage. some of most famous songs such as nobody include lines about trying and failing to fit eurocentric beauty standards. other songs, such as strawberry blonde, are about unrequited romance. many people of color have taken this song to be about being rejected for a white woman.
however, one of mitski's songs is EXPLICITLY about being in an interracial relationship with cultural differences. your best american girl is a love song about the asian narrator's romance with a white person. this song includes lines such as 'your mother wouldn't approve of how my mother raised me' and 'i guess i couldn’t help trying to be your best american girl'. while it is a love song, it is also about the vast difference in the cultures both of the subjects grew up in.
however, many fans have taken this song, and have left out the interracial narrative. certain fans have also argued that you can take this song out of it's context. that you can interpret it however you want. while that is a valid point, and it is one that i am personally in favor of, it ignores a much larger problem i have seen with mitski's fanbase.
white mitski fans forget that some of mitski's songs are about being mixed race.
this is illustrated in how people leave out the racial context of some of her most famous songs. while it is always good to leave the talk about race to people of color, white fans usually erase this context. they ignore any hint of race in her work.
take how many fans have questioned how some people believe that strawberry blonde has anything to do with race. they become defensive when they are told that a song, that they have associated with pining, might be about race. they beg the person pointing it out to 'let people interpret a song how they want'.
when you ignore how a person of color's life experience affects their work, and become defensive when you are told that a song could possibly be about race, you need to ask some questions to yourself.
why are you telling people of color, and others, that not everything is about race? why do you choose to ignore the possible racial context of a song, in favor of making it about your white experiences?
while you can perceive art in the way you wish to, it is ignorant to forget the original context. it is also ignorant to tell fans of color that your way of perceiving this work is the correct way. when you choose to ignore how a song's meaning might be rooted in a person's relationship to their race, and try to erase that context, you are ignoring the possible meaning of a song. if you cannot understand how other people interpret art, then are you truly someone who enjoys that piece of art?
