White Privilege
How could you possibly say whtie privilege doesn’t exist. It is very surprising that some of you people think that white privilege isn’t a real thing or know what it is. I can explain how it exists in several different ways. White people have the privilege to be favoured in the school system. The ratio of black kids getting suspended or kicked out of school compared to white kids is mind-blowing. A black kid could do something minor and get suspended and a white kid would just get a warning for the same thing. This is not just my opinion, there is research that confirms this. In some prisons you'll see that the majority of the prisoners are black. White people will never have to worry being killed by the police at a young age like Trayvon Martin. They don’t have to worry about their kids being born into a system that is against them.
In most of the large companies in Canada and the U.S, the presidents and senior managers are white. But the good thing about this though is that companies recognize this and are working to fix this by changing the way they hire employees.
For you to understand, you guys have to listen to black people’s stories to learn white privilege and know that it’s real.

Letter to your flag
1. A line that spoke to me was when the speaker said “Black people are watched when they enter a store to shop.” This spoke to me because I can relate to it. I see this happen pretty much everyday, I’ve experienced it a few times. For example two years ago my friends and I walked into a dollar store and one of the workers gave another worker an eye signal to spy on us. The worker continued to watch us so I told everyone to pull out their cards or cash so she could stop. She still never stopped watching us. When we left the store we just kept saying why are these people so annoying and judgmental. Just because I’m black they assume I’m going to steal something and it’s so crazy to me.
2. A connection I can make with Obama's speech is where he says “no single American can fix this country alone. Not even the president. I’m asking you to believe in your own ability--to embrace your own responsibility as citizens” this is to make sure the basic tenets of our democracy endure”. I connected with this because it reminds me of our democracy in Canada. Even our Prime Minister alone can’t make Canada great. We all have to make an effort to make a change in our country. For example following the law such as not stealing and committing violent crimes. People should do their best to find jobs so that there are less people depending on the government for welfare. They can also volunteer in their community to help those that need help. Getting a good education so that they can serve your country. Serving your country by becoming local trustees or councilors. It’s good that high school students have to do community service hours because this helps them care about their community more. These are some ways that people can help to make a country better.

Obama’s speech
1. A similarity between each text is freedom and equality. Obama and Lanston both talk about freedom and liberty in America. An American that is great, where there is equality of opportunity for everyone regardless of their race or background.
2. Obama mentions the North Star in reference to the Constitution. Even though it wasn't a perfect document/plan, it had a North Star that could help to direct future generations. In Hughes’ poem he is he is hopeful but all he sees is the same old stupid plan. He says that they have drawn a veil across the stars. Basically, saying there is no hope or good plan for the future to make America better.
3. The tone is different between Obama and Hughes. Obama is calm and hopeful but Hughes is angry, sees everything as hopeless. Obama is more realistic, positive and hopeful but Hughes is idealistic and negative about Amercia’s and it’s hope of changing.

A Smile To Remember
1. Theme-what themes do you notice in the poem-explain how the themes contribute to your understanding of the poem?
Some themes that I noticed in the poem are abuse, sadness and depression. The poet’s mother was abused by the poet’s father. His mother was sad because he wasn’t smiling and putting on a happy face while she was being abused in front of him. The poet said “ but my father beat her two or three times a week while raging through his 6 foot two frame because he couldn't defeat what was attacking him.” I think the poet was trying to say his father was depressed or fighting a different mental health issue, and that’s why his father would beat his mom because he didn’t know how to deal with his emotions.
2. Do you agree or disagree with the poem? Explain your thinking.
I disagree with the poem because no one should just accept someone abusing them. They should go seek help, find a way to resolve the situation. The mother is setting a very bad example for her son because she is just sitting there and getting abused. The father is also setting a bad example for his son because he’s beating the poet’s mom in front of him almost every day. His father also needs help, he clearly has a mental issue. The poet had to see his mom beaten in front of him and he can’t do anything about it. His mother also wanted him to put on a smile and pretend like everything is ok. But ignoring a problem doesn’t make it go away.
3. Jot down and respond to a favourite line or favourite image. What specifically do you like about the poem. Be specific, pay attention to beautiful words, phrases and language.
I wouldn’t say It’s my favourite thing about the poem. But what stood out to me is when the poet said “one day all the goldfish died, all five of them, they floated on top of the water, on their sides, the eye on each top side still open, and when my father got home he threw them to the cat there on the kitchen floor and we watched as my mother smiled.” This stood out to me because the mother smiles to cover up pain and sadness. I think that’s why she smiled when the fish died instead of grieving.
Personal connections-is there any way in which you relate to anything in the poem?
One thing I can relate to on a personal level is putting on a fake smile just like the poet’s mom. The mother puts on a fake smile when she is trying to cover up her pain. I put on a fake smile when I lose anything. For example a video game or a sport. I do it to pretend I’m not mad or sad that I lost. Another thing I can relate to is someone telling you that you should smile more and you'll be happier. When I was on public transit a random person approached me and said you should smile more. Just like what the poet’s mom said to him.

A Dog and Waterfall
A pretty black
spotted dog alone in a park.
Took him home and he started to drool
when he saw all the food in the refrigerator.
His mouth was dripping water
like pouring streams of a natural blue waterfall

Activity 2: Covid-19 Quarantine
1.One of things I can connect with in this article is how crazy it is that people are still leaving their house dressed up late at night during this pandemic. Everytime I look out the window I ask myself where they are going? Do they know Covid-19 is going around? If they do, why are they risking it?
Another thing I can agree with is that there are older people who may want someone to talk to. I relate to this because during this pandemic, my family and I would call my grandfather everyday to check on him to see If he’s ok and try to cheer him up. It’s depressing for him to be stuck inside and not be able to go outside like he used to.
2.When I look out the windows of my house in the morning and evening I see my neighbours making things out of wood in their garage, riding their bikes, people fixing cars in their driveway, cars using our street as shortcuts, kids running around and screaming. When I look out the windows at night I see like seven raccoons every night, people hosting parties. I look forward to being able to spend time with my neighbours that I’ve not been able to visit. My mom can’t even visit her close friend on our street. Yes, my view changes depending on the time of day because you won’t see stuff that will happen at night in the morning.
3.This pandemic has made me realize and learn a lot of things. I realize how much I appreciate my family and friends. Under quarantine I realized what type of work my parents have to do everyday and how hard it is. You realize how much more you appreciate your friends when you are away from them for so long, you recognize how bored you are without them. Covid-19 also helped me because I was able to get a lot more sleep than I did when schools were open. Also, I never really ate a proper breakfast everyday. I would just grab a snack and beverage and just head to school.
My family saved lots of money because of covid. They didn’t have to give me lunch money, bus fare or pay for gas and other expenses like the GoTrain. My family and I started to use hand sanitizer a lot more and we are more cautious of the things we touch or who we hug or give a handshake and we never go out without our masks. The world has changed because of covid but even though it’s caused so much illness and death, I also seen a lot of people become more ambitious and start their own online business to make money while at home. This pandemic made me think more about what I want in life and goals I want to achieve.

Crash
Text to text
Near the end of the film the young white cop shot the black guy that he picked up on the side of the road. The cop thought that the black guy was making fun of him, when the black guy reached into his pocket to show him why he was laughing the cop pulled out his gun and shot him in his chest. He shot him because he thought he had a gun because he’s black. This reminds me of the film national security when Earl (a black guy) locks his car with the keys inside of it, when he tries to get back in Hank ( a white cop) sees him and thinks he's stealing the car because he’s black.
Text to self
At the beginning of the film a white woman got closer to her husband and grabbed his arm because she saw black people in front of her. I've experienced racism before but not in that way. In grade 5 my mom was thinking about moving to pickering, so one day we went to look at some houses and on one of the streets we saw a white man on his driveway and he waved his hand telling us to leave. My mother was very upset and yelled at him through the window for being racist.
Text to world
In the film the old officer pulled over a black couple for no reason, told them to get out the car and when they got out he molested the black man’s wife and abused his power as a police officer. Him abusing his power reminds me of when the white officer was kneeling on George floyd’s neck for 7 minutes and killed him. I think that some police abuse their power and as soon as they get their badge rules don’t apply to them.
