the regular sparrow is chatting outside the top of your bed
though you've begged it not to as
to let me rest further
this conversation is one i do not mind so
i sneak glances as
you continue to get dressed from across the room
i lay upon the waves of the bed
pretending to sleep
while you are stealing glances back because
if I fall back asleep
there will be a cup of coffee waiting for me
if you are not
you are already making us more downstairs
cutting apple slices just the way
we both like
not measuring the perfect amount of sugar for
my second cup
waiting for me to rise
in just the way you always do
anticipating
but not demanding
to be known

GOD LEFT ME A DEAD PHONE NUMBER AND I KEEP CALLING
i have dialled the same number for twelve years / static-lunged / coughing up nothing but the sound of someone else's breathing / [a pause] / [a click] / no voice / just the yawning space where something should be / the hold music thick as syrup, curling in the folds of my throat / i hum along, off-key, desperate / yes / yes, i would like to be seen, yes i would like to exist, yes i would like to know how it ends before it does
i keep the phone pressed to my ear like a thing both worshipped & abandoned / the operator says press one to leave a message but i only have my hands / empty, cupped / waiting for sound / waiting for proof / waiting for anything but my own breath
the last time we spoke i was fourteen & you were already dust / an after-image burned into the inside of my eyelids / i peeled my skin apart like i might find you in there / but it was just sinew / just the stretch & pull of a body continuing / i should have stopped it / should have dug a hole in the backyard & slept there until the dirt filled my ears & made me forget what you sounded like / but you keep answering / you keep answering / you keep answering & never speaking

blue light
the sun has set in front of us and I'm still thinking of you even though our hands are double knotted in your passenger seat and the sky is just that shade of blue where you know you're headed home or, at least, to the feeling or something just close enough to be tangible because all i can do is forgo words and crash into you so we will collide in motion with ourselves we are heading back to because we have found our way back to each other while finding our way back home in the blue light of where everything is given the chance to begin again

my favorite letter
there is something written for me in the folds of your body where your shoulder meets your breast forming a "v" you've written me a month's worth of letters but this may be my favorite one tucked perfectly in-between the middle of my lover

there is citrus on your dashboard and
we are on the phone with my mom asking about her focaccia recipe you're trying not to laugh at her saying "put that fucker in the oven" because you think she doesn't know you're with me on the other end of the line it's snowing now it isn't lost on me the bread is baking the sun is rising there is work to be done, but it doesn't feel like it I'm making cyanotypes on your living room floor you're checking in kissing my forehead I'm researching cave paintings you are working, I am creating we still create in our own ways it isn't lost on me I am clutching letter #31 it smells like you it smells like you and I still can't believe you've spent thirty one days showing me I am worth the cost of a stamp I knew I could be worth it you never hesitated to show me and I'll keep bringing you citrus so keep sending those letters there will always be enough oranges or pomelos or lemons or grapefruits and if there aren't, I'll join you planting trees so we may both have the ways we show each other love
