“I think I’m pregnant.” Mara is so nonchalant about the statement while inserting the pump into the car, it would be easy to miss that she’s said anything at all. But when she looks up at Kara, her eyes are searching. Waiting. Counting every breath and second to see what her serious girlfriend of a year and half will say in response.

Then, a moment later, she breaks into a ridiculous laugh. The fact that she can’t have children is something they’ve discussed — thought not in any great detail.

It takes a moment before she regains her composure and she reaches out to pull Kara closer. She kisses her lips. Then her shoulder. “See. Doesn’t that make it… a little less awful now that I have to tell you I have to kill someone soon. I know who. I just don’t know when. I… am waiting for my orders.” There’s no longer humor in her expression. Instead there’s the faintest hint of regret. “You told me never to lie to you. Lying by omission counts.”
