What I think makes Superman (2025) so effective - besides the fact that they actually Get Superman as a character - is that they aren't trying to make him exist in our world. They're not spending most of the movie trying to figure out wHaT iT mEaNs that someone with so much power exists in our world!!!! They're starting from the point that not only has this been the reality of the universe we're watching for the last 300 years, we're also dropping in on Superman's life three years into his career as Superman. Other heroes already exist. The public is pretty used to it, actually?

Superman's powers may be unique, but superheroes aren't. Frankly, that makes it a much richer and more compelling backdrop for a movie - the drama gets to come from the heroes as people instead of us having to spend entire movies watching everyone freak out about superheroes existing. We've already seen that movie, several times, and now instead we get a whole established sandbox to play around with.

Also if you want to talk about the performance afterwards then you need to trade them your True Name, your home address, your date of birth and your personal interests.

You do this so that the fae can this information on a scroll and give it to local business owners.

Another part of the deal they broke is that nobody may talk negatively about those businesses within the market walls. In fact, your friends say, the enchantment is so effective that it's very difficult to talk negatively about anything at all.

“I know it sounds un-good,” your friend admits. “But there are loopholes.”

“In retrospect,” another friend says, “I wish the town had voted un-yes to teaching the fae about money.”

“On the plus side,” the first friend says, “I hear the market is investing in one of those enchanted statues that responds to questions with deliberately ambiguous riddles, so long as you trade it your memories of secondary school.”

excuse me for stating the obvious but like. james gunn outright calling superman an immigrant and doubling down on it when he got backlash (because he IS an immigrant, that's the point of superman) + the in-movie dialogue of "aren't you going to read me my rights?" "you're an extraterrestrial, son. you haven't got any rights to read." + the violence of his arrest and how they torture and mistreat him unapologetically, all under the guise of "protecting america", in a film releasing during the onslaught of violent ICE kidnappings and abuse... yeah it's really no wonder right-wing knobheads are crying about this being woke. they're being forced to look directly at the reasons one of the most notorious heroes of all time would not be on their side. and that's only ONE of the reasons this movie covers
