Seriously. Don’t ever buy a rabbit on impulse. If you haven’t actually sat down and researched rabbit care, I can almost guarantee you don’t know how to take care of a rabbit. Here’s the thing:
Pretty much everything the average person thinks they know about pet rabbits is wrong.
They are not low-maintenance pets. They are not good pets for children. They cannot be cuddled and played with like cats and dogs. They cannot be kept in a small animal cage like rodent pets. Also, they’re not rodents!
It’s been suggested (and well-accepted in the rabbit community) that rabbits are more closely related to horses than rodents.
And think about that for a second; because what the average person thinks they know about how to take care of a horse is a way better guide to taking care of a rabbit than what they think they know about taking care of a small animal.
Rabbits are tiny horses. They need lots of space, lots of excercise, lots of food, lots of attention, and lots of vet care. Neglecting any of requirements will result in the animal wasting away, getting sick, or going insane.
Delilah was so stir-crazy and starved for affection when I rescued her, she would throw herself against the bars of her cage, and press her cheek against them to make it easier to pet her if you chose. It was heartbreaking
If you think you want a rabbit because a dog or a cat needs too much space, attention, time, effort, vet care, etc etc, you’re WRONG. Do not get a rabbit, because they need all those things just as much as a cat or dog!
This Easter, get a stuffed bunny instead.

(Bunnies and Sunshine)
Easter is coming up! And it’s a terrible time for pet store bunnies!
Rabbits are marketed as “easy”, short-lived, starter pets, especially during the Easter holidays, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth! A healthy, well cared for bunny can live just as long as the average cat or dog- 10-12 years!
What’s more, they have more complex needs than a cat or a dog. Rabbits are prey animals and do not behave or show affection in the same way as predators like cats and dogs; they don’t deal well with being outside-only animals; they can get sad if they’re on their own and don’t receive enough attention; and if they’re bought as a male and female couple, they can start reproducing from as early as 5-6 months of age, and they can carry multiple litters at the same time!
They have a specialised diet (NOT carrots!), need a specialised living area (unless you want all your things to get chewed up!), and they need specialised vets! Caring for them costs as much as caring for a dog!
They’re a big responsibility!
This Easter, Make Yours Chocolate!

FLOAT.ORG is doing a “rescue rabbit” design to benefit House Rabbit Society. I think it closes in 2 days so check it out. Items are pricey $26-40ish, $8 per item go to HRS (not the greatest but it’s something), if you’re interested.

59. What is your least favorite rabbit stereotype and why?
#bunblr @pickle-bun
This question stood out to me. My least favorite rabbit stereotype is that rabbits smell bad and that they poop everywhere. This stereotype stems from ignorance about proper rabbit housing and care. A rabbit confined to a small cage for hours or days will naturally have a foul smell since it is forced to live and relieve itself in a small area. You would smell too if you were forced to live in a bathroom for days!
Rabbits with proper housing, which includes adequate run space for the size of the bunny and litter training do not smell whatsoever. Paper based litter such as the brand “Yesterdays News” http://www.yesterdaysnews.com/ eliminates any odor and is safe for your bun.
Rabbits are inclined to potty in one space, making litter box training very easy for rabbit owners. Pooping outside the litter box indicates your rabbit may be territorial marking. Such behavior is usually completely eliminated once your bunny is neutered/spayed. Your rabbit is also sensitive to the condition of his or her litter box. If you fail to maintain a clean litter box for your bunny he or she may refuse to use it as a result. You wouldn't want to use a dirty bathroom either!
