light Yagami is such a compelling character because he is perfect. On every level. He IS the beauty standard, his grades are perfect, his voice is perfect, his background is perfect, his behaviour is perfect, his responses are perfect. And that makes him more alien than if he were flawed. To be completely honest, I don’t think death note would be as compelling to me if light were anything less. It’s what makes him being Kira so interesting, because we see that it’s not the corruption of an Everyman, it’s the rotten insides of a perfect porcelain doll that might have been there all along. And because he is perfect to everyone he is a Russian doll of masks and I don’t know if we ever fully see the real him except in moments where no one is looking (-like the split second before Ryuk appears in episode 1 where he’s laughing to himself in his room..?)

light needs to be perfect in every way for him to carry the same presence as a character.
