Sims 4 x 10 Years!

Ten years ago today, I booked the day off on my work schedule and played a lot of Sims 4.

I'd been a Simmer since 2000, after one of my kids asked for the game because they'd seen it at a friend's house. I played The Sims, and then Sims 2, and then Sims 3. Sims 3 and my computer didn't get on too well, and I fought it a lot, wanting to play rotationally as a micromanager! When the Sims 4 trailers started coming out, I felt like they'd finally made a version of the game that was really for me, as a micromanaging rotational player who doesn't want to restart for new packs and new worlds, and who likes some quirk and exaggeration.  

So on September 2, 2014, I installed Sims 4. (I'd preordered, of course!) I downloaded trailer Sims from the Gallery (I still have a soft spot for Amber -- in one of my saves, back around 2015, she married Elvis Presley). I giggled at Sims sticking their fingers in their ear while they cooked. I got annoyed by the push-ups. I completely failed at making a roof. A Sim read a book while on the toilet and I was delighted. I took my Willow Creek Sim to visit the bar in Oasis Springs and enjoyed the view there (I like the dinos).

I made a self-Sim and spent lots of time tweaking her face till my husband came into the room, glanced at my monitor, and said, "Hey, that's actually you!" She's still my self-Sim (over on my avatar there). I just update her look now and then as I update my own.

I had a lot of fun, and I found myself using Sims as a new creative outlet in ways I hadn't so much before. I felt creative.

Eventually I confessed to my daughter that I'd actually played with my self-Sim. Here she is as a scientist back in 2015. Once upon a time, in an earlier version of the game, we -- me and my kids -- were playing with "us" in game and I died in a model rocket accident. This was traumatic and I was not supposed to play with "us" anymore. This time I did not die.

And here I am still playing! (But my hair went white.) I've had three-day saves and seven-year saves (RIP that save!). I've played every pack, but there are still base game things I haven't done! Sometimes I get really caught up in too much micromanaging with the game (townies really do often need fixing), then a new pack comes out and I try new things and it's a lot of fun again. It makes me laugh.

I've also made new friends in Sims communities and helped lots of Simmers keep playing the game. I started doing that back in 2014. A lot of the Sims community back then was focusing on what was bad about Sims 4. I was having fun with it, though, and enjoyed helping other people on the Forums who just wanted to do that.

That just kind of... morphed. It turned into some Forums posts gathering scattered info about upcoming packs from the various places SimGurus were saying things (I stopped doing those a couple of years ago -- there are websites gathering that info now, and a lot less places it turns up too). It turned into threads gathering info about mods that got broken in big game patches... and that was way back in 2015! I'm delighted that it turned into a whole thing in the community, with different places providing the info different ways. Getting to know the modding community after starting that has been a lot of fun. I even brushed off my old programming knowledge from high school and took over some mods from a modder I'd gotten to know well. I do like the lack of punch cards in modern programming!

I'm also super thankful to EA and Maxis for inviting me some years ago to be a Game Changer (the program that morphed into the EA Creator Network). I love the connections I have with other creators and storytellers and support people in the EACN, even if I feel really tiny next to the big names with their thousands and thousands of followers (but a quick thank you to my little group of Patrons! I appreciate you a ton!). I am also very appreciative of the gifted packs from EA that I receive as part of the EACN. They've helped make it a little bit easier to volunteer my time to supporting other Simmers, even if I do now have to put disclaimers on gameplay content I post, which sometimes feels a bit silly.

tldr: Happy 10th Birthday, Sims 4! I hope it's a fabulous one.

And now I'm going to grab some lunch, do some chores, then dive back into my current save. Cassandra has two love interests to consider, and that jewel is charging up. Plus she really needs a cat. And some actual income. And some improvements in her spellcasting (my previous save's Cassandra was a Mermaid). And that's not to start on Alexander building some skills before he heads off to uni for Robotics...

Lovestruck: Ask to Just Be Friends Romantic Relationship Fix

For some reason when breaking off a romantic relationship with the "Ask to Just Be Friends" interaction, the game does not remove romantic satisfaction or romance dynamics from the relationship. This means despite breaking things off officially - nullifying engagements and no longer considering the sims romantic partners - sims would still get moody over their romantic satisfaction decaying or get buffs for their romance dynamic.

This mod makes sure the interaction removes romantic satisfaction and romance dynamics from the relationship the same way the meaner "Break Up" interaction does, with a custom notification for this scenario.

Lovestruck: Ask To Work On Romance Dynamic Fix

The interaction to ask to work on a romance dynamic is unfortunately broken. The interaction is supposed to work unless the target is in a bad mood, or if the social context of the conversation is bad (e.g. an Abhorrent or Boring discussion). In the checks for the social context, the game mistakenly checks for the basic conversation relationship bit (relbit_SocialContext_Awkwardness_Casual). This is present for every conversation, meaning the interaction would always fail. This is also the only interaction in the entire game that checks for this specific bit, so it's likely a mistake.

This mod fixes the interaction by removing the misplaced relationship bit.

For Rent Unjustified Eviction Fix

The game states that if a tenant breaks a rule, is overdue on rent, or is within the grace period, eviction is justified. The label on the eviction button will be "Justly Evict". However, EA wrote the test for applying penalties in the case of unjustified eviction incorrectly: a tenant can break the rules and be overdue on rent, but as long as they're not also in the grace period, the game will act as if the eviction was unjustified. Any one of those conditions not being met will trigger the bug.

This mod adjusts the tests to ensure that the conditions are checked properly, and the game will only consider an eviction unjust with none of them met.

Off The Grid Interactions Fix

Certain interactions on tablets or the Get Famous drones check for the Off-The-Grid lot trait instead of checking for what utilities are currently enabled. There are bugs filed for this, but no resolution has come:

This mod fixes the affected interactions by changing them to use utility_info instead of checking for the lot trait.

African Male YA Template Fixes

STILL RELEVANT

Edit 08-18-2024: I previously marked this mod as obsolete/fixed by EA, but either I was mistaken or this issue was reintroduced. So, this mod is still relevant if you want your YA black men to look right.

While looking through the tuning files of the different templates a while back, I made an interesting discovery: EA had set the template for YA African males to use the Asian tag set. This can cause African YA sims to spawn with items (and probably facial features) tagged as Asian. This is likely an accident - all other African templates use the African tag set - but I wasn’t sure.

I made the change, tested how CAS handled african sims, noted better generation, and moved on. Because I don’t have the tools to generate new sims based on templates, I couldn’t tell if my changes actually effected CAS. I think after this guy generated on a new save, that I can firmly say my mod improves how “African” sims using that template look.

At the very least, this mod fixes a mistake EA made in the tuning. Happy black history month :)

Tablet Off The Grid Fix

OBSOLETE

This mod has been superseded by "Off The Grid Interactions Fix", which is meant to solve the issue for more than just the tablet.

When playing with Cottage Living, I discovered that many of the interactions on the tablet didn't work because the lot was Off The Grid. The following tablet interactions test for the Off The Grid lot challenge in tests_globals instead of using utility_info:

Gossip Tweak Mods

When playing through High School Years with the Drama Llama aspiration, I noticed some quirks that bothered me. Here are the fixes.

Trash Talk Fix

When trash talking another sim with the socials added for the neighborhood stories update, sims without the loyal trait that were not friends with the victim would get a 3-day tense moodlet for "Loyal sims trash talking a friend". EA failed to actually check that the sim had the loyal trait and that the victim was a friend in the tuning that adds the buff.

This mod modifies loot_Relbit_Loyal_TrashTalked to test the relationship and that the talking sim has the loyal trait before doing anything.

Drama Llama Tweak

The Drama Llama aspiration asks sims to Gossip 5 times. This goal tested for many gossip socials, but not the socials mentioned above like trash talking, talking up another sim, or matchmaking. Since the friendly variants are in the "Gossip" category, I figure they should count. Plus, it's jucier if you have gossip with actual gameplay effects.

This mod modifies objectives_Asp_Teen_DramaLlama_A1_1, adding the following to the list of interactions it tests for:

Better Beard & Goatee - 500 Follower Gift

I am back with some new Growing Together mesh edits as a thank you to everyone who has shared my content and welcomed me to this lovely community!

This time I have taken on the challenge of reshaping the beard that came with the pack and making a few changes that I feel improve the overall look.

The following is an alternative to the beard pictured above, it includes my edit of the beard but no alteration to the mustache. It is available as an override and as a standalone.
