Vari wasn't surprised this was the first time the elf had been robbed. She was pretty aloof, even looked a little lost. Vari had been very much like this elf a few months ago. Kirkwall was easy to get lost in. The thief smiled and shrugged a shoulder, "Not a problem. Coin's hard enough to come by here without it jumping out of your pocket." She looked over the elf in front of her with an appraising eye. This one certainly didn't dress like all the other city elves, and then there were the tattoos on her face.
Putting two and two together, Vari tilted her head to the side. "Hope you don't mind me asking but, are you Dalish?" she askes, merely curious. She'd never seen a Dalish elf before. There was no real reason for her to go up to Sundermount. Even in Ferelden, she'd never come across the clan there.
Too lost in her own world to notice the weight lifted from her pocket, Merrill kept on moving. She had left her twine behind before leaving for the markets, and without it she wasn’t sure if she would have been able to find her way home. A small frown had tugged at her lips, it worried her still that she could get lost in Kirkwall. No matter how much she reassured herself that things would get easier, they didn’t seem too.  As it was, a tap brought her back to reality, her brows knitting together in confusion. “But I didn’t… oh, serannas for returning it. You wouldn’t believe how many times it’s happened to me before, or maybe you would because it has happened quite a lot in the past.”

Even though she's expecting it, Vari jumps at the tight grip. Wow, this woman is good. Could those eyes be any colder? The thief wonders if she practices that look often. Anyone else may have just pissed themselves. It just gives Vari even more determination to learn from this amazing--
Wait. Was that an Orlesian accent? It was. Of course, she has to be Orlesian! Vari's lip curls a little in disdain. She'd been around enough Orlesian thieves and bards for one lifetime, thank you very much. The little thief knows better than to try and run, though. Even if she could get out of this woman's grasp, she doubts she'd make it out of here without a knife in the back.
Vari shrugs a shoulder, deciding to just appear bored. "Don't really have anywhere else to be, serah. But it'd be a hell of a lot easier to walk if I had my arm back, yeah?"

The sudden hold upon Vari’s wrist would be as cold as ice yet as strong as steel. The gaze upon her even colder, a heavy pale framed by lashes that barely hid the anger and contempt to the woman who was brazen enough to attempt to rob her in the middle of the market.
Let alone the one that had been making ripples among her network. Ripples unappreciated and unwanted.

"Come on, petite perturbatrice,” The last word is all but hissed at the girl. Yes, she would have to be dealt with accordingly. Kirkwall was hers (well, hers and Varric’s, but that was technicalities) and she would not tolerate any little upstarts. At least, not until they knew their place. “Let’s go for a walk.”

"You have no idea," Vari groans in reply. She slowly lifts her head when the drink comes. Putting back half the ale in one gulp, she sighs in relief. A long stretch follows, then she gives her companion some attention.
Her blue eyes sweep over the elf a few times and she smiles. "Nope. Close, but not quite close," Vari smirks. She couldn't just go around telling everyone she was a thief, now could she? "And let me guess... you're a traveling magician? Heard one of the spoiled brats in Hightown was throwing a big birthday bash." She wasn't invited, but that didn't mean she wouldn't be there stealing a bite of cake.

Fitz had asked her to go find the Warden and her friends and observe them. Why, Vari didn't care to ask. She was just excited to be out on the road and away from the Guild for a bit. Denerim was nice and all, but the city walls and Guild rules could be suffocating. It took a bit of searching, but the thief finally found the Warden's camp. She stayed a fair distance away, just watching. The Warden was easy to pick out; Dalish, and one of three women in the camp. She certainly had some... Interesting companions. Vari gave the Mabari a wide berth. She hated dogs with a passion.
That hatred was only fueled when she was washing up by the stream and heard a growl. The girl froze immediately. Judging by the shadows, the mutt wasn't alone. The figure was short as well. Most likely the Warden. "Please don't let your dog eat me," Vari whimpered.

"I said back off," Vari hissed, one hand sliding to a blade. The man had followed her out of The Hanged man. Liked the way she swayed, he said. His ale-breath and other bodily fluids wrinkled the girl's nose. Nothing she did seemed to deter him. He just smiled lewdly, propping an arm on the wall beside her head.
"Feisty one, ain't ya? I like a girl with spirit," the drunkard slurred, reaching out running his greasy fingers over Vari's hair. A flash of a blade, and that hand was bleeding. "Touch me again and you'll lose that hand," Vari growled. Before she could react, the man had his hand on her throat. Vari tried to kick and scratch at him, but that only made him angrier. He pressed on her throat even harder. No matter how she struggled, she couldn't get free. In her panic, Vari noticed someone leave the Hanged Man, a woman in white and blue. Vari prayed to anyone who would listen that she would just turn around.

If there was one thing Vari hated, it was dogs. Mabari were even worse. The blighted things were too smart for their own good. Why the hell had no one mentioned Hawke owned a damned war-hound? That would have saved Vari the humilation of being trapped on top of a wardrobe. The giant dog sat right in front of the wardrobe. The thing growled if Vari so much as twitched. "You're a bull-headed thing, aren't you?" the thief sneered. The dog growled and barked.

"Look, I gave you your coin back and apologized as profusely as pride will allow. Can't we just call this square and forget we even bumped into each other?" Vari was working the charm hard. She figured the mage had a lot of coin on him. She figured he'd be easy to steal from. What she hadn't counted on was the mage having a companion. A companion that could hit hard and fast. That same, dark-haired man currently had her pinned against the wall of an alley. Vari had given up the gold she'd stolen in the hopes of appeasing the brute, but it didn't seem to be working. So, she tried to appeal to the mage.

chain of command, holidays, family
Chain of Command:
Vari... Has never taken orders too well. She knows what she's capable of. No one else can really know her, so no one else has any right to tell her what to do. She wants things done her way, or no way at all. If you want her to do something, it's better to suggest it rather than order it. If you can make Vari think she came up with the idea, even better.
A lot of this changes by Act II when she meets Jorith. He lets her run the Guild, but is always there to point her in the right direction. He's the only person Vari will listen to for advice and counseling. Think of him as her personal Jimminey Cricket.
Holidays:
Vari absolutely loves Wintersend. She loves the smells, sights, and sounds. But mostly it's a great time to pickpocket. There are just so many people about, it's hard to keep her hands to herself. Back in Denerim, there were quite a few stalls that would give out free pastries and goodies, and you can bet Vari visited every one of those stalls.
Family:
Vari doesn't remember much of her family. There are flashes of her parent's faces, but hardly anything more. All she knows for certain is that her mother named her Seryna. She took the name Vari because she felt she was never actually Seryna. Her earliest memory is being raised by the Thieve's Guild in Denerim. From a young age she was taught to watch crowds, gather information, and pickpocket. When she grew older, she was taught knife-work and how to race along the rooftops. Her Guildmates were her family.

Recruting was actually taking a turn for the better. Vari finally had a few fellow thieves within her guild. They'd even found an abandoned warehouse to call home. Dan and Veronica were already working on sprucing the place up for a bit. They didn't have near the numbers that Vari had seen back in Ferelden, but they'd get there eventually. Now all they needed were some resources. Vari thought about asking Varric, but figured the insufferable dwarf would just laugh in her face. No, she needed someone more open... Or at least someone to open Varric up to the idea. One person in particular came to mind.
Vari had never spoken to Isabela before, but she'd seen the pirate in action. Definitely not a woman she wanted to cross. But she seemed more laid back than most of the people Vari had already tried to win over. The thief slid over to the spot beside Isabela, purposely getting between her and that damned poet that was always swooning over her. She tossed some coins to Coriff, "One round for the two of us, if you would." Vari smiled sideways at Isabela, leaning against the bar-top. "So... Word is you're a pirate?"

Maker, she was exhausted. Turns out that lead about sunken treasure in the harbor had been a wild goose-chase. Vari had literally ran from the Vicount's Keep, to the Wounded Coast, and back. This is why she needed a Guild. Other people could do the running for her. Tired feet carried the thief into The Hanged Man. It was the only decent tavern in Kirkwall without all the silly finery. The ale tasted like piss, but at least it was wet. She sat at the bar with a huff and groan, head coming down to rest on the wood. A few coppers slid forward. "Make it something strong, would you?" Vari's muffled voice asked. As tired as she was, Vari hardly noticed she was sitting right next to someone.

Well this was a right mess. What part of, "Head to the right" did these people not understand? Unless they didn't know their left from their right... That would have to be fixed later when one of Vari's men wasn't bleeding all over the ground. It took Vari and Jorith to carry Benny down to Darktown Everyone knew about the healer that didn't charge for services. Quite frankly, Vari was surprised that the Templars hadn't caught onto the guy after all these years. This Anders had some pretty strong assets. Vari just hoped he was just as strong of a healer.
It was only when she knocked on the door that Vari realized he might not be too thrilled to see three hooded figures outside his door. Oh well. Maybe his healer instincts would kick in before he burnt them to a crisp. The thief looked nervously to Jorith then offered Benny a little smile. "Don't you worry, Benny, we'll get you some help soon. Just try and keep your blood inside of you, yeah?"
"I told you..." her fellow thief coughed, "It's Benjamin."
"Yeah. Yeah. Same difference."

Vari knew the elves of the Alienage weren't the richest of folk. There was no point even thinking of stealing from them. They had nothing to lose, and it just felt wrong to steal from someone who didn't have anything. It was probably Vari's only rule: don't steal from those below you. It was a rule she wished others would follow. The young thief shook her head as a pickpocket snagged a purse from a little elf in green. Really? Was he that desperate for coin?
Before the man could get far, Vari grabbed him by the arm. "Hey. Why don't you just give me that purse, ey? I bed you've only got five coppers in there. It's not worth it, mate, trust me. That elfling needs it more than you." The man seemed embarassed by the way he shuffled his feet. Vari accepted the purse with a smile and shoved the man away. Trotting, she caught up to the elf girl and tapped her shoulder.
"'Scuse me? I think you dropped something there." Vari held the coin-purse out.

(Alrighty. Here to do greeters. I'll fish around for a meme or make an open or something. Also, I'll apologize in advance to all the Wardens. I haven't quite thought of how Vari's gonna interact with them yet. So greeters may come a little slow for you. Sorry.)
